Takeaways

Is a takeaway considered a treat for you?

Which day/days do you have one?

What do you choose? Pizza, Indian, Chinese etc etc

People are saying with the price of food, it’s getting almost on par with eating out/getting a takeaway 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not sure what they are buying if a home made meal is equal to a takeaway! We had one tonight and for two of us it was £35, plus tip (I always tip the driver). The cheapest takeaway is Taco Bell and that is still way more expensive than a meal bought from the supermarket, which even if using store bought ready meal is not more than £12 for a deal which includes a bottle of wine!
Anyway, we had gourmet burgers and sweet potato fries tonight, but normally it's a Domino's or Chinese or Turkish. Average about three times a month, though when my son is visiting may be three times in a week!!

Notcontent · 27/01/2023 00:28

Being in London I have lots of takeaway options available and I used to get one occasionally (once or twice a month) but have now stopped as I always find the food really disappointing. As someone else pointed out, it’s always really salty too. I also think that since Deliveroo etc have taken over the food delivery market it has become much more expensive. In the past most places had their own delivery drivers - now they pay a premium to companies like Deliveroo and we do too.

EconomyClassRockstar · 27/01/2023 00:30

For everyone saying how much the prices have gone up, I would be interested to know who picks the food up themselves and who uses delivery services. The hidden fees in delivery services are insane!

We eat out or pick up takeout at least 3 times a week. We live in an area that has fantastic restaurants and, after the last few years, we want them to stay in business. We gave up using delivery services though and pick the food up as we realized we were spending way more on the fees, tip and delivery than the actual food over a long period.

MissConductUS · 27/01/2023 00:54

We always pick it up ourselves. I don't want to wait for delivery.

Mammyloveswine · 26/01/2023 23:22

Titsywoo I think you need to calm down Grin

Chinese curry is ELITE! And Chinese salt and pepper chips are totally different to chippy chips!

Also it is the law to get both fried rice and chips..it's a TREAT! I normally am low dawn so doubly carb when I'm treating myself to a takeaway!!

Have attached a pic of a century egg fyi... I'll
Stick with my order but you do you pet!

Century eggs are the best. They go well with chicken porridge. Fine to stick to the tried and tested and I don't blame you for eating 'white person' Chinese food. And if you want to call me racist, then please do check that plank in your eye as there is something unpleasant about mocking someone who appreciates cuisine from another culture.

Mammyloveswine · 27/01/2023 01:51

@blueshoes you are really calling me racist on a thread about takeaways?!!

If I want authentic Chinese cuisine I'm not getting in from my local Chinese, neither am I getting a fine seafood dinner from my local chippy..

Really not in the mood for people taking the piss and being mean on actually a lighthearted thread!!

But we don't know what absolute hell people are going through and posting in mumsnet for a bit of lighthearted relief to escape real life heartbreak and the shittest time possible..

We all know most people ordering Chinese are getting chow Mein, sweet and sour chicken, fried rice etc.. like in an Indian chicken tikka masala is not a traditional food..im not ignorant to that fact that takeaways are generally not traditional fare of the country they represent..

But patronise me all you want..my real life has imploded so what's a bit of internet nastiness and wrongfully labelling me racist?!

blueshoes · 27/01/2023 01:56

@Mammyloveswine if you can dish it out, you should be able to take it. Not interested in emotional blackmail, so I'm out. You do you and good luck.

Mammyloveswine · 27/01/2023 01:58

Oh fuck off @blueshoes you show me who's ordering Century egg on a chinese takeaway?

And I'm not emotionally blackmailing me you wrongfully called my racist on a thread about takeaways??

CassandraColbyColshaw · 27/01/2023 02:32

I just got mozzarella sticks spicy prawns and Chinese curry for six quid from Tesco with clubcard. Add in a bit of salad and some homemade rice and chips jobs a gud n . Bit of an eclectic mix but great for a happy valley binge

garlictwist · 27/01/2023 06:07

I don't get takeaways very often because I always think they're a bit disappointing. I'd rather get a nice oven pizza from the supermarket. Our local takeaways aren't that expensive but the quality isn't great.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 27/01/2023 06:40

I don't remember the last time we had a takeaway - we don't have many near us but they're all really cheap. You have to go and collect though - only a couple deliver and even then it's only once or twice a week.

You can get fish and chips for two for about £14 including curry sauce.

Chinese for two is about £18 but it does us several meals as the portions are bloody massive.

Our local pizza/kebab/burger place has really dodgy reviews so I've never been in there.

Flatandhappy · 27/01/2023 07:33

We very rarely have takeaway, I would prefer to go to a restaurant, so when we do it’s a real “can’t be bothered to cook or go out”, I see it as a way to get fed rather than a treat.

catfunk · 27/01/2023 07:38

About once a week, usually on a weekend but sometimes mid week instead if we've had a crappy day/ back from work late.
We have great choices locally and alternate between sourdough pizza, Thai, Indian and sometimes burgers.
Spend around £25 for 2 of us and often take leftovers to work next day when we've had pizza or curry ad they're huge.

Belledan1 · 27/01/2023 07:57

If we have a curry I tend just to order the mains and get some aldi microwave rice, popadoms and naan breads. Saves a bit of money.

HelenHywater · 27/01/2023 11:49

I'm the same as @Flatandhappy - very rarely get it as the food isn't very nice. If I'm going to get food as a treat, it's by eating out and getting the whole experience. I eat out a lot less than I used to partly because I'm single now, but also because I think it is a treat and should be treated as such. It's such a lot of money!

If I get a takeaway its because I'm too tired to cook and need something quick for the fam. (very rarely as we always have pasta pesto and beige food in the freezer).

Sophie89j · 28/01/2023 08:42

We tend to do a once a month take away, I prefer Indian but our favourite closed down and struggled to get one as nice since. Everyone will eat an Indian but since they closed the curry DD and DP get are greasy and not worth the price, DS isn’t the biggest fan so we get him a small pizza instead from the local kabab. Everyone loves Chinese. Our take aways tend to do for tea the next day too so it’s two meals which I feel a bit better about spending the money but it’s still ridiculous how expensive it is. This month we went to the ‘big city’ for the children to spend their Christmas money so we had a Pizza Hut instead which was more than a take away!!!!

MamaBear4ever · 28/01/2023 08:47

A treat every few weeks usually on a Frid but sometimes in the week as a necessity due to work / pick up demands. Def less common now prices have gone up. But DH does the food shopping and meal planning. If it was left to me we would prob live on take out 😂

DelilahBucket · 28/01/2023 08:54

We hardly have them at all these days, it's too expensive. It used to be almost every week especially with a fantastic pizza place right on our doorstep. I went to a friend's house last weekend and we got a takeaway. It cost £30 for two people and we waited two hours and 40 minutes! We said we'll cook next time.

JustDanceAddict · 28/01/2023 09:01

I prefer to get food I wouldn’t make at home so:
indian - prob top choice & I can’t cook curry!
sushi - usually when it’s just me and dh as it’s expensive
pizza - def one for when DCs are home.
fish and chips - also better than I can cook!
It’s not cheap but Indian prob best value as filling & not too pricey. Would cost more to buy all the spices 😆

celticprincess · 28/01/2023 09:36

Sometimes a choppy tea is essential if I’ve not done the weekly shop yet and there isn’t much left for tea - we all like gosh on a Friday too. Not often we get take out though.

Pizza definitely a treat. So expensive for take out. Sometimes a Chinese too. Very rare we have it.

Sometimes an essential trip to macdonalds or Burger King though when between kids activities and we need to eat a hot meal and don’t have time to go home. Tends to be cheaper though that a full on take out and not as good. But we do this more regularly. Eldest currently has a weekly activity at school straight after the end of the day then needs picking up and taking to another evening activity pretty much straight away with a half hour en route stop to eat. It’s only for a few weeks whilst the first activity has had to overspill to this same evening as the other as it’s usually on a different night.

SquashPenguin · 28/01/2023 09:46

We get pizzas from the Asda pizza counter on a Friday. £6 for two pizzas and a bottle of pop. Much nicer than dominos and so cheap!
