Gender recognition reform blocked

Scottish Secretary Alister Jack has made an order under section 35 of the Scotland Act 1998, preventing the Scottish Parliament’s Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill from proceeding to Royal Assent.
Thank god 🙏🏻 I am an SNP supporter but this is one bill I was wholeheartedly against. I'm glad and relieved this decision was made.

It’s incredibly boring to throw words like ‘transphobic’ and ‘bigot’ about when you have no idea what you're talking about. You can’t don’t provide any examples to back up this claim.

You just said you agreed with me then backtrack and say if I fail to see transphobic comments on MN then ergo I am transphobic and a bigot🤣

Take yourself off mate.

Regardless of whether you think this bill should or should not go ahead. It is totally outrageous that the English government have overruled the Scottish parliament.

Ever strengthening the need for independence

It is the only time Westminster have used article 35 or whatever number it is and is because Nicola Sturgeon has attempted to enact something in law that affects the rest of the UK - without consultation with the rest of the UK.

It was a rather enlightening interview that Starmer gave on Sunday and I think anyone who has a superficial grasp of this issue would not have probably noticed.

Starmer, a Human rights barrister, was saying there is an issue with the EA and this proposed Scottish law.

It really cannot be clearer.

Just typing the words 'this will not impact the EA' on the first page of a document, doesn't mean that it will not impact the EA. It is remarkable how far society has come that people actually believe that just saying something over and over means that it is material reality.

I noticed yesterday many MPs holding up the briefing document and repeating the words 'flimsy'? The hypocrisy was rather staggering actually.

Its outrageous that the Scottish government thought they could introduce such a damaging piece of legislation and expect to not be overruled, especially since it would affect us in England was well.
Its almost as if they knew it would be overruled and went ahead anyway, just so they could complain about how badly they are being treated. The SNP have treated people as political footballs. They should know better than to play fast and loose with human rights, it never ends well.

The problem was the Scottish Government attempting to overrule the UK government.

And of course, the UK government is democratically elected by the whole of the UK, including Scottish people. It's not the 'English government'.

bellinisurge · 18/01/2023 13:56

It's not the English government. Don't be childish. Or ignorant. Doesn't help your position.

James o Brian is an Incredibly rich little tit mouse who is clearly afraid of strong women. He's on a par with Sadiq khan the equally useless mayor.

@maddy68 - you are a copper bottomed idiot. If you want to be an independent Scot you've got to be cleverer than that
