About not moving on the train?

I’ve recently had shoulder surgery but I am now out of a sling so I guess I don’t look injured. I’m sat at a table seat on the train to get back to my work area after visiting my dad.

I’ve got my backpack on the table and my big bag was put up on the top by a lovely man who offered to put it up. We get to the next station and it’s absolutely heaving and a mother with 3 kids gets on. Everyone files into seats and someone sits opposite me. She then approaches and asks if the other 2 seats are reserved. I said no and she could have them and sat the kids down. She then looks and me and say says “I’ve got 3 children who need a seat please can they have yours” I said no I’ve recently had shoulder surgery and still recovering so standing on a packed train would be too painful. She then continually said “ I have 3 kids though”

At this point I said “I’m not particularly bothered by the amount of kids you have but I will be staying in this seat as I need it too if you have any issues please go speak to the train conductor” The look she gave me could kill!

So AIBU for not moving? The original guy who put my bag in the overhead rack ended up telling her to leave me alone as she kept repeating about her 3 kids. I feel like a cow bag but a justified one!

NC for this so it can’t be linked to any previous threads.

@Harmonypus based on that pensioners should stand first.

Utter nonsense, people have paid a whole range of different amounts on a train.

But under 5s travelling for free have no entitlement to a seat if a paying passenger is standing. That is written into the conditions of travel.

I wouldn't have moved in any situation. Shouldn't have 3 kids if she can't manage them. The child could have sat on her lap.
You're definitely in the right and don't think otherwise.

The sense of entitlement that some people have nowadays staggers me. I was coming home from work one night and was sat in a 4 with a table by the window. I got on at the terminal so we had about 15 mins until the train departed but the train was already very busy. The two seats opposite were taken and a woman came to sit in the spare seat next to me. She had a holdall and faffed around, put it on the table taking up a lot of the space, then put it on the floor, then audibly huffed and puffed and tried ineffectually to put it on the overhead shelf all the while glaring at those of us who were seated.

She then announced that one of us would have to move so that she could put her bag on a seat. A Mexican standoff ensued with all of us holding firm and her insisting on a seat for her holdall. Suggestions that she stand up and put her bag on her seat were met with the predictable response.

it was all getting quite entertaining when the conductor turned up and told her seats were not for luggage and she'd have to put it in the luggage rack at the end of the carriage if it couldn't be accommodated elsewhere. She got off still swearing.

Ahh it seems so obvious when you say it!

But it is wrong. Nobody has ever failed a test for taking their foot off the gas to slow down, unless they didn't slow down enough/went up the back of someone!

I think people might be confusing coasting and not braking. A few weeks after I passed my test I decided to coast down a hill. That is, taking the car out of gear and coasting down. Oh dear. Not funny. I never did it again! You have zero control!

lieselotte · 02/03/2023 14:08

@NeedWineNow why didn't someone just offer to put it up on the overhead rack for her?

When people have been hogging seats with luggage and claim they can't put it on the overhead rack, I either do it for them, or get one of the big strong men hiding behind their screens to do it Grin

Sometimes they whinge and say they won't be able to get it down again but that isn't my problem. I just tell them to ask someone to help.

Seats are for bottoms, overhead racks for luggage.

NeedWineNow · 02/03/2023 14:19

@lieselotte I totally agree. One of the guys did offer and put it up there, but then she wanted something out of it (so he got it down again) and said she didn't want it put back up there because 'someone might take it'. That was when it all started getting a bit silly and then the conductor arrived so we let him take charge.

like i said on another thread children stood or sat on parents laps u wouldnt take a seat away from an adult

they play football but cant stand for half an hour or whatever it is

some people these days just mollycoddle too much

Even worse, they expect strangers to mollycoddle their children as well.
