Caffe Nero

I visited a Caffe Nero today and was surprised about the amount of dogs in there.
It was a fairly small cafe probably around 15 tables/seating areas. There were 8 dogs, 4 of which were on the chairs/sofa and one that seemed to be getting under everyones feet when they passed.
I think it is really unhygienic for a place that sells food to be allowing dogs to sit on the chairs.
AIBU?

Pret A Manger also allow dogs and Costa are starting a trial of dog friendly shops. I have 2 small dogs and I welcome this change of direction.

What is it with dogs at the moment? Until a couple of months ago I've never seen or heard of a dog in a food shop except for guide dogs etc.

In the last 2 months I've seen two dogs in my local Tesco Express and heard of one shitting in the Co-op.

it's sort of hard-wired into me that you don't take dogs into food shops. Am I wrong?

Smokeybacon72 · 17/02/2023 22:31

Wait until you see a cat cafe 🙀

Toddlerteaplease · 17/02/2023 22:38

One of my cats is always asking if she can join me for a catpurrcino in Neros.

pigsinoodies · 17/02/2023 22:40

They could have a tray of dried coffee grounds I'm the corner as an environmentally-friendly cat toilet.

QueenCamilla · 17/02/2023 22:58

Went into a dog-friendly Starbucks a while ago. All the soft furniture was covered in dog hairs! Germs or not but I don't want half of your dog stuck to my coat and trousers 🤢

Can you just tag on to last weeks dogs on chairs thread?

😆

All those saying dogs are gross and unhygienic, would you not eat at someone’s home either if they have dogs? I have two dogs and my house is perfectly clean and I don’t rub my groceries on my dogs bums or let them lick the food. Animals aren’t gross, a lot of humans are though.

I would not eat at someone’s home who owns dogs. Luckily we don’t have friends who have them.

mozzyworries · 17/02/2023 23:02

I've been taking my dog to Caffè Nero since she was a puppy. She's just turned 7. It's nothing new.

InterestingPhenomenon · 17/02/2023 23:02

StressedToTheMaxxx · 17/02/2023 20:34

Erm..neither is OK. You don't need to rate hygiene standards by that comparison.

Exactly. It’s the go-to ‘argument’ for stinky-dog-defenders. ‘But but but humans are gross too!!’

InterestingPhenomenon · 17/02/2023 23:06

Dogs in our local Caffè Nero are a real issue. Lots of filthy animals nuzzling people’s shoes and bags whilst they are trying to enjoy a drink. Disgusting.

They have also ruined local parks. Too many of them and out of control.

Oh well, this is what the country clearly wants and businesses are acting accordingly

PriamFarrl · 17/02/2023 23:10

Cafe Nero have been dog friendly for a very long time now. I don’t go in our local one anymore as the upholstered chairs are at least 10 years old and filthy. I don’t see many dogs in there though……

ichundich · 17/02/2023 23:11

I'm on the fence on this one. I don't have a dog because I don't like them. However, a lot of my friends unfortunately do, and finding a pub / cafe that we can go to together can be such a pain as they will usually bring their dog.

Soproudoflionesses · 17/02/2023 23:13

That would put me off...not everyone loves dogs

I don't like badly behaved kids but they can still come into a coffee shop

JibbaJam · 17/02/2023 23:17

I'd take a higher dog:human ratio in cafe Nero if they changed their shitty order / drink making process.

Our local one makes a minimum of three customers orders at a time so if you ordered first in that batch you have to wait for all of them to be made before you get your drink.

And they've got the fakest customer service ever. I once worked in there for a week due to loss of home internet and was buying a drink literally on the hour for 7 hrs a day for 5 days solid. Not a single glimmer of recognition from the weird robot guy behind the counter, just the same "any snacks or pastries with that?" in a fake smarmy voice.

Sorry to go off on a tangent but I've disliked and avoided the whole chain ever since!

Well, kids are humans and dogs are not so it's pointless to compare as they have completely different rights. It's very tiresome when dog owners drag out the kids v dogs argument as if they are remotely comparable.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 17/02/2023 23:19

My kids are allergic to dogs. If they pick up dog hair from the sofas then we will all be covered in rashes.

It’s the only argument they have. Pathetic really.

Ffs there is always one- kids and dogs aren't comparable in this instance and you know it.

@angelikacpickles

"Really? You're happy to sit on a chair that a dog has rubbed its dirty bottom on? Grim."

I've seen children in the local cafe Nero wiping their noses / bums / dirty fingers all over the furniture so a dogs bum is a risk I'll take. Peoples shoes that have been on the chairs are just as dirty.

I generally don't sit on the chair naked or lick it and I clean my hands before I eat anything so I'm okay!

This.

I know! Here we go again 🙄🤦‍♀️

I think it’s because they’re increasingly becoming a nuisance.

I grew up with dogs and they were much loved, but they weren’t treated like humans. Now they are everywhere you wouldn’t expect them to be - and as the number of dogs has increased the care owners take to properly train them has decreased.

I’ve definitely been put off dogs by the sheer number of badly behaved ones around.

Hence the ‘daily dog thread’ - it’s because previously if you didn’t like dogs you could avoid them. Now you can’t.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/02/2023 07:26

@JibbaJam their order process infuriates me. When people behind you in the queue get their drinks first. 😡

I agree! Also, chipped mugs and dirty tables.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/02/2023 07:28

I've hallways had really good customer service in my usual branch. The previous manager went above and beyond to help an elderly friend of mine. And another member of staff had done the same with another customer.
