Do you have “big bones”?

I’m very depressed about my body. I’m not fat, I actually have a very low body fat percentage but I have a huge skeleton. I’m 5ft 6 so not overly tall but I struggle with fitting into women’s things and it’s making me so depressed. Watches are so tight o have to buy men’s straps. Rings and bracelets I have made on Etsy because shop ones don’t fit me. The wide fit shoe section never have shoes that are actually wide enough for my feet. Hats are always too small. I have to size up in clothes to fit my shoulders and rib cage and pelvis but they hang off my everywhere else. It makes me feel very ugly. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue and can maybe share where they buys things like shoes and jewellery etc?

I have big bones but it sounds like you a problem with body image

HashBrownandBeans · 17/01/2023 18:59

I have big bones too, always have. Weirdly my daughter is almost 6ft like me and she’s tiny. Of course I’m fat now on top of the big bones so that makes it even worse

SavoirFlair · 17/01/2023 19:01

What is “big bones?”

like, I am not trolling here or trying to poke someone. I’m genuinely trying to understand what this means considering our bones are covered with flesh and skin.

Could I ask, forget body fat percentages - do you have a BMI and target weight which you’ve felt happy at?

do you know your dress size, and is it one you can sometimes find things you feel good in?

ShakespearesBlister · 17/01/2023 19:01

I don't have big bones. I'm just overweight.

HeavyHeidi · 17/01/2023 19:04

I do, my wrists and ankles are significantly larger than DH's for example (and he's very tall). I'm not overweight. I spent my youth trying to be skinny and fragile, but even when I was skinny, I was not elegantly slim, but bony.
I only started liking myself when I figured out that skinny cow will not be a gazelle, and started working on building muscle. Now I'm still big boned, but also strong and fit.

Ghostlight · 17/01/2023 19:12

I sort of get what you mean, and it is annoying.
I have always been quite badly underweight (health issue) but have broad shoulders and hips so clothes always hang really weird. Especially as sizing generally goes off of meaurements of waist and bust - which are not representative of my hips and shoulders.
I try to compensate with flowy clothes which 'soften' all the knobbly scrawny bits but yeah everything does look weird and always feels unfeminine.
My sister compared me to the stout aunt skeleton from Coco- curvy but its all bone.

Puppers · 17/01/2023 19:13

Yes I am. I’m overweight now as well but when I used to be slim and healthy (5’6”) I still never had dainty wrists etc. I have a large frame with broad shoulders, wide ribcage, big hands, big feet. I never suited “skinny” and look my best when I build a bit of muscle.

Leemoe · 17/01/2023 19:16

Don't knock it. I have tiny bones, my wrist is only 13cm.

Consequently I look like a blob over 10 stone/a size 10 despite being 5'9.

AlwaysBelieveInYourSoul · 17/01/2023 19:18

I have big bones. My shoulders are soooo broad from a sporty youth, and my hips are sooooo broad from genetics...I have normal levels of fat but a BMI verging on overweight. BMI takes account of my height but not my width!!!
If you were to lay my skeleton out beside others of the same height, I bet my frame/ bones would be bigger than every other female.
I can't advise on clothes though- I'm a real jeans and T shirt wearer, everything has to be stretchy... I have a blazer but it's a Whistles jersey blazer. My favourite puffa is stretch. I like skinny jeans because of the stretch. nothing tailored....no suit jackets, no shirts, nothing designed to fit to a more standard frame.

Gingernuttie · 17/01/2023 19:19

I am definitely big boned. I can find clothes that fit in all high street shops. I guess I only go for things that are either looser, stretchy, or sleeveless (so the shoulders don't matter). It's less about the shop, more about choosing the right styles? I couldn't fit a dress with sleeves made with a non-stretch fabric, so I don't buy those.
I'm handy with a needle, so often buy the size that fits my shoulders/chest, and then take in the waist. Easy to learn.
Shoes... there have been lots of wide fit shoe threads recently, have a search!

kitsuneghost · 17/01/2023 19:20

I have a big rib cage. The rest of my frame is small.

romdowa · 17/01/2023 19:20

I've been told by several drs that I have large shoulder bones for a woman. I also have quite heavy bones and my son is the same.

NothingButSpace · 17/01/2023 19:23

I always think if you have big feet you are ‘big boned.’ Is that right? My teenage dd has always had big feet for her age and she also has very broad shoulders.

SavoirFlair · 17/01/2023 19:23

Supposedly it is fewer than 15% of people who have a skeletal structure that is larger than average

yet on Mumsnet everyone has “broad shoulder bones” or “big wrists” etc

google “are people really big boned” for plenty of medical views on this “subject”

Sunnyinthecity · 17/01/2023 19:25

I too am quite big boned. I go to the gym regularly and my BMI is 20.5. I am quite larger than people around the same height (5 10ft), but just have to embrace the big mommy energy.

YukoandHiro · 17/01/2023 19:26

I came to say what @Leemoe said. I am the opposite - an absolute shortarse with tiny m bones the look as if thy could snap. Or did once. Now I'm 40'post 2 kids. I weigh currently 8 stone 2 and yet have two massive rolls on my lower back.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/01/2023 19:26

Less than 20%of women have larger than average body frames I've just googled it.Can vary by height too

Do you have “big bones”?
TheActualDuck · 17/01/2023 19:27

Yes, big bones here too. My hands and fingers are bigger than average, I struggle to get bangles and rings to fit and my shoulders are larger too, I'm 5'7", size 8 feet.
I'm a big size 14 atm but when I was younger I was much, much thinner but my frame was always a size 12 and there was honestly not a picking on me.
I know 5'7" is not tall nowadays but I always felt like a bit of an ungainly giant when I was younger but now I couldn't care less.

Shampern · 17/01/2023 19:28

I prefer to think I have dense bones. I seem to be overweight on the scales but looking at me you wouldn't agree with that. So my bones must be heavy, if not big.

ClaireEclair · 17/01/2023 19:29

My wrists and ankles are bigger than most girls and my legs are shapeless and chunky. My granny was the same. Even when I was skinny I always had thick legs.

LindorDoubleChoc · 17/01/2023 19:29

It's a shame you are so hung up on your natural size. I can't believe you can't buy clothes to fit you? The shops are full of larger sizes. Don't be unhappy about things you can't change.

I have to put up with short stature, small bones, fine hair, rosacea, poor eyesight, unreliable digestive system. But I don't have a disability, an illness, a disfigurement or an addiction. I feel lucky for these reasons.

lljkk · 17/01/2023 19:30

I like being brawny. Sorry you don't OP.
Life is about making the best of whatever hand you're dealt.
You won't find happiness unless you can master that skill (which allows you to try to change things for better, of course it does)

@SavoirFlair : I'm happy you maybe right about people exaggerating their size. I can't wear a lot of women's tops because my shoulders are too big. My waist is small, but big shoulders. Sometimes there are ways to measure wrist to height ratio & my ratio seems to mean "big boned." So that's why I think I'm brawny.

God my wrists are 8"! I'm 5'8. I am overweight but I definitely have a big frame too.

Whatdayisitalexa · 17/01/2023 19:32

I have always had small size 36 yet wide feet and thickish ankles and straight calves, in comparison to friends my wrists have been chunky whilst there's have seemed fragile and bird like in comparison. I'm fat now but I wasn't in my younger years, I think it's in your DNA. Perhaps my ancestors toiled the earth and were strong like a cart horse rather than a thoroughbred!
