What size spoon do you use

to eat cereal?

Having a very important debate with the DCs, they think it is normal to use a teaspoon to eat cereal, I think most people use a dessert spoon. Dd1 says I'm just old and all the young people use the trendy teaspoon.

YABU - You must have a HUGE mouth, of course the dainty teaspoon is the way to go

YANBU - How can you fit ample cereal and milk on a teaspoon, only a dessert spoon will support a satisfying mouthful

Surely hotels give dessert spoons for cereal, so that must be the standard?

I've never considered using a teaspoon for cereal, and I've never seen my three Gen Zs use one either.

Dessertspoon

I’m curious about the variation in mouth sizes. Some people saying that a tablespoon or dessert spoon is too big but others saying they eat with a soup spoon. Soup spoons are big and round.

You don't put an entire soup spoon in your mouth!

People are out here eating cereal with teaspoons, they’ll do anything.

Why does it matter if others use teaspoons? My point was that it's not comparable to using a soup spoon as you eat from the side of the spoon, not put it in your mouth. I use a teaspoon as it's the right size mouthful for me, I don't see why anyone else cares.

In a segue can I mention that in Germany and France I’ve seen people eat cake with a teaspoon rather than a fork or spoon or fork and spoon. Not here though.

I love cutlery and have various vintage items. Cake forks come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and I think once you use one you won’t ever want a spoon unless there is single cream in the equation.

Regarding spoons and cereal, there’s only one main cereal eater out of the three of us here. If he had a teaspoon he’d never manage all that milk he has. I prefer a mix of yogurt, fruit and the odd branflake and use a vintage 70s spoon that is smaller than our set of dessert spoons but a bit on the big side to be described as a fruit spoon. I don’t use it with cereal and milk

Found this thread yesterday and thought I would try my morning porridge today with a teaspoon and not my normal desert spoon. Took longer to eat, felt more satisfied and fuller with exactly same breakfast as I had yesterday so going to keep it up and see if it helps x

Not when you eat soup with it, no. But this is making me wonder how people are eating cereal with a soup spoon. Surely they aren’t slurping the cereal like soup.

I have a spoon I use for cereal and ice cream only, called my Special Spoon. Seriously. As a child, I got attached to it, and I took it with me when I left home. I've used it for 40+ years. It's about half way between a teaspoon and a desert spoon, but it's sort of elongated and pointy. Is that a bit weird of me? I don't care if it is, it's my special spoon.

We inherited from my parents some fruit spoons, a cross between a teaspoon and a dessert spoon with a bowl shaped like a soup spoon. When the grandchildren were small they were great for when they were eating cereal.

What about a salt spoon? Or just kicking things?

I've actually got a salt spoon but they have an odd kink in the shaft!! Grapefruit spoons are marvellous for pots of dessert, they're pointed and so can get into the corners for the last bit, saves having to run a finger round the inside.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 11/03/2023 15:14

I use a paddle skewer to stir my coffee, less chance of teaspoons disappearing.

strawberry2017 · 11/03/2023 20:35

Teaspoon for me.

Anyotherdude · 12/03/2023 01:05

Dessert spoon, as cereal is served in a cereal/dessert bowl - teaspoons are primarily for tea or coffee stirring and eating from teeny-tiny receptacles like yogurt or Gü pots. Small forks are for cake/patisserie Etc.
Soup spoons are traditionally NOT for desserts (because actual silverware can get tainted by onion from soup) - even though we use stainless steel cutlery, I can’t countenance using a soup spoon for dessert since childhood!

Pixiedust1234 · 12/03/2023 13:15

Based on this thread I went down a spoon shaped rabbit hole which started with fruit spoons. I've ended up buying three different sorts of reusable plastic spoons as my adult DD hates eating yoghurt or ice cream with metal spoons and everywhere is changing plastic to bamboo. Its been an expensive thread. Unfortunately I've now read grapefruit spoons are good for yoghurt pots...argh!!!!!

HarrietSchulenberg · 12/03/2023 13:31

In 52 years on this earth I have never met anyone who eats cereal with a teaspoon. Not even my children, who are all bloody strange in their own special ways.
Dessert spoon, all the way.

What do all you teaspoon people do in restaurants when you get a regular spoon with your food?

I'm perfectly happy to eat with a normal spoon if that's what I'm given. But if I'm at home and have a choice, I like my own spoon.

mastertomsmum · 13/03/2023 00:02

If anyone fancies another odd thread about eating habits there’s one on the go where someone claims they want an entirely pre plated meal plonked in front of them at a wedding instead of veg sep to share. I wouldn’t want this at home nevermind in a formal wedding celebration

z0fl0ra · 13/03/2023 00:49

Always a teaspoon for anything I eat with a spoon although my favourite are the plastic kids ones you get from ikea that are the same size as a teaspoon as plastic feels so much nicer in my mouth than metal Grin

I’m hate reading this right now but can’t cope with how many times people are saying “veg”.

MrsAvocet · 13/03/2023 01:11

Dessert spoon for me, except porridge which must be eaten with a teaspoon.
Actually I have a specific spoon I use for porridge, which is a bit bigger than average teaspoon. I did have a set of them once, but now only one remains and I've been known to get a bit narky if anyone uses it for anything other than its true purpose.

WeWereInParis · 13/03/2023 02:30

Why would anyone eat cereal with a teaspoon? Doesn't it take ages??I had no idea this was a thing.
Teaspoons are for tea, and boiled eggs.

ChewtonRoad · 13/03/2023 07:31

Another teaspoon fan, especially with porridge.

I think Weetabix are great but they're vile when soggy...I may have been known to dip a biscuit in a small bowl of milk, bite off the damp bit, then dip again. The teaspoon comes into its own to chase up the last bits of Weetabix in the milk bowl.

A big massive wallop of spoonage for me thanks.
