There is no god

Inspired by another thread … I was surprised by the level of atheism professed … as I always though I was in a tiny, tiny minority.
would be interested to see the MN response.

IABU - there is a god
IANBU - there is no god

Nope but just because I can't prove something I don't make some outlandish story to try to.

That’s your choice - it doesn’t make you in any way superior and it doesn’t negate my point. You seem to be failing to recognise that it’s exactly what you’ve done. You’ve said that the universe was created by “not god”, but we know the universe exists so you’re saying it came from something other than god. You’re still inventing a theory with no proof - it’s just a vague theory.

Againstmachine · 02/01/2023 19:41

ILoveeCakes · 02/01/2023 19:40

I don't care about what you believe. I want to know what you can prove.

Unfortunately as this thread proves they will come up with some rubbish why they can't prove what they say.

BrownEyedGhoul · 02/01/2023 19:42

Whydidimarrythis · 02/01/2023 19:39

Yes. It is just as acceptable for someone with no proof to make up anything. There’s just as much proof that they’re right as there is that you’re right. You’re just as likely to be wrong. People are entitled to make up literally any theory they like and it’s baffling how upset atheists get about that fact.

Um, no.

If tell you that there is a giant 7 legged furry monster tht lives under myu bed, but its invisible so I can't show you, you don't agree that there's no proof either way and we are equallyg likely to eb correct, do you? Am I just as likely to be right that there is one there that you are likely to eb right there isn't?

Hawkins001 · 02/01/2023 19:42

I do consider the Freemasonry concept of a divine being, as a reasonable consideration.

But when it comes to all human religions, it seems as they are all written and translated by human's then I don't trust any of them

I'm not sure how you've arrived at the point whereby you can claim 'atheists have no clue what the answer is'.

Most atheists are comfortable with big bang hypotheses, because they are science based, they fit with the observable reality of the universe, and more importantly, they are being validated by new discoveries so it appears that the more we find out, the more the universe is confirming for us that these ideas appear to be reasonably cogent.

The rational, logical and scientific answer is that we don’t know.

There are several observable aspects to the universe that are a direct result of it's origin and creation. It's perfectly 'rational, logical, and scientific' to reverse engineer these, hence why science is able to form working hypotheses from them.

If you want to understand why atheists often come across as smug, condescending, or patronising, it's because of the point you mention yourself -

At least religious people (in general) accept that their believe isn’t based on any evidence

So in essence, 'faith' in creator beings, deities and so on, appears no less ridiculous than grown adults believing in fairies, santa claus, or the 'bogeyman' under your bed, and yet people who point out how nonsensical this is are accused of being 'smug'?

Perhaps if people do not want to be ridiculed, they could try not being ridiculous.

You men the big bang a theory with more scientists in agreement than your religious bollocks.

I’m an atheist to the core and I’ve been really shocked in the past by suddenly discovering normal, seemingly intelligent people that I’ve known for a while are staunch Christians. I can’t fathom how anyone in this day and age can believe in the biblical magic sky man. I can understand a belief in ‘something greater’ but anyone who take the bible as fact instantly loses my respect!

Im also continually dismayed by my kids being taught that the bible is fact in school/ nursery. My 4 yo came home from nursery telling me that Jesus was the most important person in the world, they learned all about it from the nativity!

AmadeustheAlpaca · 02/01/2023 19:43

Some very smart people are religious and scientific; both James Clerk Maxwell and Georges Lemaitre were both ground breaking scientists and very religious. The Mumsnet argument that only thick people are religious isn’t substantiated and is also insulting to many believers of both Christianity and other religions. I suspect that the vast majority of people in Britain think that there might be something more than what we experience in our day to day lives - especially when someone they know dies - but don’t think too hard about it.

Akite · 02/01/2023 19:43

Thought you were referring to Frank Turner's brilliant atheistic hymn

God was what people made up to plug the gaps in their knowledge. Now we know we have gaps in our knowledge and science will probably answer them eventually. We don't need to make up stuff to explain eg, why the sun rises and sets, why seasons exist, eclipses, stars. We have researched and answered those questions, that's how knowledge progresses. Why were the Roman gods who controlled things like that wrong but the Christian god who controls people is right? It's a bonkers idea if you stop to think about it. Why on Earth would an all-powerful being be in the slightest bit interested in humans?
Atheists don't claim to have answers to everything, but that's ok, we don't need to have an answer.

This thread has made me so sad.

Faith and prayer has carried me through so much.

@Creepinglight That's what I'm saying! The propensity to believe in any sort of God declines in accordance with the level of education.

I'm not saying believers are thick. I'm saying that for one reason or another they haven't engaged their critical faculties. I know some lovely religious people. And i know sone absolute tossers who should be embarrassed to represent the faith they profess to follow. Intelligence isn't relevant, but education is.

That's quite an arrogant way of thinking ,my uncle had a very strong faith he died a few months ago ,he was a GP.for many years and was an extremely iintelligent man ,I don't think.he could e accused of lacking in critical thinking given his longstanding medical career ,you don't have Do agree with such beliefs but don't write people off who.have a faith as stupid .

Whydidimarrythis · 02/01/2023 19:44

BrownEyedGhoul · 02/01/2023 19:40

No, but all the other things we have zero proof of either way we tend to stick very much to the not true unless you prove it true method. Why is religion on an easier standard?

That’s not true. That’s not what science does at all. Science says “I don’t know” when they don’t know. Atheism is claiming to know it’s, very specifically, not god. That’s not what science does.

HitMeWithAHotNoteAndWatchMeBounce · 02/01/2023 19:45

I can’t vote either way because I don’t know.

Nobody knows.

I don’t think there is a God. Or at least, I don’t think it’s the God that many believers seem to have thrown their lot in with.

But there is too much I can’t explain - how the world, and all of us in it, came into existence in the first place, for one.

Nobody knows. Nobody can say definitively one way or the other. Not even Mumsnet randoms.

If they could, we’d all have the answer, and we’d all agree.

Why does it make you sad? Genuinely curious. Do you believe that atheists will go to hell (assuming you believe in that)?

Againstmachine · 02/01/2023 19:46

But we are this far through thread how do the religious justify genocide by their god.

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 02/01/2023 19:46

Fairly scientifically impossible for there to be a god of any description but I think religion and religious followings are borne out of fear.

It's like politics isn't it peop!e have different views ,just because your an atheist doesn't mean that those who have a faith are wrong and vice versa

Rollin · 02/01/2023 19:47

‘This is a deliberately goady thread. Why would anyone with a faith want to come on here and admit that faith to posters who will happily accuse the of being uneducated and believing in fairy stories?’

it’s not goady at all. It’s a fair question given the power that religion has over our politics and lives.
If you are a believer, all you have to say is yes - you don’t have to into detail, and this is an anonymous forum.
So what loss?

You can't link all these things together. You really can't. To do so is to commit all manner of logical fallacies. eg appeal to authority.

Every thing a person stands for needs to be considered on it's own merits. If your argument is limited to "Well, my uncle was a doctor so all his opinions must be correct" then I don't know what to say to you.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 02/01/2023 19:48

Agnostic here, because I’m simply a tiny termite crawling about for a brief period of time on a round, rocky thing with a liquid iron core in a seemingly infinite universe which we still know very little about and I don’t have a fucking clue what’s going on.

I've gone the other way, I've been surprised how many people believe in God. I suppose I lived more in my own bubble when I was younger.

Same here!
