What size spoon do you use

to eat cereal?

Having a very important debate with the DCs, they think it is normal to use a teaspoon to eat cereal, I think most people use a dessert spoon. Dd1 says I'm just old and all the young people use the trendy teaspoon.

YABU - You must have a HUGE mouth, of course the dainty teaspoon is the way to go

YANBU - How can you fit ample cereal and milk on a teaspoon, only a dessert spoon will support a satisfying mouthful

ShinyMe I think I have a matching spoon. A teaspoon is too small, a desert spoon is too big so an in between one is perfect.

DS, who is a fully functioning adult with a good career etc has to use the little spoon with the rabbit on the handle when he's here 😂 I once gave him a grown up spoon as his new partner was here but apparently that was wrong.

We have two IKEA kids' cutlery sets here. No small children for at least a decade. The spoons in these are perfectly sized - half-way between a teaspoon and a dessert spoon. They are the Crown Spoons. No IKEA in the country either. DD doesn't use them - only me (aged 50-lots).

While on odd breakfast habits, DFather puts porridge in a bowl, gets a small jug of milk, then uses a dessert spoon to scoop up some porridge, then dips it in the jug before eating it. And insists this is how he's always done it he hasn't ...

See, dessert spoon. All you teaspooners are clearly wrong.

That's not a normal serving size if the bowl is the diameter of a dessert spoon and full to the brim. If you were eating that much then it makes sense.

Mercedes45 · 11/03/2023 07:49

Never in my life seen anyone eat cereal with a teaspoon. Are they eating one cheerio at a time.

Fizbosshoes · 11/03/2023 07:58

We have a standard set of cutlery but over the years have acquired/bought a few extras. We all prefer the standard set but each of us have an aversion to one or more types of the imposter cutlery. (I bought some value knives from tesco ones and I really dislike them for eating a meal but would use for buttering toast etc and DD particularly hates a knife with has a squarish handle) Almost every Sunday dinner, whichever DC lays the table places an unliked imposter knife or fork in DHs place so that he will frown and complain and walk over to the drawer to swap it! It's become a routine!😂

PriamFarrl · 11/03/2023 09:05

What do all you teaspoon people do in restaurants when you get a regular spoon with your food?

IHeartGeneHunt · 11/03/2023 09:10

I've read some madness on here before but teaspoons for cereal has finished me.

Dessert spoon (only teens would have the time it takes to eat cereal with a teaspoon)

Nailed it!

TheGoogleMum · 11/03/2023 09:31

Dessert spoon, but now you mention it I think i used a teaspoon until my DH (then BF) complained about me giving him a teaspoon for breakfast

BluetheBear · 11/03/2023 09:32

I eat most things with a dessert spoon but either way has to be my preferred spoon style. I'll go hunting or wash my favourite spoon when I need one. There are some in our house I just don't use.

Same! I'm also baffled about what happens when these people go out to eat and are given a proper sized spoon. Do they request a teaspoon? I'm so confused as to how anyone would think this is normal? Even children's cutlery spoons are bigger than a teaspoon.

FilthyforFirth · 11/03/2023 09:41

I use a teaspoon for everything. Including soup. A tablespoon just feels massive and wrong!

FilthyforFirth · 11/03/2023 09:42

To answer the above poster, yes I do ask for a teaspoon when out!

I don't go out and order cereal, soup I'd use a soup spoon, dessert I'd use the spoon from my coffee as I prefer that to a cake fork.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 11/03/2023 09:49

Teaspoon, my mouth isn't big enough for a bigger one. 😂

Paesano · 11/03/2023 09:49

My daughter uses chopsticks to eat cereal to avoid excess milk.

generalexpert · 11/03/2023 09:56

Get a grip. Desert spoon!

SoShallINever · 11/03/2023 09:57

Antique silver teaspoon which is actually a little bigger and deeper than the modern ones.
It's my special spoon.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/03/2023 10:01

Desert spoon.

I stay in a lot of hotels and only see desert spoon action when it comes to cereal. Tell your kids they are weirdos.

milkysmum · 11/03/2023 10:04

Definitely a teaspoon

R0ckets · 11/03/2023 10:06

Well most people don't go out to eat cereal but equally if you use a soup spoon for soup then why would you use something smaller for when you ate cereal which logically would need a bigger spoon as you can fit more soup on a teaspoon?

The logic behind it is so confusing, surley those using a teaspoon have noticed that others don't use a teaspoon. Also what do people use normal sized spoons for if not for cereal?

PerrinAybara · 11/03/2023 10:15

I use a dessert spoon. 10 year old uses a soup spoon. 12 year old uses a teaspoon. Which completely flies against the ND theory a pp mentioned.

And, having read the word 'spoon' so much on this thread, it now looks wrong.

PriamFarrl · 11/03/2023 10:21

I’ve now stood in the kitchen and done this. Crunchy nut cornflake for scale.

What size spoon do you use
Fizbosshoes · 11/03/2023 10:29

Having read how many MN won't eat cakes/food that other people have made because they don't know the state of their kitchen, I'd think it was very probable that some people might take their own cutlery to a restaurant (including a teaspoon!)

TroysMammy · 11/03/2023 10:37

WolfFoxHare · 10/03/2023 18:38

Big spoon for soup or cereal, small spoon for dessert. Makes it last longer.

We have some ASDA teaspoons that are bigger than most teaspoons and they’re my favourites for dessert. They have a friendlier handle too.

Soup spoon for soup, dessert spoon for cereal but I'm with you for teaspoon for dessert. Also 😂 at a friendlier handle.

Soup is liquid so you can only eat level spoonfuls and you don't put the whole spoon in your mouth. Cereal you can eat a heaped teaspoon full. Teaspoon fits in my mouth. Why does it matter what other people do? I do what feels comfortable for me.
