Is a takeaway considered a treat for you?

Which day/days do you have one?

What do you choose? Pizza, Indian, Chinese etc etc

People are saying with the price of food, it’s getting almost on par with eating out/getting a takeaway 🤷🏻‍♀️

The prices of takeaways here have gone up with the new menus 'for 2023'

Funny that! So nope.

Nothing funny about prices of some ingredients nearly tripling (oil even more than that) and households are not the only ones with pricey energy. With everything rising, of course they will up their prices...

RealBecca · 26/01/2023 20:27

We dont really. Prefer home cooked. Or eating out. Chinese/Indian/Pizza/Chippie tea/KFC dont really do it for me. Maybe if I was in a city with loads of uber eats I'd feel differently.

I like the idea but they always disappoint and always feel really calorific and dont taste worth it. Rather than 1500kcal in one meal I'd rather just eat loads of snacks and chocolate or just scoff a load of magnums after dinner.

Plus the greasy takeaway tubs and smell the next day leave me a bit cold tbh

purplecorkheart · 26/01/2023 20:27

I have given up on them mainly. The prices haven't risen that much but the quality has dramatically (understandable with all the increase in costs). I tend to go to one cuisine for takeways and have come across a channel on tiktok and other on youtube that post fakeways recipes that are super easy and quick.

Bubblebubblebah · 26/01/2023 20:27

Actually if anything, admirable if they didn't have yo raise prices until now significantly

KillingLoneliness · 26/01/2023 20:28

Yeah it’s a treat for us, usually for a special occurrence like a birthday or if we get some extra cash and fancy something nice :)

LozzaChops101 · 26/01/2023 20:28

We had maybe 2 or 3 a year when this amazing pop up Thai place arrived during lockdown 1, but they’ve popped back down again now, and I don’t like anywhere else around here! They were v expensive though, about £15 per main, but we did two nights out of it. I do miss a big city for options!

Agree with everything

Hbh17 · 26/01/2023 20:16

Never had one.

Never!? No fish and chips? Chinese? Indian? Thai? KFC or McDonald’s etc?

HelloBunny · 26/01/2023 20:32

Rarely. We’re more likely to get something in a cafe / food place & bring it home, if we’re in town. Never really get anything delivered. There’s the cost, then the calories... I like Thai or Indian when we do get it. Which will last a couple of days in our house. Pizza lasts the whole weekend here, too!

I have friends who get take-away Friday / Saturday / Sunday & go to McDonalds as well. I don’t know how they afford it or how they pack it all away!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 26/01/2023 20:32

We tear ourselves once or twice a month to a fish bites special for £4:95 split between two of us. We don’t dine out as too noisy and table service is very poor - if I have to go up to a counter to order or do everything via an app and still collect the the meal from a counter- it isn’t more of a treat than a takeaway! Just more expensive.

BillyBobsFringe · 26/01/2023 20:32

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/01/2023 20:13

We never have take away. I don't know why it's become such a thing.

Not a single idea? You couldn't possibly comprehend why someone might get a takeaway? 🤨

Comedycook · 26/01/2023 20:33

MamaNell · 26/01/2023 20:14

@Comedycook do you think £12.50 per person is expensive? I think that's good value for a hot meal delivered to my house.
Takeaways a definitely a treat for that reason, £50 is half my weekly shop. But also as they aren't very healthy to eat often

When you break it down like that it doesn't seem that much...but we could eat out at a chain type restaurant for about the same amount. I remember the days when you could get quite a bit of food delivered for about £20!

The cheapest takeaway we get is a McDonald's. It's a treat for the kids but not for me...more something I get when I'm too exhausted to cook.

Comedycook · 26/01/2023 20:33

Oh and dh loves fish and chips but that's over £20 now for two people.

PizzaPlease7 · 26/01/2023 20:34

This thread is making me feel awful! We have a takeaway every Sunday without fail. From a nice burger place normally. I thought this was the norm for most families but this thread has made me realise it’s not!

kitsuneghost · 26/01/2023 20:36

I don't really see it as a treat. More a habit

RicherThanYews · 26/01/2023 20:36

For £16 here you can have a 12" pizza box that contains

2 x chicken fillet burgers with cheese/salad optional
An XL portion of popcorn chicken
2 chicken fillets
5 chicken nuggets
A box full of fries
A tray of salad
2 tubs of sauce.

is a LOT of food and their chicken is wonderful.

leithreas · 26/01/2023 20:37

We don't. We live in a small town and the selection is shit. The idea was better than the reality and we were just left feeling like it was a waste of money. If we lived somewhere with decent takeaways we probably would maybe once a month.

familyissues12345 · 26/01/2023 20:38

We have a take away once a week, vary what we have.
None of us drink, smoke or particularly go out so this is our treat.

WFHbore2023 · 26/01/2023 20:38

We haven't had one yet this year, and that's a bloody long time for us 🤣

We'd normally have an Indian, or a kebab if trying to keep cost down.

Chinese is always the most expensive, because you need a good few dishes to get a decent Chinese

LaurieFairyCake · 26/01/2023 20:39

Last week we ordered 2 laden vegetable pizzas, a mushrooms and an onion rings

3 days of food = £30

Thought it was great value ..

asblindasabat · 26/01/2023 20:39

I have a takeaway at least once every 3 weeks.

usually on a Friday or Saturday night.

It’s usually fish and chips, Chinese or Indian. Mostly Chinese or fish and chips.

On rare occasions we have a Dominoes Pizza

Leaves1 · 26/01/2023 20:39

The plastic waste helps me resist cos we can’t afford em

JudgeRudy · 26/01/2023 20:40

I probably have a takeaway once or twice a month. I'd orde more than I really need for 1 meal though, so 1 greedy meal and snacky bits for next day. I tend to go for an Indian but sometimes Chinese. I would generally have it on a day I'm working late and pick up on way home. I don't get stuff delivered.
I'd rarely go for pizza, burgers or chicken though, as I think I can make equally tasty meal at home. I can't do that with Indian and Chinese so it's worth paying.
Vary rarely I have a craving for a donner kebab. I don't know why but I always feel a cross between dirty and naughty after a donner....bit like a one night stand.

I definitely think there's an age divide. Your question implied to me how many times a week so lm guessing yiure young. My DD33s family would have at least one a week as standard delivered. My mum on the other hand probably goes weeks or months.

RewildingAmbridge · 26/01/2023 20:43

We got back late from the airport on Monday and couldn't be bothered cooking. DS had eaten dinner at in laws before we picked him up. Decided to get a chicken kebab each, rarely have takeaway and chicken salad and pitta felt relatively healthy. It cost £29!!! The shop is at the bottom of our street in the main road so delivery was free. I couldn't believe it.

BertaHoon · 26/01/2023 20:45

Many less takeaways here than in previous years, and my waistline is thanking me for it too!

However I do love a Chinese meal on occasion, or indeed a good curry with all the sundries. I'll never try a new place as so many popping up, I won't gamble anymore as to what I'm going to get, so will stick with a regular restaurant.

If it's pizza it has to be Domino's for us. Stupidly expensive, but not too bad when they have their 40% off deal.

I'm hungry now. All I've got is some wilted salad leaves and left over pate 😉
