What the bloody hell just happened?

scorpiogirly · 03/03/2023 00:02

I'm trying not to freak out.

In bed reading mumsnet as you do and all of a sudden I hear this almighty bang on my bedroom door which is ajar. It's one of those crap ones with a frame and perspex in.

Thinking something must have fallen, I got up to investigate. I turn the torch on on my phone as the bedside table lamp barely gives off any light. When I reached the door my phone went weird, the torch went off and a qr code came up on my screen as if trying to scan. I tried getting it off and it closed to reveal the screensaver I have of my daughter. All the icons had vanished and the phone was frozen except for the screenshot which was blurred and looked almost ghostly.

I put the light on and check around. Nothing apart from a coat hanger on the floor which could have already been there as it was behind the door.

Couldn't do anything with my phone until all of a sudden it restarted and now appears to be working fine!

A couple of years ago myself and my now ex partner were out trying to find a garden centre several miles from where we lived.
I had lost my wife in a motorcycle accident about twenty years before. The woman I was with was my first relationship were we had bought a house together (there had been previous unsuccessful ones).
During the drive we started to discuss the emotional differences between getting divorced and grief after a sudden accident. It is important to stress at this point that my partner had her mobile phone on her knee following directions on the sat nav. So things began to get a bit strained during the course of the conversation. Meanwhile the monotone instructions from the sat nav continued. We then came to a T junction where we had to turn. Just after the instructions were given the tone of the sat nav voice completely changed and said, "to be honest I wouldn't be bothered one way or the other." Initially thinking my partner had touched her phone I kept driving. I then looked over to my partner who was ashen white. She said, "did you hear that?", to which I replied, "yes, what did you do?". "I never touched it", she said. I stopped the car and tried to calm her down, then the normal sat nav returned giving directions.
My ex partner was convinced it was my dead wife trying to communicate with me. I am sceptical when it comes to things like this. However I have no explanation as to what could have caused such a unexplainable phenomenon.

EricBlyton1 · 05/03/2023 10:53

Have you seen the movie, "The Entity" the original version? if not you really should.

Cece70 · 05/03/2023 10:54

You should read The Hand on the Mirror by Janis Heaphy Durham. After her partner died, she experienced all sorts of paranormal phenomena. She interviewed loads of scientists for possible explanations. It’s fascinating!

I was woken in the middle of the night by a voice in my kitchen, I live alone so it scared me. I lay in bed in the darkness listening, not that I could hear much above the pounding of my heart, and trying to remember if I'd locked the door. I did notice that my dogs who sleep in my bedroom hadn't stirred. Then the voice came again . . .

Low battery . . .

I hadn't switched off the remote speaker!

Haven't made that mistake again!

BlackeyedSusan · 05/03/2023 11:56

perspex expanding or contracting with change of temperature.

GobsyWallop · 05/03/2023 12:35

You are being enormously haunted. The main thing is to sell your story to the highest bidder for movie rights. I can go as high as £2.50.

Could your satnav have accidentally picked up a bit of radio broadcast or something?

Lachlan08 · 05/03/2023 13:25

To be honest that was my first response. However, the statement did seem to chime with the conversation we were having. I also thought that maybe the location was a factor. But we were in the wilds of Northumberland at the time.

😂 phew, I'll bet your wee heart was pounding though!

Reminds me of the time, many years ago, when DH and I lived in a really old property with no neighbours within screaming distance. He worked shifts, so I was often alone and as I have a rather overactive imagination I was always on the alert for anything spooky.

Anyway, one day I came in from work, it was winter so the house was in darkness. I came in to the hall and heard a voice behind the closed door to the living room. I thought "shit, someone must have broken in" but I didn't know what to do because it was in the time before mobile phones and the only phone was in the living room. I was standing there frozen with fear, when I heard BEEEEEEEEP and I realised that the disembodied voice was one of DH's pals leaving a message on the answering machine 😂😂

Horsedoglover59 · 05/03/2023 15:22

My sat navigation is on my phone, and I don't always remember to touch "Finish" when I've arrived at my destination. I used to work by myself a lot, I used to be a home and animal sitter so often was going into peoples' homes late in the day, and I cannot tell you how many times I've jumped out of my skin by a voice telling me my destination is on the right!! Mind you, I've stayed in one or two quite creepy properties too! I've never seen anything, but the bedroom in one house spooked me enough to spend the rest of the week sleeping on the sofa downstairs with the dog and cats!

Whatever you do ,please do not mess around with ouija boards, you don’t know what’s out there. My late father instilled this in us growing up,he was a consultant psychiatrist and had to treat folk who had gotten themselves into a terrible state after holding seances.
There was a case in Yorkshire where some folk had been holding a seance and they had experienced disturbances afterwards. They went to the police who basically thought they were a bunch of hysterics and despite laughing at them , they agreed to stop over in the house to see what was happening. Well those burly Yorkshire bobbies were not laughing in the morning ,nor when they were referred to my father in the wake of their experience that night.

Following my earlier post, in my previous rental home, my girl was around 7 yo and out with her Dad, we had split, when a red ball was thrown across the dining/ front room area, I was the only one home. When I was young, my Mum was in the bath, I was trying on her shoes in her room and as I was buckling up the ankle of her high heels, I felt the pressure of 2 fingers on my right shoulder, I looked up and nothing was there, that happened twice! When I was a teen I spent time looking after other siblings and whilst I was there, fell asleep on the sofa, woke up to the tiffany light swinging, freaked out, went to check on sibs, walked past kitchen and kettle was boiling and staff dog cowering in the corner! Also stayed at an exes house a few years later and had a picture swaying above me, went to say to then BF who was taking a shower and saw an apparition of a young girl in the hallway. Always had weird shit going on

I have had the feeling of being touched. Sometimes it's a finger or a hand. Even in a friend's house while talking to her. A few times I have to rub the area afterwards.

I Also feel people walking past the end of the bed if my feet are sticking out in the morning. In fact if my foot is overhanging the bed it's almost 100% I will feel something brush my feet and walk up the side of the bed. That is possibly a sleep thing. The being touched is weirder

Could be an earthquake?! I only say this because I was woken up years ago by a huge crash and weird shake (no one else inthe house heard it!) Next morning, someone at the school gate mentioned it and said it was a quake and had checked a website which records these things! Since happened a couple more times. Doesn't explain your weird phone thing tho....

Had this happen to me too. Woke up at about 4 in the morning and the whole room was shaking. Turned out to be an earthquake. When discussing it with my 2 colleagues later on that day, I was surprised that they had both slept through it!

Lachlan08 · 05/03/2023 18:35

Sorry if my post has provoked some scary memories/thoughts. Returning to my mobile story. The voice was definitely not the usual sat nav voice. The look on my exes face was truly scary. The colour had gone from her face and she was adamant that she had not touched the phone.
I am sure some more insightful people may have different ideas about what happened. Forever the sceptic I attempted a rational explanation, but my ex was firm in her belief that it was the spirit of my dead wife.

Ellyess · 05/03/2023 20:41

I'd be jumpy too. But I really do think there's probably a simple explanation. I just can't help being someone who has to check out all the possibilities........

Cece70 · 06/03/2023 07:26

Tik Tok door kick challenge?! Just been reading about it in the papers. Young people film themselves taking a flying kick at a front door and it causes a massive thud like you describe. It’s such a problem in some places that police are issuing warnings to residents.

christo22 · 06/03/2023 11:07

Was it that sonic boom? Could that explain the bang and the phone glitch?

scorpiogirly · 06/03/2023 18:14

Snippit · 04/03/2023 18:51

My husband used to poo poo the strange going’s on in our house. Until one night it honestly sounded as though the wardrobe had fallen over in our bedroom, that shit him up, there was no smarty pants explanation from him trying to scientifically poo poo it.

ornament’s have flown off surfaces or moved. I’d had enough, one day it sounded as if something was being slammed on our dining table, all 3 dogs were bewildered. I was fuming, I stormed up to the table and gave whatever it was a bollocking, since then it’s behaved itself.

That's bloody terrifying!

scorpiogirly · 06/03/2023 18:33

I live I south wales so not sure it could have been the sonic boom. I'm not hugely scared. Haven't heard anything since. Last night I went to bed really early and my daughter was still awake. She said she had heard noises again, knocking. By this point I was so pissed off because I have 3 separate leaks in my house and with the stress of trying to find a plumber to sort them I lost it and said whoever is knocking, bloody leave us alone as we're not interested lol.

Some very spooky stories here.

I've done ouija boards multiple times in the past. Once when I was a teen something happened and I swore I would never do one again. Then in my 20s did a few until the last time which left me convinced they're not a load of crap. Never done it in this house though thankfully.

I would love to hear more @Candymay if you're willing to share?

Regarding my ex and the mobile story. We moved to a house in rural Northumberland when we first got together. I have to admit she was very spiritual.
The day we moved in she stopped after a while and said that she could feel mutiple presences in the house. They were checking us out she said (it was a Victorian house). Just them my three Spaniels all started to gaze into one corner of the room and began growling. She was convinced we had visitors. Over the following months she was adamant that a couple of the "spirits" were still hanging around. She was so convinced that there was something in the house I agreed to partake in a "cleansing". (The things you do for love!).
However after several months it all started to wear a bit thin, the ex and the so called spirits. So one night afte getting out of the shower I told them to fk off as I was not comfortable with the idea of somebody watching me dry my b*s when I got out of the shower. My ex went into meltdown telling me I could not speak to them like that. I said if they wanted to hang they had better get used to it, otherwise f*k off and head for the light. My ex and I lasted about another eighteen months.

Well after we went out separate ways I took over the mortgage and the house. I remember thinking in those first few months I was on my own in the house that they had gone to the light🤞🤞. Anyway in the three years since there have been one or two "incidents", but nothing that could not be explained by other means.

Well those burly Yorkshire bobbies were not laughing in the morning ,nor when they were referred to my father in the wake of their experience that night.

I have a different take on this. Ouija boards were a Victorian invention, spawned in the era of lurid Gothic horror fiction fuelled by hallucinogenic pollutants such as incompletely burnt coal gas from the lamps of the time, and arsenic and goodness knows what else in furnishings, food and even water. (Not to mention laudanum, the precursor to heroin).

However, an emotionally exploitative folklore of demons and hellfire has built up around their use, so that what was originally a fairly harmless parlour game, akin to a game of Consequences or Truth or Dare, has ended up tapping into people’s deepest fears. The devils aren’t real in the normal sense, they’re dreamed up by panicked brains - but this doesn’t mean they can’t seriously damage the mental health of vulnerable individuals. You don’t muck around with people’s fear.

I have similar reservations around stage hypnosis.
