To ask how often you go out for dinner

Interested to see what is standard

We are on average incomes and go out 3 or 4 times a month I’d say. More than we ever used to!

We don’t go anywhere fancy unless it’s a really special occasion, so no set menus and usually just a main course occasionally a starter. We stick to Pizza Express, Wagamama, Nando’s, pub restaurants etc as we like these places and often find there’s a blue light deal to be had or can use Clubcard vouchers etc.

We went for a meal on Sunday evening and the waiter commented that it’s the busiest Sunday they have had since eat out to help out, and that this January is seeing much more trade than in other years which is strange given the cost of living crisis.

Almost never. Too expensive

user1497787065 · 18/01/2023 15:44

As little as possible. I go out with friends from time to time but I just find it too expensive and prefer to cook.

I understand that prices have increased but I find it hard to justify such poor value as I've seen recently.

Iliveditwizbit · 18/01/2023 15:54

I find it really costly these days but enjoy things like noodles from street food places etc, burgers now and again. Used to love a wagamamas etc but after a few bad experiences eating out I just started cooking more adventurous stuff . I invest in good pans and stuff now instead.
That said , my adult dc work in the hospitality trade and January has been unreal , so busy. A few days ago on a random weeknight in jan I tried to book a table to eat for two friends. Surprised to be turned away from the first FIVE places , all were full.

JadeSeahorse · 18/01/2023 16:09

Virtually never in the UK!

We live semi rurally so nothing within walking distance. We both enjoy wine with dinner so driving not an option and taxis are hugely expensive.

Also, I am what is these days regarded as a fussy eater. (I hate garlic, mayo, vinaigrette, anything Italian etc.etc. so eating out in the UK is massively stressful for me and I hate the rolled eyes you get from waiters if you ask for something to be adjusted.)

We eat out most evenings when overseas as I find most other countries - especially in the Far East/Indo China - much more accommodating.

JimHensonWasAGenius · 18/01/2023 16:18

Last time we ate out in the UK was 3 years ago.

And we last had a takeaway 18 months ago.

Nothing to do with money.

1stTimeMama · 18/01/2023 16:19

Maybe once or twice a year, for dinner. Then a couple of times a year for lunch. We're a big family and it costs an absolute fortune to eat things that I could just make at home for a fraction of the cost.

Baconand · 18/01/2023 16:24

Dinner very rarely, it doesn’t work very well for us with a 3 year old and DH’s shifts.

Lunch about once a week, sometimes more. We like our local pub for Sunday lunch and I do pub with a friend twice a month usually.
We don’t have any chains locally though really as rural area. So all pubs and cafes mainly. There’s one Wetherspoons in the nearest town.

TheGoogleMum · 18/01/2023 16:27

Before kids probably once a month?
Since kids probably a couple of times a year. We don't tend to take kids out for meals unless you count lunch at a farm park or supermarket (which I don't count!)

WordleInTwo · 18/01/2023 16:31

I love eating out.
Cooking is a chore for both of us and it's much more affordable to go out now the dc are gone.
Probably average once a week.

evemillbank · 18/01/2023 16:37

At least once a week

MaverickGooseGoose · 18/01/2023 18:42

Every week although I'm getting more and more frustrated with more ££££ for shit service (chains) and shrinking portions and more ££ for local independent / pubs.

I just mostly think I can cook it better.

RedRiverShore3 · 18/01/2023 18:51

DS goes out nearly every evening, he said there are lots of offers at the moment but he is single so would have to cook for one and I guess eating out with friends is more sociable

DH and I rarely go out to eat from home as we can't be bothered, We have a touring caravan and often eat out when we are away though

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 18/01/2023 18:53

Never. But we do live within 2 min walking distance if a brilliant chippy. …. So takeaway once a week treat it is!

4thonthe4th · 18/01/2023 19:00

At least once, sometimes twice a week. Always go out for breakfast once a week too.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/01/2023 19:06

Almost always once a week.
Sometimes we might have lunch out too if we're out for the day.

Rest of the time we cook from scratch, rarely have takeaways. Looking on some of the threads about how much people spend on weekly food shop, I think we probably spend less even with meal(s) out.

If you spend less eating at a restaurant than when you cook at home, one wonders how healthy the food at the restaurant is... I mean McDonalds would be cheaper Grin

That isn't what I said!!

SweetSakura · 19/01/2023 07:30

Maybe once a month for me and DH.

But very rarely with the children, and not at all at the moment. Two of our four children have allergies and it's just not worth the hassle and worry.

WigglyGlowWorm · 19/01/2023 07:32

About once a week. Went out twice last week though 😬

Slimjimtobe · 19/01/2023 07:40

About once a month as a family (2 adults 2 kids)
Just the two of us (somewhere nice) two or three times a year

coffee shops - once a week but not for a meal

Hollybobs1 · 19/01/2023 07:49

I work in a spa and it's the busiest January I've ever known. Literally back to back treatments all day every day. I genuinely don't know where people are getting there money from!

londonrach · 19/01/2023 07:52

Once last year with my mum friends. I go out for lunch as in to a national trust cafe for a jacket potato about every couple of months. Exactly dinner I probably had less than ten in my life

Desert76 · 19/01/2023 07:52

Dinner - not often at this time of year, we last went in October.
We’re more likely in the summer when the evenings are light and we are out somewhere anyway.

Lunch we go fairly often - maybe as a family once a week in the school holidays, and occasionally at the weekend in term time.
If DH and I are both working from home (quite rare) we might go out to a cafe for lunch if we can fit it round meetings. Probably 5 or 6 times a year.

I’ve said this a few times now; both online and in person. Who is struggling?! Because every shop I go in is packed, you need to book dinner in a restaurant at least a week in advance even for mid week. My hairdresser can’t get me in til mid feb, my nail lady has had to increase her days.

catwithflowers · 19/01/2023 07:59

2-3 times a month. Usually for lunch, not dinner. Just the two of us as kids are adults and have left home. We usually go to nice restaurants but order from the set/fixed price menu which often makes it good better value!
