Every time I watch Happy Valley, I want to live there.
I live abroad, but am originally from the North west, no idea why I never visited Yorkshire 🤷🏻‍♀️
Is it as lovely as it looks, people who live there/have visited?

I live in Derbyshire, it's much nicer.

Gotta disagree. I was brought up in Derbyshire but Yorkshire is God's own 😍

All the Welsh people I know use "God's Own Country" to describe Wales aswell.

Never heard that and I'm half Welsh!

Phos · 15/01/2023 09:05

Love how a show that shows it in such a horrendous light as Happy Valley makes you want to live here!

It's a massive county, has it's nice bits and not so nice bits. Examples of both are in Happy Valley. That is reflected in house prices. I wouldn't have thought anyone would be made unwelcome if they came to live here. I don't think that's the case anywhere though.

Shesquiteannoying · 15/01/2023 09:05

Would I find a similar type place close to Manchester/Cheshire? I’m originally from near Stockport, don’t want to be too close to there though at all, want the countryside etc and small, village schools 💜

I was born in West Yorkshire, but moved about 12 years ago down to Hertfordshire for Hubby's job (I also lived in Manchester which is also fab). I visit my family and friends regularly, but I don't think I could move back permanently. There are lots of deprived and run down areas (like anywhere I guess). However I'd certainly move to North Yorkshire, it's stunning.

The Hertfordshire countryside is lovely, but it pales in comparison to the rolling hills of Yorkshire!

I was raised in Herts and Cambs, awful place and couldn’t wait to get out. Just so bland in so many ways. I still have family there and even the ‘pretty’ villages feel unfriendly and superficial. I guess because a lot of it is commuter land for London. No real sense of community and Cambridge is picture perfect but with no real depth to it.

It always surprises me if people say they like it around that area.

Have you ever lived in Cornwall with a non West Country accent? 😂😬

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 15/01/2023 09:07

Or Disley/Chinley/Hayfield/Buxworth if you want more Cheshire

There's lots of pretty villages and small towns like Nantwich or Frodsham in Cheshire. But house prices are steep. I love Chester but so expensive and also traffic can be awful.

Which place is closest to the beach, but also has the rolling hills etc?
I’m seriously considering leaving my place of palm trees, sun & beaches to go to Happy valley land

Beach?

The coast is lovely - and there are some lovely beaches.

Helmsley

North York Moors and not too far from the coast.

But it's not like Happy Valley

Shesquiteannoying · 15/01/2023 09:10

@Lastqueenofscotland2 Would love Disley etc, but I think is pricey

I am lucky enough to be in beautiful countryside in East Lancs, 10 miles over the moors to Hebden.
I can see the North Yorks border on the top of a hill, marked by a pub, on the horizon.

Love it, people are friendly, there are so many lovely places within an hour to visit. There is nothing I would change.

Must admit, it's not my first choice of place to live at all. If it wasn't for my husbands job, we would still be in Manchester. I certainly agree with your comment about no real sense of community, I've been here for about 8 years now and I've only just made some friends.

I've lived in both Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, but wasn't brought up in either. I like both, but much prefer the people in Derbyshire, who in my experience are just... nicer.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 15/01/2023 09:18

Im from the Northwest and moved to Yorkshire (just outside York) 12 years ago.

Best thing I ever did.

Love it here.

Did you fail to live in Yorkshire? Commiserations

Green eyed monster.

I’m in Sheffield. Open country less than 5 minute walk away, Yet the city centre is just a 15 minute bus ride away. Find me anywhere else you can do that.

Exdpisatwat · 15/01/2023 09:19

I thought it was awash with drugs and Russian mafia! 🤣🤣

I met a gorgeous man from Yorkshire but the accent really put me off, he sounded like the Plusnet man. Love the accents in Happey Valley though.

I lived in Welwyn Garden City. I absolutely love that area (except Hatfield, bit of a dump)

Yorkshireadvisir · 15/01/2023 09:21

Love this area too. It is called Calder Valley. It has good people, good food and great landscapes. There are no beaches though, but rivers, canals and reservoirs.

Search within a mile or two of Sowerby Bridge. Here are some examples of the housing across the board...

Start by visiting the area. It's well worth it.

Hoppinggreen · 15/01/2023 09:22

I grew up in “Happy Valley” and it’s certainly got a bit more gentrified since then but there are still quite a few gritty bits.
I live not far away now and while our town is a bit crap our village is nice and it’s easy to access a lot of much better places
I like it here and of course the price of my house wouldn’t buy you much in a lot of other areas

PauliesWalnuts · 15/01/2023 09:24

I’m in North Manchester and a dyed in the wool Lancashire Lass but I have to admit that the Yorkshire countryside is beautiful. We walk and cycle in Calderdale most weekends and find it really friendly. Todmorden is in a valley so there’s not as much sunlight if you don’t live up a hill - there are a fair few properties in the shadow of the hills. I love the walk up to Stoodley Pike from Littleborough at any time of year - there’s definitely a vibe of “savage beauty” up there in the winter.

I’ve done a fair bit of cycling through the Yorkshire Dales which are unbelievably pretty - places like Grassington, Hawes etc. I’m very tempted to move up there but I’m on the edge of Manchester, half way between the city and the hills, and I think I’d find it hard to be that bit further out from things that are convenient at the moment.

Hoppinggreen · 15/01/2023 09:27

BabyFour2023 · 15/01/2023 08:13

Yes but it’s also the part of the country with the worst accent in the world 👀🙈😂

Liverpool would like a word with you

StormzyWho · 15/01/2023 09:27

I’m in North Yorks, grew up in South Yorks. Moved away for work for 25 years but came back eventually.

I live rurally in Nidderdale, an AONB. 30 miles from York. My work is based in London. I can get to the office once or twice a week in just over three hours with the drive.

Coast wise, my favourite Yorkshire beach is Runswick Bay. 60 miles from home.

Like anywhere there are good bits and bad bits.

My nearest local town is Harrogate which I don’t like at all, I prefer York and drive there for everything I need.

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2023 09:28

It’s nice to see a part of England looking good on a show. The camerawork is excellent all round but the green landscape shots look lovely.
