What size spoon do you use

to eat cereal?

Having a very important debate with the DCs, they think it is normal to use a teaspoon to eat cereal, I think most people use a dessert spoon. Dd1 says I'm just old and all the young people use the trendy teaspoon.

YABU - You must have a HUGE mouth, of course the dainty teaspoon is the way to go

YANBU - How can you fit ample cereal and milk on a teaspoon, only a dessert spoon will support a satisfying mouthful

A teaspoon for stirring tea
A coffee spoon for stirring coffee
A dessert spoon (and maybe a fork) for most desserts
A fruit spoon for eating most fruits, but
A berry spoon for eating berries
A grapefruit spoon for eating grapefruit
A soup spoon for soup
A serving spoon/tablespoon for serving food onto plates
An egg spoon for eating boiled eggs
A Stilton spoon for serving Stilton
A bone marrow spoon for eating bone marrow

I do not eat cereal but if I did I would want a dedicated cereal spoon.

I love vintage/antique cutlery Blush

Dessert spoon. Tea spoon is for tea/coffee or yoghurt/GU size dessert/boiled egg only. I've never seen anyone use a dessert spoon for cereal and have 20s DC and work in an office full of 20 somethings who eat multiple bowls of cereal at their desks. There's never any dessert spoons in the cutlery drawer at work because they've all got them.

Must admit that I've not heard of a berry spoon.
Do you use your bone marrow spoon when you sup with the devil or do you have a special, extra-long "supping with Satan" spoon? Wink

I love vintage cutlery too.
There’s many types of serving and stirring spoons. Gravy and sauce ones are lovely shapes.

Another for your list of eating spoons might be an ice cream spoon. 2 types one for sundaes one more old fashioned and a bit like a berry spoon.

Entering the soup spoon debate, cream and bullion soups are served with a round bowled spoon so you can easily sip from the side, and “chunky” soups are served with a larger, oval spoon (specifically a dinner spoon/oval soup spoon/table spoon, depending on where you are) so the whole spoon can fit easily into your mouth, as chunks can’t be sipped.

Working off that principle, as there are no spoons made specifically for cereal, for the purposes of this discussion we must treat it as a soup. Therefore, it would be classified as a “chunky” soup and a dinner spoon would be used. Technically, a dinner spoon is larger than both a teaspoon and a dessert spoon. So option C, both of you are wrong?

I just made this worse, didn’t I?

angelikacpickles · 13/03/2023 21:06

I don't really eat cereal, but if I did, I'd use a dessert spoon. DH and the kids use teaspoons.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/03/2023 21:08

Soup spoon I think for me

NotMeNoNo · 13/03/2023 21:19

By amazing luck we chose the IKEA Dragon cutlery set, which despite having no soup spoons, does come with small knives/forks/spoons. The in between spoons are perfect for cereal, desserts and practically anything. Also there are long handle teaspoons for ice cream and small desserts.

I also eat soup with a teaspoon Grin

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 14/03/2023 12:34

I have a set of spoons that belonged to my DGM which are larger than a teaspoon but smaller than a dessert spoon - though they are some kind of dessert spoon - and much prefer them over any other spoon for eating any dessert, cereal, yogurt etc.

Is a desert spoon the same as a table spoon? 🤔

A tablespoon is a large spoon for serving food. In baking, 15ml
A dessert spoon is a spoon for eating. In baking, 10ml
A teaspoon is 5ml

BlueMoonCity · 14/03/2023 12:51

I don't eat cereal but DM uses a desert spoon :)

Fantasticaldolphin · 14/03/2023 13:13

In case it’s keeping anyone up at night wondering… I ate Shreddies this morning with a teaspoon. On average I fit 5 on a teaspoon. A few times I managed 7, with no special effort.

If I went to someone’s house or a restaurant, I wouldn’t ask for a teaspoon.

LaMarschallin · 14/03/2023 14:43

Five Shreddies on a teaspoon is good going, imo. Respect.

CremeEggThief · 14/03/2023 14:46

When I'm very stressed, I struggle to eat and sometimes I have to force myself, so on occasion I have used a teaspoon to eat my cereal.

But over 99% of the time I use a dessert spoon.

Small knives and forks used as a pair are intended for use with starters. Small knives are also used as side plate knives for your bread roll etc or the cheese course/lunch. Small forks are paired with a dessert spoon for desserts like puddings and pies. Small forks with a slightly more decorative curve are fish forks.

More often than not smaller knives and forks are optimally useful when youngsters need smaller utensils.

Yes we use them for all those things but it's interesting they are distinctly middle sized rather than in usual cutlery service where the starter cutlery is only slightly smaller.

They sound really useful 😀
