Really can't face work tomorrow

boxingdayisbest · 02/01/2023 11:25

I know I'm being unreasonable I suppose (as I'm sure thousands of others feel the same) but I go back to work tomorrow and have a lurching feeling in my stomach every time I think about it. I just don't want to face it.

Before Christmas it was very high pressure and stressful and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. I've been in a new job since June last year (2022) with a company I've been at a few years but it hasn't panned out as advertised at all. My direct line manager is the same (and a good guy) but we've been moved to another team and management above him are all different. They are archaic in behaviour and stuck in the 90s, no appreciation of work/life balance, never any acknowledgment of hard work and don't appear to even value our function.

I get paid very well and work from home though (which due to kids and health I value deeply). There is now little chance of progression further.

I feel very stuck and don't want to face it! I feel a bit like my kids not wanting to go back to school but know I really just need to get a grip! Leaving isn't an easy option either as it won't be simple to get something else that pays enough and largely let's me work remotely.

Anyone else feeling similar today and want to get through tomorrow together?

How does working from home help with your kids health issues?
Are you dealing with sick kids when you are being paid to work?
Is this causing you to be less productive than you ought to be hence the stress?
because that’s what I’m reading.

You sound quite combative.

I read that post as kids and health in terms of them being separate concerns.

And even if you are correct, working from home would obviously be more beneficial if you did have a child with a health condition. If the employer offers flexibility at least in that circumstance OP can nip out and collect said child if they were unwell more easily, and work around various health appointments much more seamlessly than if they were in a typical job.

Regardless, the PP doesn’t need to answer to you and you don’t need to be so cheeky when asking questions. You’ve assumed a lot of details which aren’t written there.

I don’t work from home but the new WFM movement has been going on for several years now, I’m sure those who do WFM are aware they should be working during their agreed working hours and not looking after a sick child. It’s common sense.

Your choices are to do the job you are being paid for to the best of your ability or find another job.
I am surprised at the number of people posting that they hate their well-paid job, WFH and don't want to do it.
Look for something else.
It's not fair to employers that they pay people who can't be bothered and have negative attitudes.

Let me pull out my tiny violin 🎻
Poor poor employers, how will they manage?

I've got a brilliant, easy job and I can't be arsed either. I think it's specifically this Christmas period. Had so much fun and now it's almost over.

Your post comes across as emotionally immature and unable to read the room. Nasty.

Falalalalalalaetc · 03/01/2023 22:07

In my experience most people want to enjoy and be good at their job and give their best. Negative attitudes are usually the result of poor treatment by employers.

Lozois99 · 03/01/2023 23:07

Im Going to sound sanctimonious af but hear me. I always dreaded going back after xmas. Over the past fifteen years I have changed every aspect of my life. It’s totally different now. I did the emotional work. I left my husband. I’m a single parent. I’ve taken many many many financial and emotional blows, im significantly worse off in terms of money but I LOVE MY LIFE.

if you dread going back to normality then that’s a sign that your normality is bad for you.

Waitresstime · 03/01/2023 23:40

I feel the same. I am a secondary school teacher and am already having bad dreams about returning to work and waking up in a cold sweat. I have a manager who makes life very difficult in an already very stressful job. If I could change my job I’d do so willingly but I feel trapped . I hope your day goes well.

HashBrownandBeans · 05/01/2023 16:07

Had my interview yesterday evening and as soon as I saw the line manager was a woman I knew I was in there!(VERY male dominated industry). She was so happy to see a female applicant.

i just had the call, I got the job. I’m still shaking!

Good luck to all the other job hunters 🙏

My first day back was fine, however it has already started to decline. I am so drained

BezMills · 05/01/2023 18:24

Fingers crossed for you! I actually applied for this job twice, heard nothing back the first time, saw it again and thought “fuck it!” 🤣

😆😆 Usually the case lol Least it worked this time.

Thanks. There isn't much out there at the moment, but hoping as the weeks go on more jobs will magically appear 😆

boxingdayisbest · 05/01/2023 22:00

@HashBrownandBeans well done!!

Hope everyone is surviving.

I've found it really hard to focus. Work feels so mundane and I still really don't want to be there.

I have felt I'm acting my way through meetings almost as an outer body experience! I've been forced to face actual thinking today on a few things and dredge up my spreadsheets and remember on which of the many Teams sites the relevant documents are stored so feel as if I'm being pulled back into the mental overhead that is work (albeit against my will of wanting to stay in my Christmas happy place!)

Hope everyone else is getting through ok.

I’m off tomorrow as I’m working all weekend, but honestly it feels like I never had a single minute off. It’s taken me days to even get through my emails.

I often feel like I’m in the right job but at the same time I’m pretty sure it’s killing me. I was in the car today driving to court and on R2 they were talking about “snipers alley” where life gets people aged between 48-52 and if you survive that you’ve a high chance of hitting old age. I’m 47 and I’m pretty sure I won’t be here in 5 years time.

Oysterbabe · 06/01/2023 08:15

Good luck job hunters!
I've got 5 weeks left of my notice to work before trying something new. There was a thread about jobs that are awful and I posted on there about crying in the shower and hoping I get hit by a car while walking in. It prompted me to send a message to a friend about any job opportunities at their place and now I have a new job in a different field.
I'm still miserable while working my notice but the future is looking brighter at least.

Rosebel · 06/01/2023 11:35

I was so exhausted this week. The new responsibility has already reduced me to tears but been told no one else can do it and I'll get used to it. I don't work Fridays but yesterday I fell asleep as soon as I got home.
I've kind of accepted being back now but now have symptoms of Covid. Still have to work through it. I think I need another break.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 06/01/2023 12:02

I’ve been signed off sick yesterday. It’s terrifying what’s happening in our service!

JodiBeresford · 08/01/2023 20:57

It gets easier after the first week back. At least that's what I keep telling myself.

I have been off for 14 months as a mix of maternity and annual leave.
Due to go back tomorrow and I am very anxious, worried and just don't want to.
I'm so sad tonight

I’d try reading it again.

She didn’t say her kids have health issues. Just that because of kids and health she values wfh.
