Yorkshire

Every time I watch Happy Valley, I want to live there.
I live abroad, but am originally from the North west, no idea why I never visited Yorkshire 🤷🏻‍♀️
Is it as lovely as it looks, people who live there/have visited?

I live in Yorkshire but 5 min drive from derbyshire so it's much nicer than derbyshire 😁

Ha! I'm a 5 minute drive from South Yorkshire (and I assume 10 minutes from you!)

RampantIvy · 14/01/2023 23:41

Are you in South Yorkshire by any chance @NormalNans? I think you might be near me. The area I live in has an image of being run down, (ex mining area) but 80% of the borough council area is actually rural.

It is. I’d be surprised if anyone who hasn’t lived here recognised that description because of the reputation of it.

mamabear715 · 15/01/2023 00:24

@Willyoujustbequiet born & bred in Yorks but did live in Northumberland for 13 years. Both beautiful places. :-)

I’ve always found it quite grim. And I don’t just mean the cities/towns, but the parts of Yorkshire that are considered the areas of beauty. The moors just look so bleak and vast and desolate. I always think of that nuclear war BBC movie from the 80s (Threads) where the starving characters are scouring the moors harvesting what’s left of the crops in a nuclear Winter.

Whereas I see rolling open space, great walks, and free fresh air all around. When the feather blooms it's glorious, and when it's dark and brooding it's huge and imposing. (And when it is gloomy there is the opportunity to swish around playing at Wuthering Heights)

TerfOnATrain · 15/01/2023 07:20

I live there, in Happy Valley land, although not in the actual Calder Valley, which is a specific area between Halifax and Todmorden. My home town has been mentioned a number of times across the three series and we’ve had filming there.

Yorkshire is massive and goes from cheap and deprived to rich and jaw droppingly beautiful. I recognise almost every single location well enough to know that where Catherine and Clare parked in Sheffield for the prison last week, was actually at the back of Pure Gym in Halifax and no where near Sheffield!

Happy Valley land is by no means the best or worst that Yorkshire has to offer. That said I’m happy living here.

First post in and we get God's own country.

I realise it's usually used in jest, but there's still an air of desperation about it.

Stealthfart · 15/01/2023 07:28

I live on the border of North and West Yorkshire, Happy Valley is West. North is generally much prettier, we have York, Harrogate, Helmsley etc, and The Dales. The West was the home of the Industrial Age so has been left with a lot of run down mill towns. Totally different. Although Ilkley is lovely and that’s in West Yorkshire.

I also live on the border with East Lancaster but we’d best not mention that (Ribble Valley excluded as it blends into North Yorkshire).

SallyWD · 15/01/2023 07:31

Moved here from the South. Love it!

Ridelikethewindypops · 15/01/2023 07:32

My " one that got away" was a Yorkshire man.
sigh
This thread just adds to the regret 🥺

Desperation? It's Yorkshire, not Slough.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/01/2023 07:36

I loved it and miss living there very deeply. ( I lived in both South and West Yorkshire - my eldest child was born in Barnsley)

I now live in the south west and for all their talk, they have no idea of community here. I describe myself as a "displaced northerner".

Yorkshire is special.

Did you fail to live in Yorkshire? Commiserations

DunjeeOn · 15/01/2023 07:41

I live in Yorkshire, it’s nice but not a patch on Northumberland. I’d live up there if I could afford it

Yorkshire towns are run down

Go for a visit

Tory Britain is run down (deliberately) - it is not confined to one county.

Cats23 · 15/01/2023 07:53

Pembrokeshire is better...(Biased)

autienotnaughty · 15/01/2023 07:59

A lot of Yorkshire towns/city's are rundown and have problems with anti social behaviour/crime. The little villages in the middle of green land are beautiful (except the ones that have built massive roads now in the middle of them) but you can't get a house in them for love nor money!!

ViscountessBridgerton · 15/01/2023 08:01

Southerner here relocated to Yorkshire and no intention of leaving 😄we love it. However as others have said house prices etc vary hugely. We live in the 'very busy touristy city' and the house prices have gone a bit crazy. We would struggle to get on the housing ladder if we were looking to buy now.

RampantIvy · 15/01/2023 08:04

A lot of towns everywhere are run down and have problems with anti social behaviour and crime. It isn't just a Yorkshire issue.

DH is from Northumberland, and I agree that it is equally as beautiful as Yorkshire.

I am an income and wouldn't go back to live in London. London is brilliant to visit, but not to live in.

Mustardcustardgrumblebellyandgravy · 15/01/2023 08:04

OP I watched season 1 this week and found myself looking at housing in Hebden Bridge afterwards! I have always thought of myself as a city person but it really appealed.
Beautiful photos pictured up thread.

Obbydoo · 15/01/2023 08:04

I think there's a very strong argument for Yorkshire being the best county in England. I can't think of another county that has all of these:

  • Beautiful coast.
  • Huge swathes of unspoilt rural areas (the Dales and North Yorks).
  • Often quoted best city in the country and major tourist attraction (York)
  • Sophisticated big city, great employment opportunities (Leeds).

Is there another county that ticks all of those boxes?

VeronicaVanHoopen · 15/01/2023 08:05

My husband is from Yorkshire. My cousins and aunt all also relocated to Harrogate at various points. There is some beautiful scenery but I don't think I have ever met so many small-minded bigots in my life as various people I have come across in my 25 years plus of various visits and stays. And God help you if you've got anything approaching a southern accent 😂The scenery can't make up for a generally supercilious attitude that seems to exist wherever we go in good old Yorkieshire! My husband definitely got out as soon as he could at 18...

Obviously this is personal experience and not indicative of all people that live there in the slightest. I am from south-east London which is roundly derided on here regularly for being dirty, unfriendly and downright dangerous but that's not my experience or perception at all. Different strokes for different folks I guess!

Galliano · 15/01/2023 08:07

I’m from Manchester and live in West Yorkshire. I’ve moved around a few times but tended to live in more expensive villages with other incomers/commuters. I think there are still some areas where being an incomer is unusual and possibly difficult to be accepted. However I’ve never felt unwelcome as a Manc and I think you’d be fine from that aspect. I love my hometown and half believe that on the sixth day God created Manchester, but there is no way I could go back to live in a Manchester suburb - I love my space and the country too much now. When I first came here the comparative lack of rain was also a plus but hard to remember that as it currently hasn’t stopped raining for days!

BabyFour2023 · 15/01/2023 08:10

Yorkshire is amazing! (And very large) there are nicer areas and not so nice areas, like everywhere. But overall, it is brilliant.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/01/2023 08:11

I'm a Londoner settled in W Yorkshire for 25 years. Both DC born just over the border in Barnsley, S Yorks. W Yorks May be dominated by the conurbations of Bradford/Leeds/Wakefield/Huddersfield/Halifax, but from my front door I'm surrounded countryside, farmland, woodland and moors. It could be closer to the sea, but otherwise I love it!

Not "a" county, no, (neither is Yorkshire), but I think you can compare the area of 3/4 counties where I now live. The South West has Bath as the tourist attraction, Bristol for employment, the Dorset coastline and some lovely countryside.
