To not feel safe in changing rooms anymore?

nypost.com/2023/01/14/sighting-of-trans-womans-penis-in-ymca-locker-room-sparks-tears/

Another story about an inappropriate man in a woman's changing room - is this what we are going to see more of in the UK now too? Having been both flashed and sexually assaulted in a public place, this chills me to the bone. Men who get a thrill out of exposing themselves to women will use any opportunity to do so. To think that they won't abuse women's spaces is to be wilfully and dangerously naive.

YANBU - Not unreasonable to think that flashing is flashing regardless of self ID and magical feelings.

YABU - Be kind to men etc etc

This is what happened at a USA spa when a male sexual predator claimed to be trans and exposed himself in front of women and a young girl:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11555915/Transgender-pervert-arrested-15-months-exposed-women-Wi-Spa-LA.htmlchild

And for balance, here's the Guardian's take on it:
www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/28/anti-trans-video-los-angeles-protest-wi-spa

Oh wait - they weren't at all bothered about indecent exposure and the child - more about the man's rights to expose himself in a women's changing room.

YANBU

I don’t shop in the shops anymore for a number of reasons. I just buy online and send it back if not good.

I would only use a changing cubicle with a door. Using curtains seems outdated now. Half the time they are pulled shut, but some could be empty anyway.

Giggorata · 15/01/2023 14:17

“Many on here regularly forget their anti trans views are a minority one.”

@Limesodas, you forget that concerns about women and their sex based rights are not “anti trans”.

LlynTegid · 15/01/2023 14:17

If (and I am not confident it will happen) section 35 is used by the UK government to veto the Scottish Parliament bill legalising self ID, it will be one small step forward against this.

Inadequate and unsupervised retail store changing areas are the main contributor here I think, which come about because of our retailing model, which in my opinion is a national shame. Many things contribute to this, I could think of at least ten, and the start of this really came about from the period of time when a woman was the UK Prime Minister.

Not that it has anything to do with the experiences described above outside stores.

CaraVann · 15/01/2023 14:17

Limesodas then count yourself lucky you have never been in a vulnerable position with a male or abused by one.
Sadly many women have and their rights to safety should not be overshadowed by a small minority who believe their rights trump and overrule females who deserve a safe place to go to the toilet or change clothes , get dressed after swimming or the gym etc.

CaraVann · 15/01/2023 14:12

YANBU - the female anatomy does not include a penis, therefore anyone with one has no place in a female only area.

Exactly this 100%...
No debating needed.

Of course they are

I don’t give a fig who is changing next to me, neither does any woman I know. It’s something you only really seen moaned about on here or on JK Rowlings Twitter feed.

Thankfully times are changing and my views are the norm and are being continually validated by new legislation and political support.

Quinoawoman · 15/01/2023 14:28

So the changing rooms at my local pool are mixed, with lots of cubicles. People are expected to keep their swimsuit on when they shower (unless it's a cubicle shower) and change IN the lockers. It would be frowned upon for ANYONE to get their genitals out if front of anyone else, whether male, female, trans or whatever. I've never felt unsafe there or in any changing rooms.

Perhaps the answer is fewer flimsy curtains and more cubicles that lock on the inside, rather than mass hysteria and transphobia?

HermioneWeasley · 15/01/2023 14:33

YANBU it’s so regressive. I worry about my mother having a single sex ward if she needs to go into hospital, and about just about everything for my daughter.

HermioneWeasley · 15/01/2023 14:34

@Quinoawoman if you see anything transphobic, you should report it.

women wanting their existing rights under the Equality Act to be upheld isn’t transphobia though.

Quinoawoman · 15/01/2023 14:38

Thanks for the tip. Just reported 3 comments.

Separated sex work. It's not transphobic to want biological males to stay out of womens spaces.

FlowerArranger · 15/01/2023 14:42

I don't know what crazy circles you move in, @Limesodas , but I and just about everyone I know will not give up our rights to sex-based spaces. What you are advocating is a free for all for peeping toms and potential abusers.

atteatimeeverybodyagrees · 15/01/2023 14:42

Spidey66 · 15/01/2023 13:28

Maybe he thought it was his wife.....but that's me being generous. You'd still say outside' which cubicle are you in, Sue?' surely.

Yes really sorry @pishkashalante, and I know you are the one this happened to, but I wouldn't be too sure it was accident. The mixed changing rooms can be a nightmare for pervs.

Yeah I'd be up for floor to ceiling lockable doors

Giggorata · 15/01/2023 14:43

Trying to frame women wanting our sex based rights and safety to be maintained as hysteria and as transphobia is not a coherent argument against it.

I don't know anyone either who's voiced any particular concerns about sharing changing rooms.

I'm not over bothered about it but evidently people's views vary.

Are supposed to be outraged and offended by the mere sight of a penis? Let's not get all coy and Victorian!! Surely it all depends on what the owner is doing with it?

Of course, we are supposed to weep at the mere sight of a penis as women are so ‘vulnerable’
