To ask how often you go out for dinner

Interested to see what is standard

We are on average incomes and go out 3 or 4 times a month I’d say. More than we ever used to!

We don’t go anywhere fancy unless it’s a really special occasion, so no set menus and usually just a main course occasionally a starter. We stick to Pizza Express, Wagamama, Nando’s, pub restaurants etc as we like these places and often find there’s a blue light deal to be had or can use Clubcard vouchers etc.

We went for a meal on Sunday evening and the waiter commented that it’s the busiest Sunday they have had since eat out to help out, and that this January is seeing much more trade than in other years which is strange given the cost of living crisis.

Not often, but I was out for lunch today. Here, restaurants have loads of great offers on for January, which is definitely encouraging people to go out for food.

FourEyesGood · 17/01/2023 18:48

Around 4-8 times a year. I’d like to go more often, but it’s so expensive!

stargirl1701 · 17/01/2023 18:48

Rarely but we are aiming for once a month this year as a New Year's Resolution.

MavisMcMinty · 17/01/2023 18:50

Almost never, occasionally for a birthday, maybe once a year. When I visit my Dad who lives 230 miles away, we usually go out for at least one meal, often with my sister who lives near him and some or all of her 3 kids. It’s partly lack of money for my partner and I, but also there’s nowhere to eat out within walking distance and we can’t usually be bothered to drive anywhere at the end of the day.

spicylasagne · 17/01/2023 18:50

@FourEyesGood it is, menu prices keep climbing. We don’t go anywhere that we can’t find a discount at as a rule. You’d need a bank loan for full price items at some places.

Rarely unless someone else pays (in laws sometimes take us). We are a family of 6 with teens so costs a small fortune.

Twotolove · 17/01/2023 18:51

Twice a week ish, sometimes more or less.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/01/2023 18:52

Maybe once a year?

Timeforachangeisitnot · 17/01/2023 18:52

1-2 times a month. We are aiming to go for a solid 2 x per month this year, but we are in Scotland, the weather is shit, and it’s hard to leave the dog cuddles to go out in the weather …

spicylasagne · 17/01/2023 18:52

@Transferwaiting gosh I can’t imagine when you have to pay for more than two adults, when DC aren’t having from the kids menu.

Zanatdy · 17/01/2023 18:52

I ate out 5 times last week with different people. Every place was pretty busy

Dacadactyl · 17/01/2023 18:53

Nothing to do with cost, but we eat out once a month on average.

DressDilemma · 17/01/2023 18:54

We eat out at a restaurant (Wagamama, Nando's etc.) once or twice over the weekend and get a takeaway on Fridays.

Greentime101 · 17/01/2023 18:55

Just too expensive to do regularly.

Even basic Pizza Express with 2 adults & 2 teenagers (who need extra doughballs etc) is over £100 and it’s not worth it

BertieBotts · 17/01/2023 18:56

Surely it depends hugely on how big your family is?

We rarely ever go out to dinner because we don't have anybody to babysit the two youngest, and they are too little to cope with a restaurant at dinner time. Maybe DS1 can this year. We went out for dinner as a family about twice in the last year I think. We go out for lunch more often - at least once a month, although TBH it's mostly McDonald's.

I try to go out with friends every few weeks but it hasn't happened at all since corona.

Cornelious · 17/01/2023 18:59

At least once a week, but sometimes twice if I'm meeting a friend for lunch. We tend to go to the pubs/ restaurants in the village, so we're supporting local businesses.

Mmmmdanone · 17/01/2023 18:59

Not that often for an evening meal but have about 3 or 4 lunches out per month. Deals are better and I'm home in my jammies for the evening 🤣

TangledWebOfDeception · 17/01/2023 19:00

Once or twice a year.

It's just not worth the money at chain places, and there aren't any good restaurants around here, never mind excellent ones.

We both enjoy cooking and love good food, so we eat/drink very well at home instead.

HappyNewYear2023 · 17/01/2023 19:00

Usually 3 - 4 times a week. Just me to pay for though.

itssquidstella · 17/01/2023 19:01

Pre-DS we'd go out regularly, probably once a week for dinner and once for lunch at the weekend.

Now we have a seven month old and we've only been out for dinner twice since he was born, but we still go out for lunch or brunch weekly.

I love eating out, it's one of my main pleasures in life 😊

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 17/01/2023 19:02

Hardly ever with DH sadly. We were supposed to go out for my birthday in December but I wasn’t very well. There’s a nice pub near us offering really good deals to help folks out during the cost of living crisis eg £4.95 carvery & scampi or fish & chips for £5.95 so we’ll plan to go there. I meet friends for breakfast maybe 3 times a year & other friends for lunch maybe once every couple of months. A group of colleagues & ex colleagues go out for a meal & drinks once a month or every couple of months & that’s always a pub or somewhere with similarly priced food. I eat out with my parents, again usually in pubs, but not as often these days as my Mum is getting increasingly frail.

Anonymous48 · 17/01/2023 19:02

I'm in the US, so I don't think there's as much of a difference between the cost of buying food in the supermarket (more expensive than in the UK) and going out to eat (usually cheaper than in the UK) as there is in the UK. So for us, going out to eat isn't as much of a treat. We probably go out for dinner on average 3 times a week.

WhatDoYouWantNow · 17/01/2023 19:04

I go out for lunch in garden centre cafes, probably once a fortnight. I go out with my husband and/or family, to a pub or restaurant, about the same.

LynetteScavo · 17/01/2023 19:05

Up to now once a month, but sometimes just with DH and sometimes just with DD (but then it will just be Wagamamas or Nando's or Mowgli) If we all go then DSs girlfriend will come too, so we end up paying for 5 adults, and people order steak as I refuse to cook it at home, so it usually ends up quite a big bill.

But I plan to cut down now. I have to pay for the increased bill somehow, and this is probably how I'll do it. I've already turned down a couple of evenings out with colleagues recently.

WinterFoxes · 17/01/2023 19:05

Usually between 2-4 times a month. Some months a bit more, with birthdays, anniversaries etc. Other months maybe just once. So far this year I think we've only been out once - a family dinner to say goodbye to DC on their way off to uni.
