AIBU?

To kick her chair during the inflight meal

in short, red eye flight from America. The woman in front reclines her chair as soon as humanly possibly. No issue with that.

the inflight meal comes about 45mins in. She is the ONLY person in the cabin who keeps her seat reclined, bearing in mind she is sat bolt upright to eat.

I don’t believe it’s within my rights to ask her to (do the decent thing and) put her chair up so I can eat in comfort without her chair pressing against my forehead. Instead I did the petty thing and kicked her chair throughout I’m the inflight meal, so she had a taste of the discomfort that I have.

AIBU? 😂

OP posts:

Am I being unreasonable?

To be fair both were unreasonable. The woman reclining her seat far enough to make someone uncomfortable but the poster also for booting her seat rather than somehow asking her to move her seat to a level which wasnt disrupting the meal. Seems this poster is quite proud of the childish act of booting someones seat though and maybe needs to also learn some manners. Seems the post is a troll post though

Look, I’ll be honest – I’m tired, jet lagged and absolutely petty. Yesss I could had tapped Wreck-it Recliner on the shoulder and asked her to put it up.

But you know what. I didn’t want to. Why should I further my discomfort by forcing myself to communicate with her verbally… so I kicked her chair a few times to teach her a VIOLENT lesson in plane etiquette. (lol seriously please do call crimestoppers for my random act of violence - guilty as charged)

I shall await the thread about angry stuttering lady who kicks chairs imminently.

I'm in the minority but I agree with OP. I'd be kicking the seat, leaning on the back of it to stand up, banging my tray table back up. Fire with fire 🤣

PupInAPram · 07/03/2023 17:06

I don't even have a speech impediment.

Why wouldn't you just ask first, fair enough being annoyed/frustrated if she refuses to move it but seems really odd to jump to such aggressive behaviour.

RatSlave · 07/03/2023 17:24

I'd probably have done the same. I'm a petty ass bitch too. OP is hilarious bringing out all the armchair psychologists and perfect people.

I am in the minority with you!

Every arsehole who puts their seat right back, knows they have done it. I would be making their life as uncomfortable as they made mine.

WisherWood · 07/03/2023 17:50

Is saying 'excuse me, can you put your seat back up?' rather than repeatedly kicking it perfect behaviour now? If that's the case, I must be angel fucking Gabriel.

No, not perfect just normal. However if she'd done that, and the woman had complied, then OP wouldn't have been able to start this absolutely hilarious thread 🙄

Arrocahar23 · 07/03/2023 18:12

The woman shouldn’t have done it in the first place. I would have asked one of the cabin crew to speak to her. You shouldn’t have to do it yourself.

I’m surprised they didn’t notice it themselves since they’re usually so officious about seatbelts.

Shitfather · 07/03/2023 18:13

Kicking is the wrong response. You had other ways of resolving this. It could have escalated - then what?

@RatSlave

I assume you are an adult, so why are you so afraid of asking another adult to do something?

I understand being a bit shy but you can’t go through life being walked all over and then acting petty to get your revenge (especially when the person has no idea you’ve done anything to get revenge).

The cabin crew have to be "officious" with regards to seatbelts since that is both a legal and a safety issue. If wearing isn't enforced when required and word gets back to the regulator the brown stuff can hit the fan.

OTOH the seat being reclined in cruise is more of a grey area, nowt in law, regulator won't care....

It would be interesting to hear from any cabin crew in this place on their views on this whole incident.

getalifesonny · 07/03/2023 21:43

Cabin crew don't do anything when it comes to reclined seat. They just shrug their shoulders and say 'we can't say anything to them because they are allowed to recline their seats" Well no seats should be allowed to recline if they end up touching the face of the person behind them. Been there done that.

NomiMacaroni · 07/03/2023 23:47

You're.... not as funny as you think you are

What airline and aircraft was that?

BreviloquentBastard · 08/03/2023 00:01

This thread is wild, you've got people who think kicking chairs, slamming tray tables and crumbling crackers in people's hair on a flight is totally reasonable behaviour, and people who think all of the above make you a violent serial killer in the making.

Surely this is just a case of two twats on a plane being twatty to eachother for no reason?

you didn't think you were within your rights to politely ask her to put her seat up during the meal, but felt it ok to kick her seat? Yeah, you're awful.

Not true. During meal times it's expected chairs aren't reclined. If the passenger in front of me is still reclining when the meal is being served I ask the flight attendant to have a word with the passenger. It's never been an issue.

Thats not true. The airline I mainly use, the cabin crew make sure seats are not reclined for takeoff and landing until announcement is made people can unbuckle/adjust seats, they don’t just shrug. Similarly when mealtimes come around, an announcement is made and a request for everyone to put their seats up for duration of the meal. If people don’t they will be asked. I’ve seen the CF’s who pretend they don’t hear and they are dealt with without other passengers having to ask as crew don’t expect people to eat/drink with trays rammed into their chests, especially as they are doing the rounds with the hot beverages. Dealing with a disgruntled reclining CF during meal service is better than the paperwork caused when another passenger suffers burns when their boiling hot coffee is thrust all over them off the tray table. Also why they don’t serve during turbulence etc.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 08/03/2023 05:08

I have flown on lots of different airlines. It is standard on all of them to ask passengers to put their seats upright during meal service. Usually, they do this proactively, but where they haven't noticed that a seat is reclined, I have never seen them not respond when someone points it out.

notimagain · 08/03/2023 07:27

There's no universal actual law on this, and that sort of passenger response^^ is one of the problems....

So it's mainly back to etiquette and hoping people will be reasonable...FWIW an American POV:

😂😂😂 Two twats on a plane. Sums the entire episode up perfectly.

tunamayo81 · 08/03/2023 13:47

you are definitely unreasonable! she probably forgot ,this happened to me once, i’m an anxious flyer and didn’t even think about the fact it was still reclined at meal time as i was preoccupied, they asked me to put it up and i apologised and did so straight away. You are a child!

Doesthepopeshitinthewoods · 08/03/2023 13:53

I imagine she’s off the plane and home now. Unless she was on the International Space Station, but I don’t think that’s BA…

getalifesonny · 08/03/2023 19:40

PIA is like that. Their service is rubbish and the only reason we use it is because they are the only one who have a direct flight to Pakistan.
