To ask how often you go out for dinner

Interested to see what is standard

We are on average incomes and go out 3 or 4 times a month I’d say. More than we ever used to!

We don’t go anywhere fancy unless it’s a really special occasion, so no set menus and usually just a main course occasionally a starter. We stick to Pizza Express, Wagamama, Nando’s, pub restaurants etc as we like these places and often find there’s a blue light deal to be had or can use Clubcard vouchers etc.

We went for a meal on Sunday evening and the waiter commented that it’s the busiest Sunday they have had since eat out to help out, and that this January is seeing much more trade than in other years which is strange given the cost of living crisis.

WTF? Per month? We enjoy going out, just me and Dh, 3 or 4 times per year.

astarsheis · 17/01/2023 21:36

Every weekend at least once. Usually pub dinner and then sometimes restaurant if we fancy something different. We do spend quite a lot on going out and takeaways but only at weekends.
During the week we cook every night pretty much from scratch. The only 'read' meal I buy is lasagne.

BHRK · 17/01/2023 21:38

At least once a month

Rabbitheadlights · 17/01/2023 21:45

All of us (there's 10) lunch out maybe twice per month will be local carvery pub grub etc and DP and I dinner out probably twice per month also but no chains we usually look for somewhere independent with great reviews. Eating out is my favourite thing to do.

Pseudonamed · 17/01/2023 22:05

Myself and himself go out one night every week for 'date' night. With kids maybe twice or three times a month.

FinallyHere · 17/01/2023 22:16

don't you feel bad accepting this if you never can reciprocate?

Within our family, people reciprocate within their means and according to their stage in life. We are happy to take family out for meals, because we are comfortable enough to do so and enjoy their company. They reciprocate by inviting us to family meals at home, sometimes just coffee and cake.

When we were students, we enjoyed being taken out by the older generate. We could never hope to do the same for them so would invite them to ours and just offer coffee. Or perhaps a picnic.

And now we in turn invite the next generation(s) we 'pay it forward'.

scarecrow22 · 17/01/2023 22:17

Maybe once a year if dad is paying. We never have takeaways either.

JaceLancs · 17/01/2023 22:20

On average once a month - unless on holiday - sometimes twice a month if someone’s birthdays
Takeaway very rarely maybe once or twice a year

inky1991 · 18/01/2023 00:12

Probably 3/4 times a month, and maybe also a couple of lunches out as well

Chibbers · 18/01/2023 01:41

Pinkdafodils · 17/01/2023 20:17

What do you all spend when eating out?

It depends.
If we're having Italian/ Chinese/ Indian then around £80 plus. We don't have starters, sides or desserts as the main fills us up. That includes a couple of drinks and a coffee afterwards.
Wetherspoons lunch anything from £30 upwards as we get comfy then while the afternoon and early evening away over a few drinks, usually with a bowl of chips or similar at tea time.
Takeaway usually costs around £30, again with no sides etc.

Ohdofuckofdear · 18/01/2023 02:05

Normally about once a week, but for us it's usually lunch we go out for and where we eat depends on what we fancy, sometimes it's a spoons other times The Real Greek, miller and carter, Bella Italia, carvery places ect.

When we go out for dinner there's between 5-8 of us(we have 5DC and 1 of our DC has a partner)and when we go out for lunch there's only usually me and DH so going out to dinner all of us is only about once every 6-8 weeks.

LoveCillian · 18/01/2023 02:39

At least once a week

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 18/01/2023 03:43

Never and I dont have takeaways delivered either. I earn a good salary but just don't seem the point in wasting money

Aprilx · 18/01/2023 05:02

We go for a pub dinner or lunch about twice a month. But we only go to restaurants for special occasions like birthday or anniversary other than when we are on holiday of course. Nothing to do with the expense, we just like being at home and don’t get round to it.

Perridot · 18/01/2023 05:18

1-2 times a week.I like my food and like to try new places. We go to nice but affordable places. Google is great for finding places that serve decent food for £2-£40 a person. I rarely pay more than that unless it’s a special occasion

WinterCarlisle · 18/01/2023 07:20

Rarely. Combination of cost and generally not having time! I’m also a decent cook and the older I get the more I’m turning into the old lady from Goodness Gracious Me who asks why go to a restaurant when she can make something from “this small aubergine”.

We’re also vegetarian and where we live there’s limited really good veggie options so I prefer to cook at home.

There’s 5 of us incl two teens so it’s just too expensive these days plus most evenings are taken up with Scouts and various sports then matches at the weekend so it’s hard to find the time. plus to be honest I can’t often be arsed 😆

AuntieMarys · 18/01/2023 07:23

Used to be 2-3 times a week. Now twice a month.

Swissmountains · 18/01/2023 07:30

3-4 times a month (so once a week more or less) more for birthdays and that doesn't include lunches with friends, so maybe closer to 6/7 times a month.

Everywhere is busy here too - it is not normally like this in January. I am pleased for the small businesses, I am even more pleased for the people that seem to be having an approach that life has to be enjoyed and still doing just that, I can see an emerging resilience, people that are fed up in January taking care of themselves. Obv not everyone can do this, some places are more expensive than others and money is tight for some people.

Blanketpolicy · 18/01/2023 07:35

With friends/family probably out for dinner 5-6 times a year.
Then 3-4 times a year with work.
Lunch probably 1-2 a month.

HaroldeVwilliam · 18/01/2023 07:38

A few times a year and mostly on holiday but even a cafe with toasted sandwiches, hot chocolate and shared muffin's came to 100 near me!
A meal out is 100 for 4. 200 at a nicer place

What do you all spend when eating out?

Depends where we go!

hattie43 · 18/01/2023 08:21

Socially I go out about 6x a month for meals and then lots of coffee / cake meet-ups . Special occasions we eat out aswell , birthdays Mother's Day Father's Day and just because we want to days .
I agree Jan we have seen lots of people eating out but then not everyone is struggling financially

hattie43 · 18/01/2023 08:26

Chatterboxy · 17/01/2023 19:06

We used to got out once a week, now only once a month, partly for financial reasons, but also started to get a bit disappointed with paying for food that often wasn’t worth the price tag & I could do a better job at home.

Agree with the poorer value eating out . I haven't cut back on eating out but the last couple of meals at regular haunts were definitely efforts to cut costs . Cheap chicken and tiny portions .

ThoseDamnCrows · 18/01/2023 08:34

We never get takeaways, and I think on average we probably eat out about twelve times a year but that's usually because it's someone's birthday or we're away from home.
We haven't eaten out at all since before Christmas and probably won't until mid/ end February. It's not because of finances but I don't like spending money on something that I can cook better myself at home.

Where I live we have very, very few chain restaurants, no Nando's, Pizza Express, Wagamama, Prezzo etc. So it does mean that it's difficult, close to impossible to find discounts and money off promotions.
