Do you have “big bones”?

I’m very depressed about my body. I’m not fat, I actually have a very low body fat percentage but I have a huge skeleton. I’m 5ft 6 so not overly tall but I struggle with fitting into women’s things and it’s making me so depressed. Watches are so tight o have to buy men’s straps. Rings and bracelets I have made on Etsy because shop ones don’t fit me. The wide fit shoe section never have shoes that are actually wide enough for my feet. Hats are always too small. I have to size up in clothes to fit my shoulders and rib cage and pelvis but they hang off my everywhere else. It makes me feel very ugly. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue and can maybe share where they buys things like shoes and jewellery etc?

One of the things that taught me to feel secure about myself was developing a medical condition that left permanent changes to my face. After about a year I realised that I could either face the world or hide forever. I could either try to enjoy life or accept chronic depression.

This is the face I've got. I might as well love it.

I wish I had understood what I know understand 20, 30, 40 years ago. When I was lean and silky-skinned I thought I was ugly because I didn't fit the conventional image. Now that I'm scarred, overweight and saggy I can see beauty - even though I'm still just as awkward to fit clothes.

XenoBitch · 18/01/2023 20:42

Well, I learned from this thread I do.
Am 5'8 (5'9 in the morning) with a 7 inch wrist. I am classed as obese, but my wrist is all bone. Can't get any thinner. Despite a BMI in mid 30s, my ribs still poke out.
I have "child bearing hips"... has always been a pain getting trousers to fit.

leatherboundbooks · 18/01/2023 21:33

I have big bones. Can't get my hand into a bangle, lots of. Bracelets don't Fit, unless I'm lucky: rings don't fit, most ladies' gloves don't fit, watch straps are generally on the last hole. Most hats do not fit. Many sleeves are that little bit too short, most dresses/coats are short to the waist, and to get a cost or jacket that fits over my back, across my shoulders I have to get it that bit bigger. I have wide feet and a dreadful job to get shoes that fit. And 16" necklaces are a no no.

It all comes from my paternal side, my mum was very daintily boned

SleepingStandingUp · 18/01/2023 22:09

I don't understand why rings don't fit, it isn't like they come in a standard size like a bangle does. Honestly if you're saying rings don't fit, what's the circumference of your ring finger? Do you just mean costume jewellery ones? And I say this as someone with fat cos I'm fat fingers on a big boned 7.5inch wrist at 5.4

DuncanBiscuits · 18/01/2023 22:25

Sometimes if they’re big enough to go over the knuckle, they’re loose on the actual finger, @SleepingStandingUp

SockGoddess · 18/01/2023 22:33

Another one here, I can’t get bangles on, huge feet (size 8/9 but really wide), massive knee bones, wrists and hands. Supposedly “large” rubber gloves are tight. I’m officially slightly overweight according to BMI, but gps always seem surprised by how heavy I am to look at me. Big bones/frame definitely is a thing and I’ve also read that people can have unusually dense and heavy bones.

FlemCandango · 19/01/2023 07:16

Yes large frame officially- over 7" on the wrists and I have to have the extra long speculum for smear tests. I have trouble getting jewellery rings and bracelets that I can get over my hands/ fit the wrists. I have always been heavier than people expect. Does not mean I am not fat, as these days I am. But even as a slim teenager I was clothing size 12-14 to accommodate a long body, wide hips, shoulders etc.

Fair enough x

SippeeCup · 19/01/2023 19:30

Rings don’t fit because my knuckles are so big. When we were shopping for my engagement ring no high street shop stocked anything in my size and only very few styles could be altered to fit me. Had to have it custom made in the end. It was very upsetting for me as I would have loved to go round the shops trying on all the pretty rings.

I feel for you OP. I've got big shoulders and muscular arms and legs. Although I've got quite an angular jawline my face is reasonably 'soft' so I don't look too 'manly' I suppose but it would be so nice to find clothes and shoes that fit properly. I buy a lit of mens tops but I also find tall ranges are cut better....then I take em up!
Shoes are the worst though. I genuinely can't remember last time I bought shoes from an ordinary shop. Even Clarkes don't go wide enough.
But I don't get back ache, bad knees and all the other things my peers have. I've good skin and I'm strong..even if sometimes I think I look like a man in drag. Actually I did once look on the Tranny websites for clothing but it's mostly OTT stuff and lingerie. Some nice heels though.

pocketvenuss · 18/01/2023 08:48

No we're not. What in heavens name makes you think we are 🤣

@thirdtimeluckyorwhat I think you're thinking about density and bone size rather than frame size. You are correct that bone sizes done vary much, but frames more so

JudgeRudy · 19/01/2023 21:26

WinterFoxes · 17/01/2023 23:11

I do, and I'm short too, so even when I'm at the lower end of BMI I still look stocky.

Why don't you get a few classic pieces made for you or get a dressmaker to tailor some off the peg things you like, so they fit properly - a really lovely white shirt, some fitted work trousers, maybe a dress that can go from day to evening wear.

Could you choose a watch with metal strap and ask a jeweller to add a couple of bars to it, so you don't have to get a men's strap (though personally I think they look cool on women)?

I would love to get some clothes made for me but that would be out of my price range.....and I couldn't see it working with things like eg jeans. In fact, how much would bespoke jeans cost I wonder.

MavisCruet2023 · 20/01/2023 08:07

Yes, I have big bones and yes it is a thing because I have them.

My head is large and often does not fit women's hats.
I have UK size 7 feet and they are quite wide.
Biggish hands and very long fingers.
Wide, straight shouders.

Very wide ribcage. I realised when I once tried on my sister's dress; I couldn't zip up the bodice. Another time, I tried on a friend's bodice top and I couldn't close the hook and eye buttons at all. That bodice top did not even meet on my ribcage.

For bras, I need a 38 inch band. When I went for a bra fitting in M&S, the assistant commented: "you're quite broad".
I get all this from my father's side, my mother's side all have much nicer bodies.

So yes, big boned is a thing.

NothingButSpace · 17/01/2023 19:23

I always think if you have big feet you are ‘big boned.’ Is that right? My teenage dd has always had big feet for her age and she also has very broad shoulders.

I can only speak for myself I'm 5' 9" with size 8 feet. I'm definitely not big boned.

HeavyHeidi · 20/01/2023 09:43

I would love to get some clothes made for me but that would be out of my price range.

I've used eshakti.com a few times - it's not really the same as propely tailor-made as you can't try it on, but they do clothes according to your measurements.

But @Mercurial123 your feet are in proportion to your height; you're tall so you have larger feet... so maybe that poster meant it's more about having big feet for your height?

Then again, I don't have big feet for my height, but I'm still big boned/well built/ broad shouldered/whatever 😒

Genevieva · 20/01/2023 10:29

Get into dressmaking / sewing.

I find it hard to find clothes, so I make my own. It isn't hard and going to an evening class is really sociable.

Yarrawonga · 20/01/2023 10:34

I occasionally make clothes from scratch. More often I alter clothes to fit me properly.
