Gender recognition reform blocked

hadntbeen · 16/01/2023 22:29

Scottish Secretary Alister Jack has made an order under section 35 of the Scotland Act 1998, preventing the Scottish Parliament’s Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill from proceeding to Royal Assent.
Thank god 🙏🏻 I am an SNP supporter but this is one bill I was wholeheartedly against. I'm glad and relieved this decision was made.

I don't hate trans people...at all...never have, never will. I feel very sorry for them.

Regardless of anyone's views on trans issues, I think it sets a dangerous precedent that Westminster can overrule the devolved governments.

They have limited powers. That has always been the case.
Granted, I doubt Blair anticipated this issue when the devolution treaties were drafted. Or maybe he did? Idk

I think it's essential they have that ability.
And if I was Westminster I'd be cutting their pocket money too.

hadntbeen · 16/01/2023 22:43

Their 'pocket money'? Confused you do know how much money Scotland sends to Westminster and how much they get back don't you?

It's not a popular bill with Sottish people, though, is it? Once they see the detail of it and hear Maggie Chapman wanging on?

Sturgeon is just manipulating this.

AutumnCrow · 16/01/2023 22:44

SCOTTISH apologies ^^

beastlyslumber · 16/01/2023 22:45

Thank God for that.

Terrifying thought that Scotland could destroy women's rights across the whole of the UK and have an industry providing hormones and surgeries for children.

The devolved governments have never been that powerful

Coyoacan · 16/01/2023 22:46

It's not anti-trans at all, it's about defending women's rights to safe spaces. I'm not anti-men -my best friend is a man- but there is a reason why they are not allowed into women's prisons, shelters, changing rooms and sports. Making self ID law, meant that any man can enter any women's space without even having to pretend to be trans

PoochPalace · 16/01/2023 22:46

Devolved governments shouldn’t be able to enact law that impact the rest of the UK.

This!!

PurpleLoons · 16/01/2023 22:48

I thought the issue was that the legislation would have UK impact and therefore exceeded the scope of devolved government - so it was a devolved government impacting on the wider UK, not the other way round.

correct

Rainbowshit · 16/01/2023 22:51

I'm delighted although slightly nervous about the knock on impact on scexit.

Have you all seen that deranged lunatic Maggie Chapman say she doesn't know what sex she is and that 6 year olds should be able to choose to change their legal sex? That's what we're dealing with in Scotland.

Well said.
im massively relieved. Dd has got sucked into the whole trans thing. They are now getting sucked into the hormone, medical thing.
they are totally naive, horrifyingly I’ll informed and being relentlessly persueded by a horrifying number of supposed mental health services and trans people with vested interest.
land I can do nothing as they are 17.

xalo · 16/01/2023 22:54

Thank god

Thon · 16/01/2023 22:55

I like Sturgeon but she’s wrong on this and it will be her undoing. She would have known full well this would be blocked and will use it to argue for another referendum on Scottish independence. More fool her.

Only the hard of thinking imagine that allowing ANYONE to make a statutory declaration in order to get a new birth certificate helps trans people.

This bill harms everyone except those wishing to use it for nefarious purposes so I'm glad Westminster has stepped into to prevent UK wide fall out.
