Is a takeaway considered a treat for you?

Which day/days do you have one?

What do you choose? Pizza, Indian, Chinese etc etc

People are saying with the price of food, it’s getting almost on par with eating out/getting a takeaway 🤷🏻‍♀️

We're a family of 8 so its a definite treat. The last takeaway we all had was from the chicken/kebab shop and was over £50. We tend to just order a cheeky chinese when the children are in bed but that's almost £25 now for a couple of items. I always feel a bit guilty afterwards.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 26/01/2023 22:53

it’s so good, just so much

Well don't order it then!!!! I have not had a takeaway since the first lockdown. Yes, I miss them, but if you love curries there are so many recipes online.

ACynicalDad · 26/01/2023 22:55

We have too many, invariably down to tiredness, they are never as good as we hope for, we've started keeping stuff in the freezer for when we're lazy instead, doesn't taste great, but so much cheaper.

Gagaandgag · 26/01/2023 22:57

Got into a bad habit of a vegan Wagamama. Just too good. But not on the purse

thenightsky · 26/01/2023 22:58

Boxing day is a takeaway day. Then only birthdays or special occasions adding up to about 5 times a year in all. Usually Indian.

Its an hour's round trip to pick it up, so a pain in the arse really.

Ultravox · 26/01/2023 23:02

For financial and health reasons we only have a takeaway every few months - usually Chinese or Indian. It really feels like a treat as we don’t do it often.

Elphame · 26/01/2023 23:03

Not a treat for us.

Always disappointed in them so rarely bother.

Bbq1 · 26/01/2023 23:03

Comedycook · 26/01/2023 20:11

Definitely a treat. My favourite is Chinese but none of my family like it so I don't bother just for myself.

We all love an Indian takeaway but last one we got came to nearly £50 for four of us!

That's actually very good. Just 3 of us here and we're not big eaters. An Indian takeaway from our fave restaurant costs nearer £60!

Porkandbeans1 · 26/01/2023 23:08

I prefer home cooking and would rather splash out on expensive ingredients but we do get a takeaway a couple of times a year. It's definitely a treat, I love not having to clean and wash up. Plus our local Indian is owned by a lovely family, so I'm happy to pay for the convenience and and nice food. If we weren't so focused on retiring early then I would probably get one more often.

Logicalreasoning · 26/01/2023 23:09

We do consider them a treat, this week we’ve had 2 already due to circumstances at home where we’ve not had time to cook, but now we probably won’t have them for a while.

ThePug · 26/01/2023 23:15

Trying to think when the last time we had a takeaway was and I think it must've been nearly 7 years ago, soon after DS1 was born and my parents came to stay - got an Indian from the fancy curry restaurant that was a few minutes walk away. I've never ordered from deliveroo/Uber eats etc - it's so expensive! We could afford it but I just couldn't justify it, and also I doubt my children would eat most takeaways (McDonald's excluded).

OfDumplings · 26/01/2023 23:21

Occasionally but as someone who was taught to cook by my Father who owned and ran a restaurant I really hate crap food and lots of takeaways use cheap ingredients.

Last take away was NYE my friend was hosting and paid was £70 for 4 of us.

Mammyloveswine · 26/01/2023 23:22

Titsywoo I think you need to calm down Grin

Chinese curry is ELITE! And Chinese salt and pepper chips are totally different to chippy chips!

Also it is the law to get both fried rice and chips..it's a TREAT! I normally am low dawn so doubly carb when I'm treating myself to a takeaway!!

Have attached a pic of a century egg fyi... I'll
Stick with my order but you do you pet!

Low carb not low Dawn bloody autocorrect lol

JupiterFortified · 26/01/2023 23:23

We have takeaways on average twice a week. Bad I know but we’re too lazy to cook some nights…:

DesperateHousewife2023 · 26/01/2023 23:27

Our last take away was a Too Good To Go bag from Costa and had 6 toasties in it. We all really enjoyed it.

mindutopia · 26/01/2023 23:29

No, not really a treat. Usually only get one if there is nothing else to eat.

I find them pretty rank as it’s just bad Chinese, Indian and fish and chips around here (and still a 20 minute drive to collect). I can cook something much nicer and for less. They’re really expensive for how underwhelming they are.

We do maybe get about 2-3 a year though, usually on holiday.

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 26/01/2023 23:43

We have Chinese takeaways. Indian takeaways maybe one in 4 times. We have it once every 3 months these days. (Have done since around mid 2021.)

For me and DH, it used to be £15 to £17 (pre pandemic,) and was for about 5 years before that. Pre 2013-ish it was about £12 to £15 - and was for about a decade before that...

Now £27-28 for the same amount of food/same stuff. We used to have it once a month, Now we have it once a quarter. Both birthdays, New Year, and our anniversary week. (Which we always have off as it's mid summer.) We like a takeaway, but like fuck are we paying £24-26 any more often than once a quarter.

Some people have it once a week, and a woman I know who has 4 kids aged from 15 down to 6, inexplicably has takeaways 3 or 4 times a WEEK. Chinese, Indian, McDonalds, KFC, Dominos. Sometimes they deliver, sometimes her partner comes home with it after work. (He lives with her 2 or 3 days a week.)

How the fuck they afford it is a constant source of wonder to me and DH.

We used to actually have McDonalds twice a month, but like the takeaways, we have it no more than once every 3 months now. Costs double what it did pre pandemic. We can afford it, but point blank refuse to pay it. I have said this on other threads; I believe we are being mugged off/ripped off/conned. The prices have gone up waaaay more than they needed to IMO. Well, they won't be getting MY money very often. I have cut down LOADS on takeaways and Maccies.

lemmein · 26/01/2023 23:45

Greensleevevssnotnose · 26/01/2023 20:51

My oh is on his third night of KFC. We had two Indians at the weekend. I went out for lunch so not hungry tonight. Not a treat here more an essential after a busy day.

Similar here. It's become a bad habit (especially since my adult kids moved out and halved the price 🙈)

Whatwhatwhatnow · 26/01/2023 23:48

My husband would say yes.

I would generally say no, because I prefer food I cook myself. I often get terribly thirsty after takeaways, I assume they are much higher in salt than my home cooking. Sometimes I really fancy a Chinese etc but often feel a bit blah afterwards.

But it is nice not to cook sometimes.

Dixiechickonhols · 26/01/2023 23:52

Occasionally have one at friends (they have a good Indian takeaway)
Don’t view it as a treat. It’s really expensive.

Dixiechickonhols · 26/01/2023 23:54

Have started have McDonald’s sometimes now dd gets staff discount with her pt job it’s £2ish for a meal (burger, fries and drink)

Mamanyt · 27/01/2023 00:00

I live alone, and order take-away (actually, delivery) 3-4 times a YEAR. Yes, it is a real treat for me.

CheshireCat1 · 27/01/2023 00:07

Chippy is our favourite, with buttered bread and dandelion and burdock pop. Probably have it about once a month.

Fifthtimelucky · 27/01/2023 00:08

We have several takeaways within a five minute walk and probably have roughly one a month.

My husband isn't very adventurous when it comes to food so we tend or go for fish and chips, pizza or Chinese. Chinese is more likely when there are more of us.
