Is a takeaway considered a treat for you?

Which day/days do you have one?

What do you choose? Pizza, Indian, Chinese etc etc

People are saying with the price of food, it’s getting almost on par with eating out/getting a takeaway 🤷🏻‍♀️

A year ago we would have one every Friday. Now I can't remember the last one we had! Too expensive now, plus the extra delivery and bag fee !

Climbles · 26/01/2023 21:29

We only ever really order Indian. Side order and a main with popadoms between the two of us. We generally make our own rice. Probably about twice a month. We used to order much more often and bigger orders but it’s too expensive now.

Making your own rice, that reminds me of the Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges' sketch in his stand-up when he recounted his first sleepover and his horror that the family were ordering a Chinese takeaway........ but making the rice themselves!

"Hoose rice?! You're making fucking hoose rice??!!" 😂

RaininSummer · 26/01/2023 22:31

Pricewise definitely a treat but in terms of taste usually more of a punishment. Not keen and can't think when I last had one

Ilovemycatalot · 26/01/2023 22:32

Shame on anyone who eats out of the cheap chicken takeaway shops or KFC. We all know what kind of life that chicken had to make it on your plate. If you’re paying 3 pounds for your greasy fried chicken then you know you’re contributing to the mass produced chicken market not something I want any part in. I’m no eco warrior but honestly surely people are a bit more educated about all that now.

Nope, it’s just food that we have as part of a balanced diet. I don’t get this whole “treat days” such an unhealthy relationship.

Surely it's more unhealthy to view takeaways as a "regular" meal?!

Infinitebows · 26/01/2023 22:34

We have at least one per week (kebab/chippy/pizza) but that's just down to pure laziness when neither of us can be bothered to cook. Usually Fridays/Saturdays but can be any day of the week, nothings set in stone. We probably call at a fast food chain every other weekend too if passing one for a quick bite. Sunday lunch is usually a farm shop type place. Saying all this, we've just had the M&S Chinese fakeaway box and it was 'okay' in fairness. I guess it depends what your disposable income is and sometimes how late you want to start cooking.

Ilovemycatalot · 26/01/2023 22:34

For the record I don’t eat chicken at all but if I did I would at least try to eat/buy it from a reputable establishment.

emmylousings · 26/01/2023 22:36

RicherThanYews · 26/01/2023 20:36

For £16 here you can have a 12" pizza box that contains

2 x chicken fillet burgers with cheese/salad optional
An XL portion of popcorn chicken
2 chicken fillets
5 chicken nuggets
A box full of fries
A tray of salad
2 tubs of sauce.

is a LOT of food and their chicken is wonderful.

And zero nutritional value whatsoever!

NSA2103 · 26/01/2023 22:36

Yes, a treat once every 2-3 weeks. Normally fish and chips.

TrishM80 · 26/01/2023 22:38

All these people who've felt unwell because of all the msg, grease, salt, fat, you name it, in takeaways. As someone who's never felt the least bit unwell after all manner of different takeaways, is it because my body has become immune to it?! Or are those people overly delicate?!

Yep. Many people who ordinarily might give a shit about intensive animal farming/animal welfare standards/free range food have a blind spot when it comes to sweet and sour chicken or a chicken Jalfrezi 😬

Mammyloveswine · 26/01/2023 21:38

Only on mumset does someone order a bloody "century egg" from a Chinese takeaway! Jesus Christ! Just get salt and chilli chicken, salt and chilli chips, beef curry and egg fried rice with prawn crackers like the rest of us! Honest to god! I assume your comment is satire! If it's not then fucking hell!

Jeez what's your problem? No idea what a century egg is but people who order chips with their Chinese piss me right off. Rice is the carb for gods sake. And curry sauce? Honestly why bother eating Chinese just go to the chippy.

gogohmm · 26/01/2023 22:39

Not so much a treat more a fallback because we don't want to go shopping. Not that frequent, maybe every couple of months as there's no decent ones locally. We eat out far more

oobedobe · 26/01/2023 22:40

We do a mix either of takeaways or fakeaways usually on a friday night just for me and DH, the kids usually eat chicken nuggets and chips (we sometimes do takeaway with them but they always want more chicken and chips type of stuff which is not great value for money).

Favourite takeaways we rotate between: noodles/ramen, thai, sushi

Fakeaways we do ourselves; quesadillas or fish tacos (mexican), butter chicken or korma (indian), greek, pad thai. We cook the main and try to have a few nice sides with it to make it 'special'.

Pizza we buy dough from our favourite pizza place and make at home.

gogohmm · 26/01/2023 22:40

Where I used to live you could feed a family of 4 for £10 on takeaways as it was so cheap, where I live now it's similar price to going out for dinner so I prefer to do that

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/01/2023 22:40

I’m most likely to get one when I’m ill, or very very tired. And by that I mean abnormally tired, not the tired that I always am! I don’t get them so much in the general course of things, either on my own or with the kids.

We’re lucky here in that you can get most things delivered. Our collective favourite is probably to get Wagamama by Deliveroo.

I'm about as far from delicate as you can be Grin but I absolutely know if I've eaten a sticky, sugar-loaded Chinese meal. It's horrible.

I think it's the sugar mostly - I eat really healthily usually, and avoid masses of fat/salt/additives etc. My body really feels it when I do eat them.

I personally wouldn’t have them regularly as couldn’t afford to, but I don’t deem any food healthy or unhealthy.

00100001 · 26/01/2023 22:45

probably once or twice a year

we tend to eat out instead.

Stoic123 · 26/01/2023 22:45

Every couple of months it seems- was curious so checked out my Deliveroo account and I ordered 5 takeaways in 2022 (Thai or Korean). In addition, I bought an Indian takeaway for family group when staying with them over Christmas period and had fish and chips once or twice at the beach over the summer. Takeaways to home get ordered when I'm feeling a bit down or ill - and need a lazily indulgent evening.

I probably eat out at least once a month though- and there are bakeries and delis involved quite frequently.

gogohmm · 26/01/2023 22:46

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

If I could get Wagamama I probably would order takeaways! Here for delivery it's a rubbish Indian (the good one is eat in or collect), a really nasty kebab and pizza place or kfc but only until 5pm because it comes from the services

DH prefers the chips from the Chinese. Chippy chips round this way are soggy bites of disappointment.

Emmamoo89 · 26/01/2023 22:51

Ragwort · 26/01/2023 22:51

Probably once a month - we have a wonderful fish & chip shop near us, but no other decent takeaways (very small town). I am sure if the quality was better locally I would have more but nothing nice near us. If I 'can't be bothered' to cook I am perfectly happy with cheese and biscuits and wine.
