Would You Judge Me Over Table Manners?

TheShellBeach · 16/12/2022 19:02

I eat with my fork in my right hand and my knife in my left hand.

I have always done this. I am not left-handed and have lost count of the number of people who have asked me if I am. It just feels easier for me. DH is the same.

Seriously - would you judge me and think I had bad table manners over this? AIBU to think people should use their cutlery whichever way round is comfortable?

No. My son does the same - apparently it's common in people with dyslexia.

I wouldn't notice tbh.

ODFOx · 16/12/2022 19:05

If you hold your cutlery correctly I wouldn't even notice which hand they were in. Otherwise I would notice, though not judge particularly (DH HKLP which I wouldn't let my DC).

dancinfeet · 16/12/2022 19:05

no, because my youngest DD also does. she also used to write with her left hand in reception year but her teacher discovered that she naturally used her right hand for scissors and so insisted she wrote with her right as well. She is 18 and still uses cutlery the opposite way round, and her handwriting (right hand) is awful

Bonjovispyjamas · 16/12/2022 19:05

I'm the same, I eat left handed but write right handed, it's not bad manners, it's just what is comfortable. I'd only judge you if you eat with your mouth open 😜

panko · 16/12/2022 19:06

I'd only notice if you held them strangely

Idontwantafuckingusername · 16/12/2022 19:06

If you eat politely and don't chew with your mouth open or shovel.it in like there's no tomorrow, then I don't judge you. Nobody is paying attention to which hand your fork is in, surely?

Suzi888 · 16/12/2022 19:06

No. Couldn’t care less!

This. The HKLP I would notice

Burgoo · 16/12/2022 19:07

I do the same and couldn't care any less what people think.
As long as you aren't on your phone at the table or chewing with your mouth open then I say who cares?

MushMonster · 16/12/2022 19:07

No, I would not judge at all. I may notice because it will look unusual to me, but think nothing of it otherwise.

multivac · 16/12/2022 19:08

Absolutely standard in the US; I do it sometimes, too. Can't stand people who confuse etiquette (meh) and consideration for others.

Americano75 · 16/12/2022 19:09

I don't think I've ever actually noticed how anyone holds their cutlery. I literally couldn't care less, and it baffles me that some do so much.

Doingmybest12 · 16/12/2022 19:11

Just holding cutlery in the opposite hands, I wouldn't even register it. I'm always laying the table the 'wrong way round though and I am right handed. This is the second thread on this recently. Feels a bit victorian to worry about this .

Hugasauras · 16/12/2022 19:12

I wouldn't even notice. I switch hands around when eating anyway Smile

polkadotpixie · 16/12/2022 19:34

@LittleBearPad What's HKLP?

MonkeyPuddle · 16/12/2022 19:37

As long as you don’t chew with your mouth open I wouldn’t even bat an eyelid

Georgeskitchen · 16/12/2022 19:43

The correct way is the way that works for you

Yarrawonga · 16/12/2022 19:47

I would just assume you were left handed. No “judgement” necessary.

DuchessDandelion · 16/12/2022 19:53

I would notice but I wouldn't dream of commenting, much less judging.

And I come from a family where good manners are more highly valued than nearly anything else 😉

OMG No!

I can't bear that.

I don't think I would notice.

ChocoFudge · 16/12/2022 19:59

I might notice but I wouldn't comment or care

BCBird · 16/12/2022 20:00

I eat like like this too but am right-handed. If you slurped your soup or ate with your mouth wide open then I might judge you. Fortunately I have never met anyone like that🙈

pocketvenuss · 16/12/2022 20:01

Do you hold your fork like a dagger? If not, all is cool.

ReluctantLondoners · 16/12/2022 20:02

Not at all. I might notice it, but wouldn't care especially. Like others, I'd only dislike someone's table manners if they shovel in food and chew with their mouths open
