Every time I watch Happy Valley, I want to live there.
I live abroad, but am originally from the North west, no idea why I never visited Yorkshire 🤷🏻‍♀️
Is it as lovely as it looks, people who live there/have visited?

Would I find a similar type place close to Manchester/Cheshire? I’m originally from near Stockport, don’t want to be too close to there though at all, want the countryside etc and small, village schools 💜

Marsden or Slaithwaite

Pembrokeshire is better...(Biased)

Nah. But lake district is prettier

Ramekin · 15/01/2023 09:43

So you want quite rural with rolling countryside, OP?

I don’t know the Calder Valley so well, but would recommend the Worth Valley for a similar feel. The area west of Bradford is massively underrated, imo, so houses are good value.
Bradford has an enduringly bad reputation, but most of the countryside around it is beautiful, and you don’t have such a flood risk as Todmorden or Hebden Bridge.
I would look around Oxenhope way if it were me.

romany4 · 15/01/2023 09:48

I live in a quiet West Yorkshire village. Semi rural. I love it.

Moved from the South East 30 years ago

Marsden or Slaithwaite

Either of these places is lovely.

Obviously though OP, rolling hills (as in the really impressive ones such as in the above photos) near beaches isn't how geography works. The Pennines are like a spine in the middle.

Is Harrogate the posher part as it were? I know a few people from there. Does it still have the beauty around it there?
Would a Greater Manchester/Cheshire person fit in there? 😂I’m guessing similarish humour

Harrogate is lovely, peaceful, and relatively quiet. However, house prices are high and traffic is heavy. I relocated, however, my job is still there, and the commute back and forth is hell.

Yorkshire towns are run down

Go for a visit

Hugely incorrect statement.

Green eyed monster.

I’m in Sheffield. Open country less than 5 minute walk away, Yet the city centre is just a 15 minute bus ride away. Find me anywhere else you can do that.

Mossley?

LlynTegid · 15/01/2023 09:58

Yorkshire is the largest county. It varies a great deal, a mix of beautiful places and towns, and then some deprived areas especially some former mining communities.

I am sure OP you could find a beautiful place to live there.

Dh has been to Whitby as a child? Nice?

Harrogate really needs a ring road.

Busy at weekends.

Nice scenery though and gorgeous coastline

No decent centres of employment though. Over an hour to York.

Even Hemsley isn't crime free.
This popped up on my Upday on my phone Inquest hears isolated Japanese family kept sister’s body at Yorkshire home

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/01/2023 10:09

Mossley? Is that a city? Isn’t it in Manchester somewhere?

purpledalmation · 15/01/2023 10:12

Seaside places are lovely. Whitby too big and touristy but lots of quiet villages everywhere

depends on your circumstances, if you have children once past gcse level it's very difficult for some pupils, having travel an very long way for college of 6 form depending on what subjects they'd like to take.

Whitby it's self is beautiful but a trek to anywhere bigger, it's also close to the moors rather then 'happy valley' type dales, and as seen on this thread The moors are more like marmite. some find the beautiful others find them desolate and oppressing.

Whitby can get ridiculously busy and hosts specialist weeks like Goth week, which again makes it really busy even in off peak season.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 15/01/2023 10:16

I’m also North Manchester, originally Rochdale. I love visiting Hebden Bridge and Saddleworth/greenfield/Moseley and would love to live there but in real terms it’s just not practical yet. Every time we drive past the house in the middle of the motorway it makes a little bit jealous too, I’d love to live there.

No, that's Moss Side, where you drive through very quickly with your windows up.

Beach?

The coast is lovely - and there are some lovely beaches.

Helmsley

North York Moors and not too far from the coast.

But it's not like Happy Valley

If you want rolling hills, Yorkshire and beach you really need to be in East Yorkshire as the wolds there are far more ‘rolling’ than N Yorks on the whole. Hockney spent lots of time painting there. The beaches are flatter though, and mainly deserted. And the North Sea can be pretty grim!

Pretty well any small town anywhere with a bus running into the centre.

bigknickersbigknockers · 15/01/2023 10:46

There are some beautiful places in Yorkshire but THE best bit about it is the road back to Lancashire😂Seriously though Hebden bridge is beautiful and has a lovely atmosphere as does Skipton.

StormzyWho · 15/01/2023 10:50

Do you need to take having to work for a living into account OP? Because discussing locations without knowing what you want based on Happy Valley scenery is pointless 🤣.

What do you actually need from a place to live?

I negotiated hybrid working in 2016 that allowed me to move back to Yorkshire with a day or two in London each week.

I moved to North Yorkshire because I could and it is nicer than where I grew up on the border of South/West Yorkshire imo. I have beautiful walks, views, great primary schools which feed into three great secondary schools (one a state grammar if that's what you want).

Fantastic healthcare - I can always see a GP on the day. Broadband is fast enough for me to work. Public transport is grim so a car is definitely required.

Things I like to do which I can do here - walking, eating - fabulous gastro pubs, arthouse cinema, yoga and swimming.

Obviously there isn't a huge amount of employment local to me with the hills covered in sheep.

But Sheffield is a big city.

This was my point! It’s not a small town.

Hanschenklein · 15/01/2023 11:07

We were looking at moving back over the pennines (born and bred in north Leeds).
We have a limited budget sadly - nearer £270k than £750k - and were struggling to find anything comparable. Anything in remotely desirable areas is just so expensive now.
