There is no god

Inspired by another thread … I was surprised by the level of atheism professed … as I always though I was in a tiny, tiny minority.
would be interested to see the MN response.

One of the common themes that I find is that an argument for the existence of god is that the universe is so fantastic, that it could only be some kind of divine creation. Wheras I don’t think it’s that impressive at all. It mainly consists of nothing, for a start.

I think the reason some people think the universe is so awesome (in both the actual and popular sense) is the same reason that people will often answer ‘The brain’ when asked what’s the most important organ in the body, completely disregarding it was the brain that just thought that. It’s purely down to bias and self interest, just like at every school play, each mother knows their child was the best actor/singer/giraffe if the 30 kids involved. And we think things are more impressive than they are, because of our limited sense of scale/perspective and our tiny minds.

For me, the universe is the proof that god doesn’t exist, because if they did, I’d expect it would be far more impressive. And if they do exist but can’t do better, well then, god not as absolutely bloody marvellous as those who follow him think and revere them to be.

I dislike both unthinking or judgemental religious people and the sort of aggressive empty-vessel atheists who say things like “magic sky man” or whatever. I have Christian friends who are highly intelligent, extremely well-educated and have a conception of God which bears no relation to this silly mockery. I don’t share their beliefs but equally I wouldn’t ridicule them.

I suspect some atheists decide they don’t believe when they’re a small child and never think about it beyond that, so their conception of God and religion is that of a small child. There is an arrogance and lack of curiosity to it that is deeply depressing.

I quite agree with post and I'm an atheist

I wasn’t the poster who used the word stupid, actually. If MN reinstate my post then you’ll see that. I said “uninformed” in response to someone saying that agnostics believe in god.

I dont know if there’s a god. I don’t think there’s one in the sense of a person-like entity, but I think it’s possible there’s a power for goodness/ creativity that could be called “god”.

I don’t believe there is a God in the sense of the Bible. I do believe there is far more to this life than we know yet and that there is some type of intelligence at the core of it (although probably not something our current human minds can even comprehend).

So I don’t believe in God… but I suppose the easiest way to put it is that I believe in the ‘energy’ of the universe as it were. Hard to describe but probably puts me in the Atheist/Agnostic camp.

this thread is so incredibly offensive. And by far the most offensive people on it are atheists. And I am one, but I wouldn’t want to be associated with any of the atheists hurling the kind of vitriol that they are on this thread.

There’s a saying…. One doth protest too much…. ;)

Imagine you have been persecuted got years from the religious ot you might understand why people are angry, people got killed for not adhereing to religious beliefs.

I believe in God in the same way that I believe that the sun will rise in the morning. I have seen his power at work in my life and in the life of my friends. I believe that one day I will die and will be with him forever.
I have seen the good that Christians have done, from running night shelters for the homeless, to food banks, to providing a place where those on the edges of society can be accepted and loved, regardless of what they believe.
I feel incredibly fortunate to know God, and be known by him. It is a peace like no other.
And I have a degree and everything!!

I've been both a believer and an atheist and I can't quite get atheism to work for me, so I've gone back to giving belief a go. Christianity teaches you how to be tolerant, kind, humble, grateful for what you have and to not judge others. I'm hopeless at it, but I keep trying 😂

The latest research from the Shroud of Turin is very intriguing as well so I certainly think something miraculous happened 2000 years ago and has inspired generations of people and the Saints ever since. There's worse things to believe in I guess.

I said some atheists in general are smug and arrogant, I didn’t refer to any particular poster or call anyone out. I didn’t say “clever” either, I said “uninformed”, as I said, in response to them saying that agnostics believe in God. I stand by it.

The bottom line is, al! Books and information that explain these various religions are all.created by humans, there fore humans cannot be trusted so anything we think we know about God or even if such a being existed seems very much a stretch at best
