Every time I watch Happy Valley, I want to live there.
I live abroad, but am originally from the North west, no idea why I never visited Yorkshire 🤷🏻‍♀️
Is it as lovely as it looks, people who live there/have visited?

Yorkshire towns are run down

Go for a visit

What, ALL of them? Many are fabulous.

I bet you live near me - I'm in Barnsley 😂

🤫😉

StrawberryWater · 15/01/2023 16:18

Love Yorkshire!

York itself is fab but the area around Helmsley is so nice (not far from Castle Howard and Rieveux Abbey and only an hour away from Whitby etc). So much to see and do.

Currently living in Lancashire and the two sides of the Pennines could not be more different.

I live in the expensive shit hole that is south east. This all looks so appealing.

I am a soft southerner who went to live in Yorkshire and I adore the place. It's where my heart is.

It seems like there are a few of us here.
This isn't a chocolate box picture. It's where I live. I took this picture about 3 hours ago.

Harrogate is hardly gangster ville.

😂 Harrogate, the new Bransholme 😆

Hanschenklein · 15/01/2023 16:53

@RampantIvy I guess you had decent budget ?

RampantIvy · 15/01/2023 16:56

That field is a few hundred yards from my house. I don't own it. It is just typical of the rural landscape here - not a chocolate box image.

Hanschenklein · 15/01/2023 16:56

@SchoolTripDrama well no it's not grim in Harrogate of Knaresborough but some of us cannot afford £400k for a 2 bed terrace🙄.

Same where I live, I’m in a village just outside of York and we are surrounded by fields and lovely scenery. I pay £650 pcm for my 3 bedroom detached house with a large garden, private rented. Regular bus service into York, short walk to the local shop and post office.

I fell in love with Yorkshire a few years ago when we went for the weekend. Go back as much as possible. It's a huge area so visiting different places each time. The thing I found that surprised me, which might sound awful and maybe not a general rule of thumb was how amazingly friendly people are. We always visited Cornwall or south coast for years on end but I felt a real affinity with Yorkshire as soon as we got there. Maybe through rosy glow of holiday glasses but I really love the place x

I live in Derbyshire, it's much nicer.

Yes, this! It's like Yorkshire 2.0. I'm not from either place so not biased, just always surprised at how much Yorkshire gets mentioned when Derbyshire is so much more picturesque.

DFSsale · 15/01/2023 17:11

I live in Happy Valley land, so far I’ve spotted scenes filmed in Sowerby Bridge, Ripponden, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Halifax.
We are lucky as we are between Leeds and Manchester, have beautiful scenery on our doorsteps but the downside to these lovely Pennines hills is brutal winter weather, traffic is squashed into valley roads (the Burnley Road into Hebden is awful) and the public transport is pretty shit.
Everyone drives unless they are lucky to be near a train station, the M62 is heaving as it’s quick to drive than take public transport to Leeds or Manchester.

Surprised by that rent - York itself has horrendous rents so would have thought the commuter belt outside York was also high.

Nothing short of £1000 for 3 bed houses in a 5 mile range of York. Go a bit further and its cheaper

Has Derbyshire got a coast line?

The Peaks are nice though,

WillowKnicks · 15/01/2023 17:37

Not sure if someone else has said by Happy Valley is filmed in & around Halifax in West Yorkshire.

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 15/01/2023 17:40

Love Yorkshire the Dales especially had some fantastic holidays there and would love to live in the Dales. I’m a proper Yorkshire lass was born in South Yorkshire, lived in North and East Yorkshire and worked in West Yorkshire. So I might be a bit biased!

Yorkshireadvisir · 15/01/2023 19:11

If you are really looking to live in happy valley what about this as an option. Get yourself a boat on the canal....

If you are a liberal, free spirited type this canal is for you. £70k for your new abode and you can eat like a king in this valley with a normal salary

This is the thing - for every Hebden Bridge, there's a Batley/Dewsbury/Brighouse.

I love Yorkshire. Can’t understand why anyone would want to live somewhere as unfriendly and over populated as that there London. Fk that for a game of soldiers. Give me the rolling green hills, beautiful coastline and friendly folks of Yorkshire any day 😊

DFSsale · 15/01/2023 19:54

Oooh no! Brighouse is a great little town. A proper town centre with good transport links. I love it!

We're planning a move. OH works in Manchester, though mostly WFH, so we are trying to find the nicest place that is affordable with good schools on the Yorks/Lancs border. Any suggestions gratefully received!
