What the bloody hell just happened?

scorpiogirly · 03/03/2023 00:02

I'm trying not to freak out.

In bed reading mumsnet as you do and all of a sudden I hear this almighty bang on my bedroom door which is ajar. It's one of those crap ones with a frame and perspex in.

Thinking something must have fallen, I got up to investigate. I turn the torch on on my phone as the bedside table lamp barely gives off any light. When I reached the door my phone went weird, the torch went off and a qr code came up on my screen as if trying to scan. I tried getting it off and it closed to reveal the screensaver I have of my daughter. All the icons had vanished and the phone was frozen except for the screenshot which was blurred and looked almost ghostly.

I put the light on and check around. Nothing apart from a coat hanger on the floor which could have already been there as it was behind the door.

Couldn't do anything with my phone until all of a sudden it restarted and now appears to be working fine!

Outside it's always foxes:

Child crying/laughing/screaming - foxes
Old men arguing - foxes
Howling like a soul in torment - foxes

TiredandLate · 03/03/2023 07:55

I've had similar things happen in my childhood home. It was my grandparents house, then my parents, so a lot of years of odd things.. we have noticed more things happening when small children are present the house, it seems to trigger it. How long have you and dd lived there?

GnomeDePlume · 03/03/2023 08:30

In a purely practical sense I think older houses are more prone to having strange things happen especially as they cool or warm.

Over time extensions, new doors etc can create temperature differences so different parts of the house will cool or warm at different times from the rest of the house. This can cause odd creaks from rooms which have no one in them.

Dull but outside it's always foxes, inside it's different parts of the house cooling down.

RainyReadingDay · 03/03/2023 08:48

We used to live in an old cottage. There Were all kinds of loud cracks and bangs on a daily basis - the conservatory roof, house roof, floors etc etc. And some weird inexplicable spooky noises that sounded like an old man moaning that we put down to the wind whistling round the outside of the house and through the eaves. I don't miss the noise, but did love the cosiness of it with its woodburner.

There was a sudden solar weather surge hit Earth at around midnight, we have been warned of possible effects on technology, like freezing, crashing and even burning out. Also geomagnetic events sometimes correlate with shallow tremors and quakes, which can easily wake people up with thumping/rattling doors, bedsteads etc.

Perhaps you had your own localized equivalent of the Carrington Event. Hey maybe it affected lots of people who slept through it.

It was only around 85nT with a Kp of around 3.5 last night. That's not enough to put a wobble in a radio signal, never mind blip out a phone.

Do people actually believe in ghosts and ghouls and poltergeists?

Do people actually not believe in ghosts?
I’v had an experience in a house, and a few others had the exact same one, they exist alright.

I've been having weird experiences since being in my home a year. From banging to feeling like someone is watching me. My dog also wanders around crying at nothing.

The other night after putting my dd to bed I went outside for a fag. I heard her voice as clear as day behind the door. I dropped the fag and called to her saying its OK mammys coming. She was flat out in bed when I went upstairs. I'm the only one in my street with a small child and no.one was walking down the street. It really freaked me out so I checked my ring doorbell and the voice played on there. I can't make out what it says but it really spooked me as it sounds so close.

Maybe she was talking in her sleep.

TheySeeMeRowling · 03/03/2023 09:02

I’d get a priest over to perform an exorcism. You don’t want some Victorian chimney sweep clattering about at all hours when you should be sleeping.

I don't know. I've certainly seen a few things that could be said to be ghosts, and have experienced weird vibes in rooms with odd smells and sudden cold patches. My late DM saw several ghosts, and yet robustly refused to believe that's what they were!

Igenix4 · 03/03/2023 09:04

@Threeboysandadog this happened to me. Our shower pole fell down in the middle of the night, it took out the shelving unit in the bath with it when falling so on top of the pole itself was a number of bottles of shampoo, bubble bath, the kids bath toys and other bits. Frightened the life out of me

bonjello · 03/03/2023 09:04

Do you have a cat

JumbleSailor · 03/03/2023 09:06

It's interesting that you found a coat hanger on the floor by the door AND there had been knocking from the wardrobe where coat hangers live.

seperatedmum · 03/03/2023 09:07

I had a really bad nights sleep last night I woke up and kept thinking of really horrible/sad/bad things like my brain kept sending them to me! to the extent that I thought "what on earth is this?" I had had alcohol and I'm a lightweight but come on so maybe it was a weird night?

lobeliasb · 03/03/2023 09:08

What kind of phone do you have, and how old is it? I have a Pixel 4 and it's starting to play up recently - the screen freezes sometimes, apps will randomly crash and only my screensaver picture will show for a few seconds etc. After a couple years smartphones start to lag and freeze and do weird things like that.

GoodChat · 03/03/2023 09:12

Maybe whatever fell caused an electricity surge?

The door knocking could just happen when you tread on certain floorboards or if there's a draft

Tear in the space time continuum

Either that or the bedroom door is situated over The Hellmouth.

That often causes this type of stuff.

Have you tried opening it and shutting it again, OP?

Get the priest round!

Standard warning applies though:

If you hire an exorcist and don't keep up with the payments your home may be repossessed.

Crikey that is scary! So weird!

I know a lot here don't believe and some do. I'm not sure where I stand on it but there are certainly things I can't explain.

I'll put a few more things here. Sorry to drip feed again but at the time of posting it wasn't meant to be a post about everything that has happened here.

I've lived in this house all my life. When I was a child I used to hear what sounded like a pencil being sharpened under my bed. Years later I found a pencil sharpener in the airing cupboard which is in my room. The knocking from the wardrobe which I've already mentioned. When I was a teen I was laying on my bed and my wardrobe doors were open and the clothes swung. I've seen lights which looked like the spark from a lighter going off in mid air. There is probably more which I've forgotten as a kid. My mother used to ask me what I came home for when I was out. When I said I hadn't popped back she was adamant as she heard the door open and close.

As an adult I've seen a curtain which was tied back raise up as if someone pulled a piece of the curtain upwards in the tie back.

One evening I was saw on the soft and the dining room table and chairs were at the other end of the room behind me. All of a sudden my dog started barking and going mental. I got up and the dining room chair was on its side.

A weird one but I have found tea spoons in odd places. In the bottom of kitchen cupboards on the windowsil right at the back.

Since I've had my daughter there have been quite a few weird things. When she was a lit smaller before she could talk she used to laughter and giggle at the ceiling for ages. She used to blow kisses and smile at a plain empty wall.

When she could talk she would say there were grey people in the corner of the bedroom.

One night when she was in bed I heard a loud bang upstairs so I went to investigate. As I neared the top of the stairs I could hear drawers being rummaged through. I thought she was out of bed messaging about but when I got there she was fast asleep.

I've had a small plastic packet fall from m8d air in front of my on the work top as I was making a cup of tea.

I'm sure there is more.

I have thought about getting someone in but I would be bloody terrified if they actually found something!

You weren't fully awake. It happens, your eyes are open & you can walk around (like sleepwalkers) but you're still in a dream state.

Everyone is entitled to their beliefs. Personally, I don't. If ghosts were a possible phenomenon, given the number of people (and indeed other species) who have died over the millennia, I think it's fair to say they would be much more evident and frequent than they allegedly are.

scorpiogirly · 03/03/2023 09:40

Missed a few questions.

I don't have a cat. I've lived here forever and my daughter is 5 this year.

I have an android less than 18 months old. I always schedule updates for 2am in the morning.
