Takeaways

Is a takeaway considered a treat for you?

Which day/days do you have one?

What do you choose? Pizza, Indian, Chinese etc etc

People are saying with the price of food, it’s getting almost on par with eating out/getting a takeaway 🤷🏻‍♀️

We only ever really order Indian. Side order and a main with popadoms between the two of us. We generally make our own rice. Probably about twice a month. We used to order much more often and bigger orders but it’s too expensive now.

Wetblanket78 · 26/01/2023 21:31

Of course it's a treat and gives us a break from cooking. I love Chinese but found out the other week the amount of salt in one. More than RDA in one meal. I prefer fish and chips from a proper chippy. Our local one has closed because they are retiring and not able to sell. There are two in our area you can eat in. But usually have them delivered to have at home.

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 26/01/2023 21:31

We rarely get them

they are either so greasy they give me heartburn (pathetic sensitive stomach) or so salty I am up all night drinking water

i am too old for takeaways 😂 Same problem with alcohol

it seems my body does not agree with it

really fancy a Chinese though, so may have one this weekend and just have a side of Rennies with it

emmathedilemma · 26/01/2023 21:32

The only takeaway I ever get is fish and chips, and that’s usually if I’ve had a long day outside doing something energetic (such as a post-race treat) so maybe 4 times a year. I don’t see the point in paying for takeaway pizza when you get just as good in the supermarket and they don’t exactly take much effort to cook.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 26/01/2023 21:34

We have a great Indian that delivers fabulous meal for 2 that does 3 adults for £30. Starters, 2 mains, 2 rice, 2 sides, 2 naan and poppadoms. A tenner each. We probably have one every other weekend

MatronicO6 · 26/01/2023 21:35

I am actually shocked by the amount our takeaway came to tonight. We have one maybe once a month, twice at most but hadn't ordered from this particular place in a while. DH found a previous indian order and just hit reorder and nearly had a heart attack

2 curries
1 starter
1 rice
1 bread
1 Dahl (DH insists on Dahl)

Total: £55!!!!

The exact same order was about £42 last time we ordered. So they will be an even rarer treat for us now!

DoctorManhattan · 26/01/2023 21:36

Usually once a week. There’s lots and lots of takeaways near where we live, in various directions, so over the years we’ve tried them all and fortunately whittled them down to a few really good ones.

Tend to alternate between pizza, chippy (burgers or fish and chips) or Chinese. There’s also a Mexican place which does really nice Burritos so occasionally go to it. I love Indian too but my wife doesn’t so it’s a once in a blue moon treat if I’m home alone.

The Chinese we go to is brilliant, I don’t know what their secret is but I travel a a bit for work and have tried many Chinese restaurants/takeaways in many different UK cities and this place is in a different league. It’s not cheap but even the local food critic raves about it in social media all the time.

Ponderoveryonder · 26/01/2023 21:37

I like a takeaway , but so pricey lately.
I sometimes make an easy big family curry in the slowcooker in the morning, and buy the sides (rice, naan, poppadoms) etc on the way home. Kind of defeats the object of a takeaway but desperate times call for desperate measures! Still feels like a big family takeaway but shaves the cost right down.
I also buy frozen dim sum/ spring rolls/ prawn toast type stuff from a big Asian supermarket in bulk cheaply and tend to have a variety of these in the freezer, and a good selection of sauces (hoisin, sweet chilli etc).

Mammyloveswine · 26/01/2023 21:38

ComtesseDeSpair · 26/01/2023 20:46

Our takeaway “rule” is that it either has to be something we can’t or wouldn’t make at home or get in a very local restaurant - so sushi or Caribbean or from the really good Chinese takeaway which does a great range of traditional and regional dishes involving Sichuan peppercorns, tripe, gizzards, century egg etc. We probably get one or the other of those a couple of times a month. It’s not a “treat” exactly, but when we’re hungover and lazy it’s just what we need.

Only on mumset does someone order a bloody "century egg" from a Chinese takeaway! Jesus Christ! Just get salt and chilli chicken, salt and chilli chips, beef curry and egg fried rice with prawn crackers like the rest of us! Honest to god! I assume your comment is satire! If it's not then fucking hell!

toucantalking · 26/01/2023 21:41

Wow! Where are you all that a take-away costs "just" £30/£40 - I need to relocate!

MrsJBaptiste · 26/01/2023 21:42

We got into the habit of one every weekend and with 2 adults, 2 older teens we were spending over £50 a time. When we clicked that was over £200 a month, we tried to knock it on the head but easier said than done...

We're doing Dry January and for us, we'd often only get a takeaway when we'd been drinking so we haven't had once since Christmas. Hoping we'll carry on with this and drop down to one or two a month.

GlassBunion · 26/01/2023 21:43

Most takeaways now are hugely expensive but aren't delivering on quality.

Fed up of overly greasy noodles and curries with excess grease. Too many cheap filler ingredients and hardly any main ingredients. Also , we hate gloopy sauces.

Barely have them now.

TwinsAndTiramisu · 26/01/2023 21:43

I would love a takeaway once a week. DH is more than happy to get the takeaway and would do so maybe twice a week to give us more of a relaxed evening.

Every single one we've tried (bar one) has been utter shite and left me so cross that we spent so much on rubbish. I find it astonishing, as these are businesses supposing to be at the top of their field in their respective cuisines. We've looked on FB forums etc for local suggestions, and each one we've tried seems to be raved about. Without sounding like an arse, I can not comprehend how bad a normal night's food must be in these households for these takeaways to be "fabulous." I can not throw anything away usually, but have binned probably 80% of the last 3 we've had.

Weirdly, we are learning that a review stating "amazing" should be ignored. No idea why this two phrase in particular. We have found that if you look on every FB page/forum feedback, 90% of people use this terminology. On everything they review. Chinese? Amazing. Curry? Amazing. Kebab? A-may-zing. New bin bags? Amazing.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 26/01/2023 21:44

Once or twice a week. I'd live on them given the chance, Danny would probably never get them. He's a good influence on me, but I love them, and I love leftovers for breakfast the next day.

We get Indian, Chinese or pizza and cost is creeping up to £20 for the two of us.

Growing up in the 80s they were something we'd get about four times a year, only for someone's birthday.

Tbh, we have a similar thing. I order sushi, because I can't make great sushi. I might order a whole lacquered duck, because I'm not going to have a duck hanging in the kitchen for a week or whatever while it dries Grin

If we had a takeaway that did century eggs and authentic Sichuan dishes or 'home' style cooking, then I'd order from there, otherwise I don't want it. Most Chinese takeaway food tastes like it's 50% sugar and a headache in a box to me.

Midge75 · 26/01/2023 21:45

Generally once a month, when we get fish and chips. But my husband and I are part of a ons Covid survey thing and as a thank you they give us £20 voucher every month - each. You can use it for all sorts of places, including food delivery sites so it’s nice sometimes if I can’t be bothered to cook or don’t have time, we can order a take away for free or for cheap!

iratepirate · 26/01/2023 21:46

We live rurally so there aren’t any which would deliver to us.
If we have friends staying for the weekend, we might order takeaway and then someone goes to collect, but it’s a rare treat. Personally I’d always choose Indian, as I find Chinese takeaway too greasy. Those are the only choices within a ten mile radius, so wouldn’t consider any others.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 26/01/2023 21:49

I live in a small town there are two kebab/pizza places I’ve no desire to try. There is a proper pizza place that does takeaway and it’s fantastic, maybe get that once a month?
Even when I lived in a big city I never got it often. Prefer eating out

I get one once or twice a year. I didn’t have a takeaway until I was 18, they still feel like luxuries to me.

Mammyloveswine · 26/01/2023 21:50

@Ottil fucking century egg indeed! 🤦‍♀️

I agree on sushi though... we often get sushi but pop in on the way home and get the reduced boxes from nudo!

maddiemookins16mum · 26/01/2023 21:50

Twice a month here (usually a Friday). We tend to get a set meal for 2 and an extra rice or chow mien and it feeds 3 of us easily for under £24.

MrsRinaDecker · 26/01/2023 21:51

Maybe once a month on average? I’ve definitely noticed prices going up though! But sometimes I’ll get pizza or McDonald’s with ds or Nando’s as a treat. I’m not keen on our local Indian or Chinese offerings though.. I miss my hometown for those.

LadyRoughDiamond · 26/01/2023 21:52

We live in a v rural area, so no deliveries available. Pick up is a 45 minute round trip, but we occasionally make it work if we’re en route home.

And no, this doesn’t make us any healthier: we have a pizza oven instead and I’ll buy an Indian or Chinese ‘takeaway’ from Cook or M&S.

Tangled123 · 26/01/2023 21:53

We usually have a Chinese takeaway every Friday but it’s less appealing now for a few reasons. I moved away from my favourite one, the next best one 3 minutes away from my house closed down last year and my 3rd favourite one got too expensive after getting new owners. There’s other ones in my area, but I don’t love any of them enough to justify going every week.

Other takeaway options for us during the week are Domino’s, McDonalds, a local chippy and two other locally owned chains. We probably get takeaway from one of these at least once a month when we don’t want to cook. We also get takeaway from KFC maybe 3 times a year.
