Do you have “big bones”?

I’m very depressed about my body. I’m not fat, I actually have a very low body fat percentage but I have a huge skeleton. I’m 5ft 6 so not overly tall but I struggle with fitting into women’s things and it’s making me so depressed. Watches are so tight o have to buy men’s straps. Rings and bracelets I have made on Etsy because shop ones don’t fit me. The wide fit shoe section never have shoes that are actually wide enough for my feet. Hats are always too small. I have to size up in clothes to fit my shoulders and rib cage and pelvis but they hang off my everywhere else. It makes me feel very ugly. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue and can maybe share where they buys things like shoes and jewellery etc?

I thought the test was the wrap your thumb and middle finger around the opposite wrist? If they overlap, small bones, if they touch, medium, if they dont touch, big bones. I have big bones, never look small even when I am thin. But I have never had a broken bone, and have great hone density.

LubaLuca · 17/01/2023 22:01

Is Serena Williams 'big boned' though? She's impressively well padded with muscle, but her collar bones, knees, elbows and other parts that aren't covered with muscle look pretty average.

lljkk · 17/01/2023 22:01

... or this one. Look at those hands. Not a petite person.

It will only let me upload one pic but I’ll try and upload the other one in a sec. As you can see in this pic though, huge shoulders, small waist. Massive head.

ps: thought that was Venus, but shows what I know. Agree Serena carries more than she needs to be a magnificent athlete.

As you can see in this pic, massive shoulders and wide rib cage, small waist. Big old man hands.

That is Venus actually. Just looked again. Still, my point stands. Nothing makes me think she has an abnormally big skeleton compared to her height.

Jdjdntbhh · 17/01/2023 22:05

I would say one of my teens is big boned. One is a very slim tall athletic build, one is average in proportion and the other is just big, broad and solid, broad shoulders and chest and solid legs, he literally bear hugs me 😆

No we aren't. Watch the Holocaust films, some men will still have much bigger shoulders etc. The women's hip bones etc will vary. I like the dog analogy a pp used.
My DD would be a six 6, if it wasn't for her having my DH's shoulders, she gets a too big size for her body to cater for them.
Genetics do play a part.

Definitely. People of different heights will have different sized skeletons and bone density varies between individuals. It makes complete sense that different people will have slightly different shaped skeletons just like some people are naturally more muscular.

Me at 16. Compared to the girl next to me

Solidarity from the other end of the body frame spectrum! Same height, but my baby christening bangle still fits, and I can only wear footwear that is securely laced or strapped around my feet. Absolutely no slip on styles of any kind, ever. For sandals (even with side and heel straps), and long boots, I just accept a certain amount of sideways slippage as I walk. It sounds bonkers now I write it down.

I'm pretty sure our respective parents used to commiserate with each other about how much our special width fittings cost them at the Start Rite store 🤣

urrrgh46 · 17/01/2023 22:25

my Dh does and they're exceptionally dense too. remarked on by Radiographers and doctors as his bones show up VERY white. He has very broad shoulders. When he broke his tibia (playing football) the op that should have taken 1.5 hrs took 4.5 ... some of which was waiting for a new, stronger drill to arrive from another hospital!

My very slight DS met his partner at university. The first time we met them OH could not get over this beautiful Amazonian girl he had fallen in love with. She appears to tower over him. She was an athlete until a serious injury.

Then we met her parents. Mum a tiny lady, dad a huge man, was a rugby player back in the day. Genetics are fascinating

Thighdentitycrisis · 17/01/2023 22:34

I think of myself as big boned but most people see me as slim.

5’7 and size 10. Have been slimmer when younger. Size 8/42 feet but not wide
my hands and head are big and one size only / large in gloves and hats don’t fit me. Same with bangles and rings. My torso is long so I struggle with swimming costumes.

My uncle was a heavyweight boxer, my grandad a wrestler and my cousin is a swimmer (he’s 6ft4)
There are no other female children, I’m the only one so I guess I just took after the men!

ChaToilLeam · 17/01/2023 22:41

I’m very short but wide of back, hip and wrist. Even when I was slimmer as a teenager I resembled a wasp as my waist was small but the rest of me not! That’s what comes of being descended from miners and farmers for centuries. Am certain that I am half pit pony. And despite being in various accidents including being thrown from horses and hit by a car, I’ve never broken a bone.

simplesimply · 17/01/2023 22:49

I'm also big boned.
I've also been overweight for most of my life, but I also think that if I lost enough weight to fit into anything smaller than a 12 I would look thin in an unhealthy weight.
TBF the bmi scale was not designed for people like us, when I was at a healthy size my BMI was still overweight

Stravaig · 17/01/2023 22:49

You have a fantastic shape for swimming! (Should you ever want to :)

Another plus is that larger body frames carry weight better. A slight frame means even a few kilos change in either direction looks noticeably under/overweight.

CockSpadget · 17/01/2023 22:52

@Andywarholswig good god, two of us roaming the wild 😂. You beat me on the feet though, that must be a nightmare to find shoes, because it’s only this last decade that I’ve been able to find nice size 9s. I do live in trainers or converse now though, so I just wear men’s.
People can disbelieve, or think it’s fat all they want, we live in these bodies, so we know. The term “built like a brick shithouse” was made for us.
How do your daughters feel about their build? I’ve got one who totally embraces it, wears high heels and loves standing out. But the other one is a bit like I was in my youth, feels self conscious and “manly” but she does seem to be getting a bit more accepting of it lately.

shreddednips · 17/01/2023 22:53

I'm short and generally have normal bones but my ribcage is absolutely enormous. Huge. It makes me two dress sizes bigger on top at least and even then I have to wear stretchy tops because any fitted top/dress that fits my enormous ribs is too big everywhere else. I don't really mind it but it does look unusual.

And if you have large hands?

By this test I have medium wrists. Dd and I are the same height, but different builds. Her fingers meet around her own wrists , but not around mine, whereas mine overlap around her wrists.

I have dense bones. Nay, I have VERY dense bones. According to more than one Dr when measuring my bone density (required for some medication I am on that can cause brittle bones). I also have a lot of muscle mass. I am not tall but I am bizarrely heavy.

I’m another one of these. My BMI puts me at borderline obese, but I’m a size 8-10. I’m the same weight as my 5 inches taller husband, but his clothes are very loose on me. People are always astounded. Even my GP made me get off the scales so she could check them she was so surprised. I stopped weighing myself years ago.

SavoirFlair · 17/01/2023 23:03

Wow.

Whatsfordinnerglutenfree · 17/01/2023 23:08

I’ve got big bones size 8 feet and massive hands. I’ve found it an advantage, I can weigh a reasonable amount, 10 stone 7 at 5’7” and still look OK. I’m a standard size 12.
