Inspired by another thread … I was surprised by the level of atheism professed … as I always though I was in a tiny, tiny minority.
would be interested to see the MN response.

IABU - there is a god
IANBU - there is no god

Why does it make you sad? Genuinely curious. Do you believe that atheists will go to hell (assuming you believe in that)?

Well, to be fair, I'm an atheist and, I agree, it is a little sad. I'd much rather believe that I could pray and nudge the odds in my favour, and that I will meet up with the people who have died and that, say, the son of God thought we were all super special and worth dying for. I mean, who wouldn't want a bit of that in their life? But no, I don't believe, it's just how it is.

Rollin · 02/01/2023 19:50

@38woman
good for you, people believe all sorts to get them through life, but you don’t need to feel sorry for the rest of us. Keep your faith to yourself and don’t try to inflict it on anyone else and it’ll all be fine.

EngTech · 02/01/2023 19:50

I am just waiting for the bolt of lightning from on high for my ungodly behaviours 👍

SpacePotato · 02/01/2023 19:10

To me religion is just a method of control.
Usually men controlling women.

I can understand why people find comfort in their faith but it's not for me.

I agree with this.

The collapse of our predecessor universe.

And that theory has as much to support it as the theory that God did it. But if that’s your belief then, unlike many people on this thread, I’d respect that.

MayThe4th · 02/01/2023 19:50

this thread is so incredibly offensive. And by far the most offensive people on it are atheists. And I am one, but I wouldn’t want to be associated with any of the atheists hurling the kind of vitriol that they are on this thread.

There’s a saying…. One doth protest too much…. ;)

Jada1234 · 02/01/2023 19:52

I believe in God my children do also. I’m proud to be a believer will always be no matter what any worldly people say

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/01/2023 19:52

But if there's no God does that mean there's no Tooth Fairy either? 😱

... I daren't even think about Father Christmas 😱😱

At least no God means no Devil.
😱

maddiemookins16mum · 02/01/2023 19:52

I believe there is. I see God working everyday through the Church I attend.

Squirrelblanket · 02/01/2023 19:52

I don't believe in God and never have. I judge anyone who does. Sorry, but it's true.

Rollin · 02/01/2023 19:52

‘suspect that the vast majority of people in Britain think that there might be something more than what we experience in our day to day lives -’

sure, but that’s not a patriarchal organisation that puts men at the top of the tree, makes women subservient, and tries to Control people through fear.

TeaAndToastest · 02/01/2023 19:53

I dislike both unthinking or judgemental religious people and the sort of aggressive empty-vessel atheists who say things like “magic sky man” or whatever. I have Christian friends who are highly intelligent, extremely well-educated and have a conception of God which bears no relation to this silly mockery. I don’t share their beliefs but equally I wouldn’t ridicule them.

I suspect some atheists decide they don’t believe when they’re a small child and never think about it beyond that, so their conception of God and religion is that of a small child. There is an arrogance and lack of curiosity to it that is deeply depressing.

I can understand your perspective, but then would it be offensive to say that as all religions are written by human's, edited by human's, translated by human's ect it seems that why should humans bow or worship some mythical being?

Wow how arrogant I'm not informed enough to be debating existence of God, if you are a 'literal' scientist then prove it onus of evidence is on you.

Let's make shit up is what you are going with as a scientist.

During lockdown, my partner and I discussed our faith, we were both brought up Christian. 1 c of e, 1 catholic. Eventually we decided that what suited us best was Apathism. I was going to set up a website for it. But couldn't be bothered.

🤣

You had my post deleted?! I said nothing at all against any guidelines!! I’m an agnostic!! You don’t even know what that means because you’ve repeatedly talked about my imaginary religion.

Whydidimarrythis · 02/01/2023 19:56

@mnhq can my post be reinstated? I didn’t break any guidelines at all and I was the one they were being rude to!!

BrownEyedGhoul · 02/01/2023 19:42

Um, no.

If tell you that there is a giant 7 legged furry monster tht lives under myu bed, but its invisible so I can't show you, you don't agree that there's no proof either way and we are equallyg likely to eb correct, do you? Am I just as likely to be right that there is one there that you are likely to eb right there isn't?

Personally, I would agree with you. Wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of you (or the 7 legged monster).

Rollin · 02/01/2023 19:57

I don’t get why believers are so upset at the rest of us. You win, don’t you? You get to go and live in the clouds with the man with the big white beard and the rest of us are stuffed. Isn’t that it?

x2boys · 02/01/2023 19:58

ILoveeCakes · 02/01/2023 19:47

You can't link all these things together. You really can't. To do so is to commit all manner of logical fallacies. eg appeal to authority.

Every thing a person stands for needs to be considered on it's own merits. If your argument is limited to "Well, my uncle was a doctor so all his opinions must be correct" then I don't know what to say to you.

That's not what I said tho was is it ?
I was replying to a previous posts who said people with a faith were lacking in critical thinking ,I didn't particularly agree with my uncle's beliefs or disagree for that matter I was pointing out that people with a faith can still have critical thinking skills.

It's not my 'belief', it's a part of big bang theory. It adequately answers the 'but what caused the 'big bang?' question often asked by sceptics, and it appears to fit with what we understand about how stars collapse, the nature of black holes and so on.

The fact it fits with our understanding of the nature of the universe already lends it much more credence as a theory than 'god did it', because it does not throw up all sorts of contradictory and irreconcilable problems.

It's no more a 'belief' than 'believing' in gravity, or that falling in water gets you wet.

CovertImage · 02/01/2023 19:58

Mumsnet attracts, typically, a more educated demographic who have been taught to think critically

That is absolutely untrue and is complete and total bollocks.
