There is no god

Inspired by another thread … I was surprised by the level of atheism professed … as I always though I was in a tiny, tiny minority.
would be interested to see the MN response.

IABU - there is a god
IANBU - there is no god

IANBU

And to add to that, religion should not be protected from criticism or ridicule

Reluctantadult · 02/01/2023 19:03

I've gone the other way, I've been surprised how many people believe in God. I suppose I lived more in my own bubble when I was younger.

Stressedmum2017 · 02/01/2023 19:04

If there is a god he/she is one sick fuck.

IveHadEnoughNowFfs · 02/01/2023 19:07

Stephen Fry says it all, this video changed the way I see the concept of God.

Againstmachine · 02/01/2023 19:07

If God exists they are a sick fuck look at old testament he loved a bit of genocide.

I never understand the fee will arguement, as if they exist and won't do nothing there is zero point in praying to them.

NuffSaidSam · 02/01/2023 19:08

I don't think there's a god.

I'm surprised that you think atheists are a tiny minority though. I think in the last census 37% identified as having no religion (which I know isn't exactly the same as being an atheist, but gives a good indication).

IveHadEnoughNowFfs · 02/01/2023 19:08

Sorry, don’t think the link is working. Google Stephen Fry interview on God.

MajorCarolDanvers · 02/01/2023 19:09

No god.

Hadn't atheism risen to about 50% of the population now?

AnyOldThings · 02/01/2023 19:09

I don’t believe there is a God in the sense of the Bible. I do believe there is far more to this life than we know yet and that there is some type of intelligence at the core of it (although probably not something our current human minds can even comprehend).

So I don’t believe in God… but I suppose the easiest way to put it is that I believe in the ‘energy’ of the universe as it were. Hard to describe but probably puts me in the Atheist/Agnostic camp.

HisNameWasMike · 02/01/2023 19:09

Of course there isn't a god. I'm amazed rational people still believe these tales from the dark ages but they do!

bestchristmasever · 02/01/2023 19:09

Can't vote as am on app.

There is no god.

SpacePotato · 02/01/2023 19:10

To me religion is just a method of control.
Usually men controlling women.

I can understand why people find comfort in their faith but it's not for me.

Lincslady53 · 02/01/2023 19:11

During lockdown, my partner and I discussed our faith, we were both brought up Christian. 1 c of e, 1 catholic. Eventually we decided that what suited us best was Apathism. I was going to set up a website for it. But couldn't be bothered.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/01/2023 19:11

YANBU.

A substantial proportion of the population doesn't believe in god, and even more aren't religious.

PeekAtYou · 02/01/2023 19:11

I thought that atheism was niche because of the amount of Christianity in my education but as an adult I meet far more atheists and agnostics than religious people.

iamthesparrow · 02/01/2023 19:11

Stressedmum2017 · 02/01/2023 19:04

This exactly.

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 02/01/2023 19:12

It's a shame you can't have a threeway split for:

There definitely is a god
There definitely isnt a god
There might be, but there's no way to be sure/organised religion might well be bad but that's not the same as saying no gods are real/I believe it's possible that there's SOMETHING, etc

You know, generalised agnosticism.

Biscuitsneeded · 02/01/2023 19:12

Mumsnet attracts, typically, a more educated demographic who have been taught to think critically. So while the 88% atheist statistic I have just been shown does seem high, bear in mind that won't be typical of the population as a whole.

PS Of course there's no god. Or God. But fairy stories were very good for keeping the populace where you wanted them.

No, no it hasn’t.

Grin I started using the word 'apatheist' on mn threads a few years ago, I'd never come across it and thought I'd invented it - but didn't mind finding out the concept already existed.
RobertaFirmino · 02/01/2023 19:15

Any self respecting Alan Partridge fan knows that God is a gas.

This is just pure prejudice. The atheists I know are all highly educated.

And it’s not a sign of critical thinking to tell yourself that people with different opinions from you are just a bit thick.

Durango · 02/01/2023 19:16

Im genuinely blown away when intelligent rational people admit to believing in god

For me it’s on par with believing in Santa, “be good and you’ll get something at the end”

Show me a religion whose roots aren’t based on women being treated like second class citizens ….

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2023 19:16

I'm an atheist. I don't make a big song and dance about it. I'm not unusual in my family or friendship circle though.
