Teacher vaping in car

KittiKati · 25/01/2023 20:36

I collected my child earlier from school as they had a medical appointment and as I walked back to the car I noticed my child’s piano teacher vaping in her car. There was no one else about but would this bother you?

OP posts:

Our school has a strict campus wide ban on vaping, including in vehicles. Students can be suspended just for possessing a vape on school property. So yes, I would be upset to see a teacher using a vape on campus.

What do vaping parents do with their children then outside of school hours, blindfold them? Do they have to cover their eyes when walking around public areas in case the child is set a bad example?

Vaping in front of your kids is poor parenting. Just because some parents do it doesn't mean teachers should.

LittleLantern123 · 26/01/2023 06:33

A teacher you say? Doing something perfectly legal in her own car?
Jesus, pass me the smelling salts, I feel a turn coming on.
In the real world, people of all proffesions continue to live lives outside of work, including but not limited to break times.
She probably even drinks alcohol and has sex at times too (I might raise an eyebrow if she was doing either of those I the car though 😆)
Get a grip OP.

F...... hope you notiied Ofsted and the Secretary of for Education and possibly a PM. It's so serious, setting such horrific example.

I personally think teachers should be shot on sight for doing anything other than living saintly lives at all times. In fact, YABU for not having smashed the window and dragged them out of the car yourself!

🤣

The OP has another interesting thread (thankfully largely ignored) where she has to look at the HT's breasts because the HT's strabismus is "off-putting" and she wanted to tell her about it.

OP- your life might be a little less judgemental if you cracked a Marlboro every now and then tbf.

Our art teacher (unmarried) came in one Monday morning with a love bite on her neck, she had tried to cover it with a casually draped scarf but we spotted it.

I had a somewhat eccentric art teacher who came in with a love bite one day. She didn’t even try to hide it.

Couple of things:

  1. OP never specified that she was on school grounds.
  2. Peripatetic music teachers are not employees or students of a school so wouldn't know or be bound by policies that affect either group unless they had received an induction and agreed to follow such rules.

As such, if and only if, the piano teacher was on school premises then the school could ask her to please abide by any policies just as any other contractor and if she refused they could no longer work with her I suppose and make a complaint to her employer (if she has one), but they couldn't fire her or discipline her and, unless it is in Wales it isn't illegal.

What I suspect is that no-one at the school has bothered to tell the peri that vaping in her car on campus (if it was on campus) is not okay (if that is the policy), because I doubt any school is organised enough to give their peris proper inductions.

She does actually

"but it was during the school day and on school premises"

But she only dripfed that bit in later and in any case is a busybody with interesting threads about lots of things so just sending out a teacher bashing dog whistle tbf.

hardboiledeggs · 26/01/2023 09:13

YABU. Maybe they shouldn't be vaping on school grounds, that's not great if there are rules in place but I'm sure your DC will come across worse with there friends.

What a terrible thing this is. OP should report it in full to the headteacher, chair of the board of governors, the local authority, the ministry, and the Archbishop of Canterbury. She should also call 101 and get it logged.

Or, alternatively, she could simply mind her own business.

So you hold teachers to a higher standard than parents? Such stupid thinking only strengthens my belief that as a teacher it's Heads they win, tails you lose. If parents were as conscientious as teachers generally are many children would be far better off.

kierenthecommunity · 26/01/2023 21:43

When we went on our lower sixth trip to Austria, the teachers got all the kids who were 17 to bring a carton of fags through customs for them.

This was in the late 80s

Still doesn't invalidate the bulk of my post though.

My DP is a teacher so I now how shit schools are at stuff like health and safety and inducting contractors compared to most other workplaces.

Well yes, of course. Some parents are abusive and have their children removed. We expect that teachers don't behave in that way.
