AIBU?

To kick her chair during the inflight meal

CanStopWillStop · 07/03/2023 00:45

in short, red eye flight from America. The woman in front reclines her chair as soon as humanly possibly. No issue with that.

the inflight meal comes about 45mins in. She is the ONLY person in the cabin who keeps her seat reclined, bearing in mind she is sat bolt upright to eat.

I don’t believe it’s within my rights to ask her to (do the decent thing and) put her chair up so I can eat in comfort without her chair pressing against my forehead. Instead I did the petty thing and kicked her chair throughout I’m the inflight meal, so she had a taste of the discomfort that I have.

AIBU? 😂

Maybe. But she’d have been the one arrested when we landed.

I expect you both would have been. As you started it. And crumbling crackers into someone's hair would be regarded as technical assault. The fun you think you would have doing that is not without consequence.

Indoorcatmum · 07/03/2023 13:02

You are very bizarre.

Not so much the situation, but how wildly amusing you think you are.

It's quite funny

Sassyfox · 07/03/2023 11:22

Maybe she would have turned round and punched you in the face. 🤷‍♀️

That would be funny!

I’m sure they’ll be crying and playing the victim though.

Some people are sly bullies and would never actually confront anyone or stand up for themselves but do things slyly to try and intimidate others, just to make their miserable lives a bit better.
Its very pathetic.

Surely it’s not just me who sees that the OP is clearly dicking about with this thread for a bit of fun? Surely that’s obvious with her replies and her tone?

Why is everyone so straight, and yet so aggressive?

In the olden days, this would have elicited shared stories about other twats encountered on flights and fun ways to seek revenge. Like the woman who hung her long hair down over the back of the seat and my screen during a flight to New York. Lighters had to be stored in cabin baggage and I wanted to set her hair on fire with the one in my backpack. I didn’t. I took photos, posted it on social media, laughed at the comments and then told her to remove her hair from my screen.

But instead, this thread it’s a load of worked up school prefects being bores and telling the OP to ‘use her words’ like she’s a toddler, over and over again. Christ almighty.

😂 fuck saaaaaaaaake.

notimagain · 07/03/2023 13:09

No one should be reclining as soon as a flight takes off. It’s typically not allowed until you reach altitude.

??

May depend on the airline but the typical rule AFAIK, and certainly the one where I worked was that the seat had to be upright for take-off and landing...that was it.

I know some airlines request seats up for meals but TBH on a genuine "red eye" where for some passengers trying to sleep is paramount you're not going to get 100% compliance with requests like that...many go eyeshades on, ear plugs in and seat back once the gear is up.

AliceOlive · 07/03/2023 13:15

Right, and take off ends once the captain turns the light off and says it’s safe?

But people like this do it as soon as the flight attendants sit down, knowing that no one will see them.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 07/03/2023 13:15

Ahaha OP, I would like to be your friend. I like your sense of humour.

BadNomad · 07/03/2023 13:17

Maybe some people don't find things funny when they are at the expense of others. Some people laugh when old people fall. Some people laugh when children get smacked in the face by flying objects. Some people laugh at people with abnormal gaits. Some people laugh at people stuttering. Some people laugh when someone intentionally inflicts discomfort on someone else on a long flight.

I prefer cats. I find cats funny.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 07/03/2023 13:20

I had the opposite once. I wasn’t reclined but that didn’t stop the guy behind me kicking my chair repeatedly during dinner service. So I started moving my chair up and down slowly and his wife told me to stop because “his dinner’s going up and down”

I guess some people just don’t like bullies.

I find it amusing that as soon as OP doesn’t get the desired response she starts playing the victim.

Maybe. But she’d have been the one arrested when we landed.

I think you’ll find that they would say they acted in self defence and you would be charged with assault.

so don’t try this at home kids.

You just laughed at the idea of someone punching the OP in the face. Who is the bully?

Also, repeatedly talking about how much better you do things is smug and annoying.

What’s going on with you that you’ve become hyper focused on a silly interaction between two adults you don’t know, being recounted here?

AliceOlive · 07/03/2023 13:29

@Doesthepopeshitinthewoods I know.

Also, someone needs to give the next person that uses the phrase “read the room” or the word “hun” a few kicks in the airplane seat.

In truth we’re all a bit focused on it aren’t we? You too believe it or not. This is how sm gets us. We all end up having stupid arguments with each other and wanting to have the last word - which I have now had. So please do not @ me.

AliceOlive · 07/03/2023 13:31

I didn’t @ you. Weird.

notimagain · 07/03/2023 13:33

Not really...FWIW if by the light you mean the seatbelt signs that generally goes off at about 10,000 feet in the climb unless turbulence is expected..the formal take-off phase of flight is usually considered to have ended well before that.

whynotwhatknot · 07/03/2023 13:35

i saw this happen last month on a ba flight-couple of rows ahead food comes this woman puts her seat back very quickly wine spilt over the erson behind-she just gets a sorry i wanted to go to sleep

erm with the food coming round use your head

Sassyfox · 07/03/2023 13:35

@AliceOlive

I actually laughed at the idea of someone being punched in the face for kicking someone’s chair and crushing crackers in their hair - that’s not being a bully that’s called sticking up for yourself when someone is trying to bully/intimidate you.

I’m not surprised you don’t know the difference tbh.

British Airways … PREMIUM ECONOMY! Because “bonkers people” apparently also have disposable income to piss up the wall.

food tray comes form the arm rest, seats recline more than standard economy seats. I exaggerate with seat touching my face although because I chose not to recline my seat during the meal because it’s RUDE, it meant her seat was inches away from my face and meal.

i have a genuine question here though… a lot of you are saying that the onus is on ME to stop her from being a jerk. I’ve begrudgingly explained why I actively avoid confrontations with strangers. Are you concerned that seat recliner sally was uncomfortable because I kicked her chair, because with that same logic she could have asked me to stop if it were a big deal. 🤔 discuss…

I'll go against the thred, in standard economy you are correct, when someone has their seat back its hard to eat comfortably. Also why does everyone expect perfect behaviour from you but doesn't see how rude the chair thing is? Is that cause they all do it? Totally understand why you didn't speak up, though you probably didn't handle it the best way these things are 2 way streets. I am the most respectful and reasonable person you can meet until someone is rude or unreasonable with me then I'm a totally asshole!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 they set the bar, I just meet them there ☺️
