Every time I watch Happy Valley, I want to live there.
I live abroad, but am originally from the North west, no idea why I never visited Yorkshire 🤷🏻‍♀️
Is it as lovely as it looks, people who live there/have visited?

Yorkshire:God's own county. Also Rochdale is over the pennines not in Yorkshire although probably wishes it was. 🤣🤔😏

Beetlebum1981 · 14/01/2023 23:09

As others have said, Yorkshire's big! I grew up in North Yorkshire which was very rural! York's lovely but very touristy & over-priced. I loved living in Halifax, we were near a couple of great pubs which always helps, and the town centre seems to be slowly improving. I loved that I was close to places like Hebden Bridge. I'm now in Holmfirth, lovely scenery, great for walking & some good pubs however if I want decent food/drinks I head to Manchester.

We’re Southerners who moved to our quiet, small market town in Yorkshire a few years ago and love it. We’re gradually getting around to visiting different areas but as has been already mentioned, Yorkshire is a big county. The North Yorkshire coast is stunning and we have beautiful countryside just a 10 minute drive from our house. We’ve been met with nothing but friendliness and we feel very much part of our local community.

Housing where we are is very reasonable, especially when compared to where we moved from, it’s all relative though. York, for example, is very expensive as are some of the pretty villages in and around the York moors and dales.

Yorkshire is a big county
I'm going to have to correct this, sorry 😁
Yorkshire isn't one county, it's actually four.

DashboardConfessional · 14/01/2023 23:10

The nice parts are expensive for the North, yes. A friend has just paid £700k for a 4 bed new build in Harrogate. If it's leafy and green with some posh teashops, you pay accordingly.

But housing stock varies enormously. I'm from a village in the Colne Valley (if anyone watched Where The Heart Is in the 90s!) where you can get a very "Yorkshire" 2 bed stone cottage for about £120k. Next valley over it's more than twice that.

flumposie · 14/01/2023 23:11

Born in Bradford (West Yorkshire) , in laws from Doncaster ( South Yorkshire), lived in Harrogate ( North Yorkshire) for 21 years! They are very different. Harrogate is expensive housing wise, but I can't see me leaving here.

GodisaBC · 14/01/2023 23:12

Hebden Bridge is beautiful, that’s where the sisters live!
I visit as much as I can. Fab little town with loads of coffee shops.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 14/01/2023 23:13

Yorkshire is massive OP! House prices vary hugely, there's good bits and bad bits.

AtomicBlondeRose · 14/01/2023 23:02

Are houses expensive?

Barnsley or Beverley?
Richmond or Rochdale?
Hull or Halifax?

It’s a very big place!

Is there another Rochdale in Yorkshire?

AtomicBlondeRose · 14/01/2023 23:18

I live right over the other side so a bit hazy on where the Yorkshire/Lancashire border is! And if in doubt assume Yorkshire! I was just going for alliteration, but the point still stands.

flumposie · 14/01/2023 23:18

I'll add that as lovely as Harrogate is, there are still issues you'd find anywhere...we had a terrible year last year with a house opposite us. Notorious drug dealer, made our lives miserable for a year. Thankfully gone now,but no doubt inflicting misery in another part of the town.

RampantIvy · 14/01/2023 23:22

Yes. As others have said, parts are pretty grim - the rougher parts of Leeds and Bradford for example, but the scenery on Happy Valley is very typical of the area. Here are some photos I took near Holmfirth (Sheveling Vineyard)

I live in Derbyshire, it's much nicer.

I live in Yorkshire but 5 min drive from derbyshire so it's much nicer than derbyshire 😁

Shesquiteannoying · 14/01/2023 23:01

Is Harrogate the posher part as it were? I know a few people from there. Does it still have the beauty around it there?
Would a Greater Manchester/Cheshire person fit in there? 😂I’m guessing similarish humour

It's Tory land

youshouldnthaveasked · 14/01/2023 23:30

It’s beautiful. I love the North Yorkshire villages

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 14/01/2023 23:31

My bit of Yorkshire is beautiful. I will stay here until I die.

tobee · 14/01/2023 23:31

What I liked about series 1 of Happy Valley was that it wasn't romanticised.

I'm totally south east, Home Counties, Greater London born, bred and living. However, I have a Yorkshire surname, I love it there. And feel at home. Although, weirdly, love to live where I do at the same time.

Mydogatemypurse · 14/01/2023 23:32

Yorkshire is the most beautiful county, North Yorkshire is the best.

PriamFarrl · 14/01/2023 23:35

As a very southern child I always wanted to live in Yorkshire. And I did for a short time. I was made very welcome and loved every minute.

Runningoncoffeealone · 14/01/2023 23:35

I'm from West Yorkshire, lived here all my life, so my opinion is pretty biased. However, my OH moved in with me from down south and she's always said it was one of the best decisions she's ever made. Her only downside is that our chippy's don't sell Saveloys (at least the part we live in doesn't)😁

Towcester · 14/01/2023 23:36

Sure, some beautiful places but the lake district is not so far away and more spectacular imo. Then for small towns and villages Derbyshire and Lancashire have similar scenery and nice towns without the fuss. Bakewell, Buxton, Matlock in Derbyshire or Ribble Valley in Lancs.

What I would say though is that those two counties don't have nice bigger towns like York or Harrogate.

As an Italiaphile I would say Yorkshire is the Tuscany which has the jewels of Florence and Siena that the tourists flock to whilst Lancashire is Umbria next door which is almost the same but gets bypassed by many tourists and doesn't have that 'must see' town.

NormalNans · 14/01/2023 23:37

I live in one of the cheaper areas in Yorkshire and it’s great. People are down to earth and genuine, house prices are reasonable, development happening in the town and within 5-10 mins you’re in gorgeous countryside, within half an hour you’re in a big city with a wide range of theatres, universities, love music venues, art galleries and a huge range of places to eat. But there’s a huge amount of snobbery about it because historically it was a run down mining town.

I’ve lived all over the country and have never lived anywhere that feels so genuine, I can’t think of a better word to describe it. (I do agree about the North York Moors though, very bleak)

PizzaPizza56 · 14/01/2023 23:38

Harrogate here too. The 3 bed semis on my street without driveways are going for £450k - £500k. And the 2 bed terraces round the corner are going for £350k. Crazy.

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/01/2023 23:39

There are some very beautiful parts but in general its overrated as a whole. I say that as someone fairly local from God's own actual country Northumberland!

RampantIvy · 14/01/2023 23:41

Are you in South Yorkshire by any chance @NormalNans? I think you might be near me. The area I live in has an image of being run down, (ex mining area) but 80% of the borough council area is actually rural.
