To ask how often you go out for dinner

Interested to see what is standard

We are on average incomes and go out 3 or 4 times a month I’d say. More than we ever used to!

We don’t go anywhere fancy unless it’s a really special occasion, so no set menus and usually just a main course occasionally a starter. We stick to Pizza Express, Wagamama, Nando’s, pub restaurants etc as we like these places and often find there’s a blue light deal to be had or can use Clubcard vouchers etc.

We went for a meal on Sunday evening and the waiter commented that it’s the busiest Sunday they have had since eat out to help out, and that this January is seeing much more trade than in other years which is strange given the cost of living crisis.

Gosh, well I've been married for 25 ish years and raised 2 kids - in total in all that time I guess 10 - 15 times?
Can we include KFC's at motorway services? That would push it up a bit!

Havehope21 · 19/01/2023 08:19

We rarely go out for lunch or dinner. If we do, it is because we are celebrating a birthday and is more likely to be lunch and we will try and choose somewhere special but with a set menu offer (not a chain).

mrsbyers · 19/01/2023 08:29

Once a month out and once a month takeaway on average

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 19/01/2023 08:32

About once a month on average - more in summer and less in winter as a general rule.

rainbowstardrops · 19/01/2023 08:40

Once again, I think MN is a parallel universe to the one I live in!
I don't know anyone in rl that goes out for dinner as frequently as most on here!

Beachloveramy · 19/01/2023 08:50

Me with a friend/family member (kind of meal you split or take in turns) once a week for coffee or lunch maybe.

As a family, on average maybe once a month. Prefer to spend the money on an activity such a bowling/crazy golf/soft play/zoo than on food when we can cook at home cheaper (and mostly nicer).

hot2trotter · 19/01/2023 08:58

Once a month if that. No childcare for evenings so we try and have a lunch date just the two of us once a month - if finances allow.
Can't afford to go out to eat with all 4 kids but we tend to 'treat' them to a McDonalds or takeaway pizza once a month too.

Favouritefruits · 19/01/2023 09:04

Unless you can Mc Donald’s, never! We can’t justify the price I used to love going out to pubs and restaurants but it’s too expensive for four of us.

BigMadAdrian · 19/01/2023 09:09

We used to go out approximately once a week, but we're cutting back - it's so expensive now (3 teen/preteen dc) and it's often disappointing. We have a favourite restaurant that we all absolutely love, so we go there for birthdays, etc.

rightsaidfreddie · 19/01/2023 09:42

We eat out a couple of times a month (two adults and three teenagers).

We thought we'd nip in to Pizza Express recently. The bill came to around £150. We ordered quite a few things.

I normally don't begrudge the cost of eating out because I hate cooking and I'm not great at it, so it's good to have someone cook something nice for you that you can't cook yourself.

However, I begrudged this as I could have gone to the supermarket, bought a Pizza Express pizza and stuck it in the oven myself for a fraction of the cost!

The thread on microwaved ready meals in restaurants (which yes, I did know about) really makes me wonder why there are some people on this thread saying they go to these places 2-3 times a week. What a waste of money! Yes I go to Wetherspoons etc. sometimes, but not several times a month.

Perhaps they like the taste of the food, regardless of how it’s cooked? Or they just like the experience of being out and not having to clear up or wash the dishes? It’s only a waste of money if you feel disappointed at the end.

I dint have to worry about money but I won’t pay for awful food

FabulouslyFab · 20/01/2023 12:53

My friend and I used to meet up for breakfast out every Saturday. We are both on low incomes so this year we are saving the money towards a few adventures! We have coffee and bacon sandwiches at one or others house now, and we can still window shop afterwards 👍

Ndhdiwntbsivnwg · 20/01/2023 14:19

Almost never. If I go out that’s with friends once in a blue moon

Me neither, and even those who are well off and I mean really good money (business owners etc.) Different lifestyles, I think? Anyway, MN is land of people "in very fortunate position" 😂

rainbowstardrops · 20/01/2023 14:35

@xogossipgirlxo same!

MerlinsButler · 20/01/2023 14:41

Usually at least twice a month in evening here. Once with a big group of friends and once just the two of us. Though sometimes we will go for an extra meal out depending what is going on.

We tend to go to local independent restaurants rather than chains so probably spend about £100 - £120 each time (between 2 people).

Whitewolf2 · 21/01/2023 20:18

2-3 times a month we’ll go out to a restaurant, but usually for a lunch as we have young kids (so we’re not going anywhere too pricey!)

Crikeyalmighty · 21/01/2023 20:25

Once a month maybe- but we do have a lot of cheaper brunches out- think Bills and sausage baps- or avo on toast- that kind of thing- maybe once or twice a week,

LillethCrane · 21/01/2023 20:31

Today is my birthday so DP, DS and I went out for lunch using Clubcard vouchers. Before that, it was November as DP and I went out with friends for a 40th birthday. Before that, it was dinner in London in August for DP and I, and before that, May. We don’t eat out very often I would say!

Withholdingvitalinfo · 21/01/2023 20:35

2 adults and one 16 yr old at home and one at uni. I go out w girlfriends for supper maybe once every couple of months.

DH and I eat out on our wedding anniversary.

Whole family eat out rarely - usually birthdays, Mother’s Day and on holiday.

TenoringBehind · 21/01/2023 21:03

Almost never. I went out for dinner with a friend this week but can’t remember the last time I went with dh or the children.

too many disappointing but expensive meals in the past mean we prefer to eat at home.
