Every time I watch Happy Valley, I want to live there.
I live abroad, but am originally from the North west, no idea why I never visited Yorkshire 🤷🏻‍♀️
Is it as lovely as it looks, people who live there/have visited?

God's own country, don't y' know?

Pootles34 · 14/01/2023 22:54

Its quite big, some bits are a bit meh but yes some bits are stunning, particularly the dales.

ShinyMe · 14/01/2023 22:54

I live in Derbyshire, it's much nicer.

GiltEdges · 14/01/2023 22:54

Yorkshire is a big place. Like most places, some parts are lovely, others are very much not. As a place to live, I like it personally.

AWaferThinMint · 14/01/2023 22:55

Best County there is (biased) 🤣

But yes, it had the capacity to be truly beautiful. Just ignore the shit bits.

IDontCareMatthew · 14/01/2023 22:55

Yorkshire towns are run down

Go for a visit

What's the difference between God and a Yorkshireman?
God knows He's not from Yorkshire!!!!

Disclaimer-I'm from Lancashire 😂

Jazzy21 · 14/01/2023 22:56

Yorkshire born and bred. It’s beautiful. It has it’s not so great areas, but so does everywhere else. But its beautiful parts are really, really beautiful. I’m proud to be from here.

There are a lot of towns, it’s a big county. Some are run down, some are really lovely.

DashboardConfessional · 14/01/2023 22:58

I love some bits, but I did move away and have never gone back, because 20 years in a village in West Yorkshire where everyone goes back 4 or 5 generations was enough. Mum and dad still live there though.

Shesquiteannoying · 14/01/2023 22:58

Is housing expensive, are people welcoming to people not from the area? I literally know nothing about the place..just that it looks stunning

YADNBU, I may or may not be biased though 😁

Is Harrogate the posher part as it were? I know a few people from there. Does it still have the beauty around it there?
Would a Greater Manchester/Cheshire person fit in there? 😂I’m guessing similarish humour

I’ve always found it quite grim. And I don’t just mean the cities/towns, but the parts of Yorkshire that are considered the areas of beauty. The moors just look so bleak and vast and desolate. I always think of that nuclear war BBC movie from the 80s (Threads) where the starving characters are scouring the moors harvesting what’s left of the crops in a nuclear Winter.

Well again, your Q is a bit “how long is a piece of string”. In some parts of Yorkshire, you could buy a 2-bed terrace for less than £100k. In others, you’d get nothing for less than 5x that. What type of house and what part of Yorkshire might be a start…

AtomicBlondeRose · 14/01/2023 23:02

Are houses expensive?

Barnsley or Beverley?
Richmond or Rochdale?
Hull or Halifax?

It’s a very big place!

Depends what part of Yorkshire you go to
It's huge, there's four counties.
North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Cheaper towns and cities in all of them, as well as expensive ones.

jaicobain · 14/01/2023 23:04

Though some of the towns are lovely! I’d love to live in Harrogate. Just that the moors aren’t for me, personally.

Essexexile · 14/01/2023 23:05

We’re Southerners who moved to our quiet, small market town in Yorkshire a few years ago and love it. We’re gradually getting around to visiting different areas but as has been already mentioned, Yorkshire is a big county. The North Yorkshire coast is stunning and we have beautiful countryside just a 10 minute drive from our house. We’ve been met with nothing but friendliness and we feel very much part of our local community.

Housing where we are is very reasonable, especially when compared to where we moved from, it’s all relative though. York, for example, is very expensive as are some of the pretty villages in and around the York moors and dales.

It’s a very big place!

Rochdale is in Greater Manchester and its historic county is Lancashire.

The nice parts 😬🤷🏻‍♀️

Sorry I’m crap, need to research a bit..!

Population estimates 2021

Yorkshire and the Humber 5,481,431
Scotland 5,479,900

As a couple of thoughtful posters have pointed out, it's quite big.
