Every time I watch Happy Valley, I want to live there.
I live abroad, but am originally from the North west, no idea why I never visited Yorkshire 🤷🏻‍♀️
Is it as lovely as it looks, people who live there/have visited?

We're planning a move. OH works in Manchester, though mostly WFH, so we are trying to find the nicest place that is affordable with good schools on the Yorks/Lancs border. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Marsden or Slaithwaite, or even the top part of Linthwaite

SarahAndQuack · 15/01/2023 21:00

I like it. I agree, Yorkshire is big. We're 8 miles from York and moved because round here, a 3 bed house with a huge garden was 600pcm, which was less than half what we were paying for a small two bed with almost no garden in the South East. Go figure.

I will say, there are ways it feels insular. Where I am is very Tory - lots of 'poor Boris, he tried so hard,' and a tendency to assume being rich is normal. We are lesbian parents, and while it's better here in that we've never felt in danger and never been yelled at in the street, we do get quite a lot of anonymous/tacit prejudice. It's often well-meaning, but you do feel quite 'other'. Friends say it's the same if you're not white, or a single parent - it's just quite tricky to be in any way different from the affluent, white, married norm.

But, it's gorgeous countryside and affordable, so ...

This is the thing - for every Hebden Bridge, there's a Batley/Dewsbury/Brighouse.

What's wrong with Brighouse?

Deprivation. Field Lane was deemed one of the most deprived areas in the country. There's nothing "wrong" with it. It's just a comparison between the places with high house prices that look nice on the TV versus more typical towns.

Harrogate has got a huge county lines problem. It has been identified as the place in North Yorkshire hit hardest by heroin and crack cocaine gangs.

137 people arrested for drug related crimes in Harrogate in six months last summer.

Modern day local town issues.

Flumpaphone · 16/01/2023 06:48

I grew up in and around Calderdale/Calder Valley, I've moved away but my Mum still lives there.

It's like all places, parts are lovely parts are grotty. If you get the right parts then it is glorious. Halifax itself used to be a bit run down but I've seen an improvement recently. The top end of the Calder Valley is lovely but getting pricey (Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd). The Shibden Valley (where they filmed Gentleman Jack) is beautiful and a hidden gem in my opinion.

I haven't seen the latest series of Happy Valley but I think the first 2 were shot mostly around Sowerby Bridge and Elland, both are OK but I probably wouldn't live there.

The only thing I would say if you are moving from the South is that it is high up so expect it to be cold and it is a lazy wind (it goes through you not round you).

Oh and they are also shooting the new Marvel series in Halifax, apparently the Piece Hall is Nick Fury's new hang out.

RampantIvy · 16/01/2023 06:48

We have a county lines problem in the market town near us. We are close to the West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester borders.

EccentricElizabeth · 16/01/2023 07:44

It is part of life today in these market towns unfortunately @RampantIvy.

It affects everywhere, whether you were an old posh spa town or something else. The ‘never in Harrogate’ posts are bat shit.

I shall take a look! Thanks.

Ilkley, too.

Never good to idealise anywhere, but still, Yorkshire is God's Own Country and that is that.

Which God, apparently there are about 2000?

All of them 😉

I was born down south but have lived predominantly in the East Riding since I was 9 months old. Oddly I went to uni in Manchester and still consider that home, but in answer to your question about Cheshire folk fitting in, it depends on how Cheshire you are 😁

This might out me, but I obviously subconsciously have a thing for Cheshire blokes that I'm usually far too good for and was with the last one long distance for years. I watched open mouthed at the way his ex wife, her friends and even some of his friends behaved and I lost count of the times that I said 'if you behaved like that in Hull you'd just get your head kicked in....' and it's true. Have also had the same conversation with an ex from Altrincham who hates it and moved to Wetherby for the same reason and only last week with someone I got chatting with from Middlewich who's moved to Northumberland, and she also agreed 😂

You sound perfectly lovely OP but we don't do wannabes and pretension over this side o't'hills. However if you're perfectly normal you want Beverley, Helmsley or Malton.😉

That goes through Harrogate.

Coming from York to Skipton definitely involves going through Harrogate.
Not around Harrogate

You can go through Knaresborough too but it takes the same amount of time with just as much traffic.

They're not bat shit.
Jennyfields isn't inner city London.
Dp thinks Harrogate is twee compared to inner cities.

EccentricElizabeth · 16/01/2023 18:10

No one is comparing Harrogate to inner London though are they? Apart from you.
