To ask how often you go out for dinner

Interested to see what is standard

We are on average incomes and go out 3 or 4 times a month I’d say. More than we ever used to!

We don’t go anywhere fancy unless it’s a really special occasion, so no set menus and usually just a main course occasionally a starter. We stick to Pizza Express, Wagamama, Nando’s, pub restaurants etc as we like these places and often find there’s a blue light deal to be had or can use Clubcard vouchers etc.

We went for a meal on Sunday evening and the waiter commented that it’s the busiest Sunday they have had since eat out to help out, and that this January is seeing much more trade than in other years which is strange given the cost of living crisis.

I'm stunned by how often people go out to eat! Since the pandemic we have got out of the habit. Not having anywhere half decent in easy walking distance for frail DH doesn't encourage us either, and it's me who does the driving otherwise.

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/01/2023 19:42

Three or four times a week. One of those is usually Wetherspoons for curry night; others will be local gastropubs or independents. Nothing especially fancy or expensive.

We very rarely get takeaway though, and we eat very simply when we do cook at home: think making a giant pot of curry or stew in the Instant Pot and then eating that three nights in a row. Plus no DC so either just the two of us or with friends. Overall I think it probably works out cheaper than if we cooked 6 out of 7 different dinners fresh every day from scratch.

Busybutbored · 17/01/2023 19:47

Pre DC, dinner about every 3 weeks? Post DC, maybe twice a month? Now it's more brunch or early dinner (dinner at 3pm!)

LadyKenya · 17/01/2023 19:58

I don't anymore. I got fed up paying over the odds for mediocre food, with so-so service. I can cook well, and would rather buy good quality food, and cook at home. I will have a takeaway once in a blue moon. Always fish & Chips. I will not eat Nando's, Kfc etc. If I want fried chicken, I do it myself.

gogohmm · 17/01/2023 19:59

At least every week, sometimes twice.

Beneficialchampion2 · 17/01/2023 20:00

DINK (Double income no kids) - 5-6 times a month.

Chibbers · 17/01/2023 20:01

It varies for us. Sometimes it can be once or twice a week, other times we might not go out for two / three weeks.
We rarely go to chain places and definitely not pizza places apart from small Italian restaurants owned and run by Italians.
If we go out for lunch on a weekend it's usually a cheap and cheerful pub lunch.
We always have a Chinese or Indian takeaway on a Friday night though.

Pinotwoman82 · 17/01/2023 20:01

We generally go to prezzo, pizza express and use Tesco vouchers, but tbh it’s starting to get really expensive even with them now. I noticed a basic pasta dish is now £15 where it used to be around £11 and garlic bread is £7!

MissingMoominMamma · 17/01/2023 20:02

Twice a month in the evening, and most weeks for Sunday lunch.

Its much less expensive now the kids have left home.

Coasterfan · 17/01/2023 20:04

We go to Wetherspoons around the corner most Fridays after school for tea, and then a couple of times a month we ll go somewhere like Nando’s, wags or Pizza Hut after school or at the weekend so I d say probably 5/6 times a month?

Loafbeginsat60 · 17/01/2023 20:05

Once a month maybe. More if we are travelling.

milkymeg · 17/01/2023 20:07

Usually once a month but normally more in January as it's so bloody depressing!

DuesToTheDirt · 17/01/2023 20:08

Only really for special occasions, like birthdays, or if we're having a weekend away and want a meal out. We don't eat out in the evenings just because we fancy it, it's too expensive. And to be worthwhile, I like it to be something better and/or more interesting than I'd make at home, so I'm not interested in going out for a plate of pasta.

Twinklenoseblows · 17/01/2023 20:09

At least once a week for dinner. Usually a lunch out as well. An expensive habit that we've clearly passed on to our toddler who is at their happiest in a restaurant.

devildeepbluesea · 17/01/2023 20:09

Was going to say 3-4 times a month but I think it’s quite a lot more actually.

I like the experience, I don’t just go to fill my belly. There are a good number of chain places (pubs included) that are well worth the outlay in terms of food and experience / no need to do washing up etc.

LordSugarTits · 17/01/2023 20:09

Twice with friends
Twice with the family
Couple of cafes lunches and usually a breakfast or 2 each month.

I'd say average 3 times a week although I've got 3 meals out in the first week in Feb planned already so it'll be a busy one.

NancyJoan · 17/01/2023 20:11

Out for lunch as a family once a week, and out for dinner with a friend or DH, maybe a couple of times a week.

Rewis · 17/01/2023 20:11

3-6 times a month I'd say.

IntentionalError · 17/01/2023 20:12

Not anything like as frequently as we did pre-covid, sadly. Partly, because we have just got out of the habit and partly because the cost of eating out is now so completely ridiculous that it’s difficult to justify it on a regular basis.

OldTinHat · 17/01/2023 20:13

I live alone so my social life involves a lot of eating out. I can't afford to go to every one and duck out of expensive places, but I'd say maybe two or three times a month, £15/£20 max a time.

Pinkdafodils · 17/01/2023 20:16

A few times per year.

It's rarely worth the high prices imo.

MrsHGWells · 17/01/2023 20:17

at least twice a month on average can be, prefer brunch or relaxed gastro pub type lunch, special restaurant birthdays. We avoid chains like pizza express, nandos, wags etc most food is overpriced & average at best and can make healthier fakeaways at home. We would rather entertain or eat well at home with better drinks options.

Pinkdafodils · 17/01/2023 20:17

What do you all spend when eating out?

Lordofmyflies · 17/01/2023 20:18

2 adults and 2 older teens. Probably once every other month. I don’t like going out for a meal that I can cook at home just as well, if not better. So we will go out maybe 6 times a year for birthdays or the like ti somewhere special but pay up to £250 for the four of us.

No, it really doesn't work out cheaper! That's just nuts.
