to eat cereal?

Having a very important debate with the DCs, they think it is normal to use a teaspoon to eat cereal, I think most people use a dessert spoon. Dd1 says I'm just old and all the young people use the trendy teaspoon.

YABU - You must have a HUGE mouth, of course the dainty teaspoon is the way to go

YANBU - How can you fit ample cereal and milk on a teaspoon, only a dessert spoon will support a satisfying mouthful

Never heard of people eating with a teaspoon unless its for yoghurts or boiled eggs. It must take forever to eat Confused We use dessert spoons for eating cereal, soup, sticky gateau, jelly and ice cream, and cheesecakes etc

I am very intrigued by fruit spoons though. I think I must have had one (smaller and pointer than dessert) but it has mysteriously disappeared. My DD has also left home...

AliceTheeCamel · 10/03/2023 23:20

😯i had literally no idea there are adults who eat cereal with a teaspoon. I thought everyone used a dessert spoon. Every day is a school day on MN!

maddy68 · 10/03/2023 23:23

A normal desert spoon

frolific · 10/03/2023 23:30

Teaspoon, every time.

I'm also fussy on which teaspoons I use. We bought new cutlery a few years back and I don't get on well with the "new" teaspoons.

We've got at least four different types of teaspoon, they're all slightly different shapes and sizes.
I can't eat yogurt from more half of them as they're either too deep, too angled or taste of metal. They have to have the right mouthfeel.

I'm going to have to track down some 'fruit spoons' as they sound perfect.

KimberleyClark · 10/03/2023 23:33

Soup or dessert spoon for cereal Teaspoon for yogurt out of a pot.

I have a spoon I use for cereal and ice cream only, called my Special Spoon. Seriously. As a child, I got attached to it, and I took it with me when I left home. I've used it for 40+ years. It's about half way between a teaspoon and a desert spoon, but it's sort of elongated and pointy. Is that a bit weird of me? I don't care if it is, it's my special spoon.

this sounds like a grapefruit spoon.

itsgood2talk · 10/03/2023 23:41

Yes dessert spoon all the way!

PriamFarrl · 10/03/2023 23:49

See, dessert spoon. All you teaspooners are clearly wrong.

Teaspoon I always have

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 10/03/2023 23:54

Teaspoon for cereal?! What the actual fuck?! Mind you, the other day a MNer said she used a knife and fork for crumpets, which also disturbed me greatly Grin

Loving that so many people have Special Spoons, my DD has one and took it everywhere with her, including her grandparents house. My mum used to make her boiled eggs and put Special Spoon out for her with a tiny ribbon tied around it in a bow.

This thread is like when we discovered half the population sits down to wipe their bums and half stands up, and the two sides had no idea the other side even existed 😆

Yup, that’s what I’m thinking 😂

I just looked at a few cereal adverts from 2020-2023 - only one person using a teaspoon.

5foot5 · 10/03/2023 23:59

OMG this is why mumsnet is such an eye opener.
I had no idea, literally no idea, that anyone ate cereal with a teaspoon. WTAF.

Fizbosshoes · 11/03/2023 00:03

Teen DD uses a tea spoon, DS doesn't eat cereal, me and DH use dessert spoons but my preference is a spoon that is somewhere in between teaspoon and dessert spoon.
DD uses a teaspoon for all food that's eaten with a spoon. DH gets really wound up by it and says its eating disorder behaviour.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 11/03/2023 00:14

For people that use a teaspoon, what if you eat something like Shreddies or mini shredded/frosted wheats? Surely you could only fit about 2 shreddies or 1 mini shred thing on a teaspoon at a time?

I so want to go and test this theory but no one is awake to bring me a bowl and teaspoon!

MajesticWhine · 11/03/2023 04:29

In our house we don't have a special spoon (kind of want one now) but we do have silly spoons. These are plastic colourful measuring spoons. You only use a silly spoon for yoghurt or mousse and only if the cutlery drawer is empty of all teaspoons.

This is correct Grin

UdoU · 11/03/2023 05:16

My Costco teaspoons are huge, I often use those for cereal. My Asda cheap teaspoons are tiny, I prefer them for eating tiny desserts like Pots of Joy etc.

whistlingwinds · 11/03/2023 05:33

The biggest spoon I can find 😂😂😂

Wishawisha · 11/03/2023 06:07

Always a teaspoon. I think I use a teaspoon as my spoon of choice 95% of the time anyway.
Soup spoon for soup but teaspoon for everything else. The desert spoons go pretty much untouched in a drawer!

DoAWheelie · 11/03/2023 06:41

I'm a greedy fat fucker who overeats a lot. But I use a tea spoon for anything spoon-able and a tiny salad fork for my main meals. It's nothing to do with being dainty.

I just really like food and make each mouthful a small as I can without compromising the taste of what I'm eating. That means I get to keep tasting the meal for as long as possible and get maximum enjoyment from it. I've always been a slow eater though - it's not unusual for a meal to take me upwards 40 mins to finish.

cerealsy · 11/03/2023 06:44

No way! I'd be there all day with a teaspoon.

My 8 year old sometimes eats his cereal with the ice cream scoop...

That's hilarious 🤣🤣🤣

My teen ate cereal from a frisbee rather than wash a bowl

SirVixofVixHall · 10/03/2023 23:33

this sounds like a grapefruit spoon.

That's just what I thought it sounded like.

Also, doesn't anybody use a spoon and fork for pudding/dessert/sweet - whatever you call it - anymore?
I like to watch "Come Dine with Me" and people are always chasing bits of food around with a spoon, usually ending up poking it on to the spoon with their finger.
