Do you have “big bones”?

I’m very depressed about my body. I’m not fat, I actually have a very low body fat percentage but I have a huge skeleton. I’m 5ft 6 so not overly tall but I struggle with fitting into women’s things and it’s making me so depressed. Watches are so tight o have to buy men’s straps. Rings and bracelets I have made on Etsy because shop ones don’t fit me. The wide fit shoe section never have shoes that are actually wide enough for my feet. Hats are always too small. I have to size up in clothes to fit my shoulders and rib cage and pelvis but they hang off my everywhere else. It makes me feel very ugly. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue and can maybe share where they buys things like shoes and jewellery etc?

I have always had small size 36 yet wide feet and thickish ankles and straight calves, in comparison to friends my wrists have been chunky whilst there's have seemed fragile and bird like in comparison. I'm fat now but I wasn't in my younger years, I think it's in your DNA. Perhaps my ancestors toiled the earth and were strong like a cart horse rather than a thoroughbred!

This is what I think - my ancestors were good strong farming stock who ploughed the fields and milked cows all day 😂

Im 5”8 with hands larger than my 6”2” dh and size 8 feet. Thick wrists and ankles. Even when I had an eating disorder as a teen and had everyone telling me how ill I looked I was still never any lower than an 8-10 and never weighed below 9 stone despite subsisting on fruit and eggs.

I too can rarely find rings/hats to fit. I certainly don’t feel unattractive though, quite the opposite in fact!

Squirrelsnut · 17/01/2023 20:24

Yep, broad, angular shoulders (which I quite like), thick joints, large hands, size R ring finger, 5'8".
I've always weighed 'heavy' in relation to my appearance/clothes size.
I agree with pp that there's no point wasting energy lamenting your skeleton!

What is “big bones?”

like, I am not trolling here or trying to poke someone. I’m genuinely trying to understand what this means considering our bones are covered with flesh and skin.

Could I ask, forget body fat percentages - do you have a BMI and target weight which you’ve felt happy at?

do you know your dress size, and is it one you can sometimes find things you feel good in?

So my friend is a size 4-6, and about 5ft 6. Imagine a ballerina, very dainty and petite, she's that kind of build
I'm 5ft 10 and my shoulders and hips are about twice the width of hers, my feet and wrists are big. No matter how much weight I lost, I would never be as dainty as she is
I always feel like a lumbering giant and I guess not feminine sometimes, am an hourglass shape but take after the males in the family who are a heavy broad build
Like the difference between a slightly built man and a heavyweight boxer

SavoirFlair · 17/01/2023 19:23

Supposedly it is fewer than 15% of people who have a skeletal structure that is larger than average

yet on Mumsnet everyone has “broad shoulder bones” or “big wrists” etc

google “are people really big boned” for plenty of medical views on this “subject”

What a load of tripe. You do realise that the OP asked if anyone was big boned? Obviously a high proportion of people who respond will say yes because it's something they can relate to. Just like people who like running might answer a question about runners. Or people who wear glasses might answer a post about glasses, etc etc

LavenderHillMob · 17/01/2023 20:36

I've just measured my wrists and they are large by princesses' measurements and you should see my knees! I'm clearly descended from Nellie the elephant.

On the other hand ... my knees are larger than my DH's who is a foot taller but far more functional. I'm in my 50s and about 10lb overweight but I can run without knee pain whilst my tall DH with delicate little knees moans going up a flight of stairs.

I don't believe in big bones. When we are skeletons we are the same

SavoirFlair · 17/01/2023 20:51

I just can’t get with this. I really can’t.

Yep, you got me, I'm all fat from the knee down.

All dogs have the same skeleton too. It's just a wee chihuahua skeleton in there, the rest is just padding on a Great Dane.

SippeeCup · 17/01/2023 21:04

I’m not asking anyone to “get with it”.

Im asking people who are in the same position how they feel about it and if they can relate.

I just can’t get with this. I really can’t.

So in your first post you honestly wanted to know, which I replied to.

I can only now assume that the part you can't "get with" is reading comprehension.

So to be clear, you "can't get with" the idea that some humans have bones that are smaller or larger than the average range?

Do you have this problem in other areas of your life? You must, if you are confused by the idea of physical objects having a different size or shape to others.

Proteinpudding · 17/01/2023 21:07

@thirdtimeluckyorwhat what you 'believe' in isn't relevant, if you bother to look at people the evidence is there in front of you.

I have a small frame. I have broadened my shoulders through weight training but I'm still very narrow compared to peers. I wear a 28 band bra and have small wrists/ankles etc. There is no chance that you could put my skeleton next to my 6ft broad shouldered wide hipped friends and declare we were the same and it's just bodyfat. Most of us don't carry a lot of bodyfat on our heads, yet our heads aren't all the same size!

As other PPs have mentioned I think looking for styles that suit rather than particular brands is key when it comes to different body shapes.

No we aren't. Watch the Holocaust films, some men will still have much bigger shoulders etc. The women's hip bones etc will vary. I like the dog analogy a pp used.
My DD would be a six 6, if it wasn't for her having my DH's shoulders, she gets a too big size for her body to cater for them.
Genetics do play a part.

tabulahrasa · 17/01/2023 21:19

Some of mine are bigger than others...

I’m 5 ft 7.5, wear size 7 shoes, though I’m really a 61/2 but they don’t come wide enough. At a BMI of 21, I was a size 12 or 14 because my hip and shoulder bones wouldn’t fit in anything smaller.

But I can wear hats and gloves aimed at 5 year olds 😐🤣

NoNameNowAgain · 17/01/2023 21:34

SavoirFlair · 17/01/2023 20:51

I just can’t get with this. I really can’t.

Think of bra sizes. If you’re 38AA, you have small breasts and a large rib cage. Skeletons vary.
Shoe sizes vary.

Andywarholswig · 17/01/2023 21:36

@CockSpadget I think you are me, down to the 2 DDs and living in next tall jeans! I wear size 10 shoes though.

To those that think it’s a euphemism for being fat, it’s a real thing. I can’t wear womens hats or gloves, my extra large mens north face gloves are tight (but oh so warm). I had to buy my new summer hat from a special shop as i need a 61cm circumference. I can’t buy bangles or bracelets and have had to go for the largest size Iwatch strap. I’m just really tall and solid.

tulippa · 17/01/2023 21:38

I would say my bones are big in the sense that they're really obvious. So, I have a massive bony lump that sticks out the back of my neck and really noticeable collar bones. Ribs that show even though I'm not underweight. I have big hands and feet but really skinny wrists, arms and ankles. I can't wear bangles because if I can get them over my hand, they end up back round my fingers or go up to my elbow. I came up as having a small frame on the wrist calculator but feel like my back is pretty broad. Maybe I'm just strange?
I have no idea how much my bones weigh but I have got to the age of 44 without ever breaking one and I don't eat/drink much dairy.

LikeTearsInRain · 17/01/2023 21:38

Anyone who is low body fat/slim but also big boned care to show a photo of their physique?

I’ve only known people to say it who are clearly overweight, and even if they do look to have a larger frame, I can’t imagine what they’d look like at a healthier weight.

LavenderHillMob · 17/01/2023 21:41

SavoirFlair · 17/01/2023 20:51

I just can’t get with this. I really can’t.

Finding it so funny that some people don't believe that human skeletons are different.

Regardless of whether you can get with it it's fairly objective!

Pickingmyselfup · 17/01/2023 21:42

Hips and legs yes but everything else is small. Makes me look very uneven and I hate it but I'm trying to not let it get to me. The small bones also get on my nerves actually because it's tough trying to find necklaces and bracelets to fit the way I want, same with rings because I have baby hands.

turkeyboots · 17/01/2023 21:45

I'm another big head person. Age 13 and 9 stone I needed the largest men's size riding hat! I still can't wear women's hats. But I have tiny hands and feet, bodies are werid.

Titoti · 17/01/2023 21:46

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/01/2023 19:26

Less than 20%of women have larger than average body frames I've just googled it.Can vary by height too

Interesting!

My BMI is 22, I'm a size 8, 5'1 and my wrists measure 6 inches. I have very narrow hips but broad shoulders. I've always thought I looked 'wide'.

Rebel2023 · 17/01/2023 21:46

Struggling to find images but here
the size 6 next to the size 16, totally different frames even if they were stripped of fat
male pic - Tom Daley and friends. You can see the two outer are bigger framed than the middle one
Celebrity wise… maybe Kylie v Nicole Kidman? They’re both slim, but again different frames. It’s like a slim, smaller, 5ft 7 man next to a broad 6ft 4 man. The broader one isn’t necessarily fatter, they’re broader/bigger built

I have big bones. Big feet, wrists twice the size of the average woman. Wide ribcage. Even my face and cheekbones are broad. Peasant stock, built for carrying heavy loads. I will never look slim.

LubaLuca · 17/01/2023 21:53

I think I have a small frame under the podge, but I'm short so I imagine I'd look very odd with unusually thick bones. I assume bones are scaled down in width as well length. I don't know how visible that difference is externally though, probably not at all. I mean my shoulders are not remarkably narrow, my collar bones look normal, and my knee caps and elbows are pretty standard I think - the visible bones aren't different to anyone else's I don't think.

lljkk · 17/01/2023 21:53

No because it's too cold & I'm rubbish at taking anonymous selfies.

But I'm built like this lady...Just not as alluring, lol.
