Is a takeaway considered a treat for you?

Which day/days do you have one?

What do you choose? Pizza, Indian, Chinese etc etc

People are saying with the price of food, it’s getting almost on par with eating out/getting a takeaway 🤷🏻‍♀️

This thread is making me feel awful! We have a takeaway every Sunday without fail. From a nice burger place normally. I thought this was the norm for most families but this thread has made me realise it’s not!

We have one or sometimes two a week. It could be Indian, Chinese, Pizza, Burger King, Fish and Chips. It depends who's in the house and who's eating dinner. Three of the places are local businesses that we're happy to give our custom to.

ComtesseDeSpair · 26/01/2023 20:46

Our takeaway “rule” is that it either has to be something we can’t or wouldn’t make at home or get in a very local restaurant - so sushi or Caribbean or from the really good Chinese takeaway which does a great range of traditional and regional dishes involving Sichuan peppercorns, tripe, gizzards, century egg etc. We probably get one or the other of those a couple of times a month. It’s not a “treat” exactly, but when we’re hungover and lazy it’s just what we need.

asblindasabat · 26/01/2023 20:47

Does anyone have any recommendations on what to have from the Chinese? I am getting a bit tired of having honey chilli chicken all the time

Lenax · 26/01/2023 20:47

We decided to treat outselves to our fave Chinese (2 of us) and it came to £45! Prices have gone up so much & it puts me off tbh. We didn't even go all out...

SummerSazz · 26/01/2023 20:48

Very rarely as nowhere delivers and easier to cook at home - would take 30/40 min round trip to collect.

We do go out to the pub to eat about once a month though

How so? Unless someone has lobster or very expensive steak every night, it’s not same price as cost of cooking a meal at home. Definitely a treat for us and not very often nowadays.

Hbh17 · 26/01/2023 20:16

Never had one.

You've NEVER had a takeaway? Wow. Is that money, specific dietary needs or just not bothered?
Would you cook eg your own 'full works' curry, with nann/chapatis, pillaue rice, onion bargees, sag aloo etc

We tear ourselves once or twice a month to a fish bites special for £4:95 split between two of us. We don’t dine out as too noisy and table service is very poor - if I have to go up to a counter to order or do everything via an app and still collect the the meal from a counter- it isn’t more of a treat than a takeaway! Just more expensive.

You get fish bites delivered for £4.95 and share it between 2?

What are fish bites?

Sorry, I'm not understanding any of it. No change there!

Greensleevevssnotnose · 26/01/2023 20:51

My oh is on his third night of KFC. We had two Indians at the weekend. I went out for lunch so not hungry tonight. Not a treat here more an essential after a busy day.

Titsywoo · 26/01/2023 20:52

I don't eat them much now as I find too much fatty food irritates my stomach. We have actually found we really like some cheap takeaways near us - there is a chicken shop and for 3 of us (me and two teens) we get lots of chicken wings and chips and it costs £20. There is also a pizza place that does personal size pizza (7 inch) for £2.49 each and they are really tasty. For 4 of us it costs less than £20 for a pizza each and garlic breads.

We also eat less due to the cost but when we do there is a pizza restaurant a few miles away which does very good authentic Italian food and it costs about £60 for all 4 of us. We have Mitchell and Butler shares so get 12 20% vouchers each year and use them for Miller and Carter or local pubs when we fancy a treat.

I always have to have beef with green peppers and black bean sauce. However I'm very fussy about the beef so stick to on Chinese only.
Just a beef curry with mushrooms is lovely!

If you like sweet and spicy try a Kung Po chicken. Mmmm.

Ohhhh I'm so hungry...

WaitingForSummertime · 26/01/2023 20:54

Probably once every 3 or 4 weeks we get Indian or Chinese meals delivered. For the Indian we like having a mixture of dishes so end up ordering enough that it often lasts us three meals, and that makes the cost (2 people, about £45 now) seem ok somehow if we don't do it too often. Years ago when we both worked long hours it was every weekend, but that was expensive.

I'm curious about the burger delivery. I've never ordered one as I think it would be soggy and cold by the time it arrived.

MysweetAudrina · 26/01/2023 20:56

Every Friday normally. Varies between chipper, Chinese, kebab, Indian. Don't think it is worth it money wise or taste wise but can't be arsed cooking on a Friday.

BillyBobsFringe · 26/01/2023 20:56

Where the fuck have these never had takeaway people come from?

What about chippy tea on Friday?!

Bamboozle123 · 26/01/2023 20:57

I only really tend to have it out of necessity or laziness - if I'm in very late or haven't been able to do a shop and haven't got the mental energy to cobble something together.

However, when I do really fancy something I usually end up feeling quite disappointed due to the food making me feel bloated or sluggish or generally rubbish 😣

mrsbyers · 26/01/2023 20:58

We’ve had one tonight , lovely marinated chicken breast kebab with fresh salad and pitta - £6.90 each and worth every penny

Exdpisatwat · 26/01/2023 20:59

Just me and 2 dc. We get McDonald's or sausage and chips probably once a week and comes to about £15. We'll eat out occasionally but it will be Tesco cafe or similar. I couldn't justify spending 30 or 40 quid on a single meal.

If I was rich then it would be takeaways galore!

EllaPaella · 26/01/2023 21:00

We used to get one every Friday night, Indian then Chinese alternate weeks. We are cutting down though, partly to save money and partly because we are on a bit of a health kick at the moment. Haven't had one since NYE but will probably have on this weekend.

Walterwhiteswifey · 26/01/2023 21:01

We have 2 a week. Kebab with lots of salad midweek and scrummy pizza on a Saturday night. It's a treat and I get excited for it 😋nom nom nom

MademoiselleTrunchbull · 26/01/2023 21:05

No way is the price of food close to the cost of a takeaway.

I can't get a decent size pizza delivered for much less than £15. I could buy five of Aldi's premium pizzas for that (obv not as tasty as a takeaway).

Same with a curry. For £15-20 I'd be able to make a lot more chicken/rice than I'd get in a takeaway carton.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 26/01/2023 21:06

@BertaHoon fish bites must a midlands thing! It’s a small portion of chips with a choice of a pot of gravy/ mushy peas / beans and three fish bites - fish bites are large portions of battered fish roughly the size of a 4 oz burger. We share between two of us and it’s £4:95. It’s called a fish bite special locally. Neither of us manage all our chips if we get one each!

jelly79 · 26/01/2023 21:08

Never get one. Sometimes tempted but it's always a disappointment and by the time I decided and ordered could cook something

Mangogogogo · 26/01/2023 21:09

We have one a week but we’re up north so these costs on here make me go eeeeeek

i wouldn’t get them so often if I had to pay those prices!

Riverlee · 26/01/2023 21:09

A takeaway is a treat.

Uninspiredusername · 26/01/2023 21:10

We used to have them much more than we do now. One is cost, and the second is that the idea of it is usually better than the actual thing. We’ve become fed up of sub par, salty, greasy options that leave us feeling pretty gross. The only one we’d tend to get now is sushi or Thai but again, it’s a special treat!
also pizza takeaways are crazy expensive. Supermarket pizzas are so much nicer and cheaper
