Would You Judge Me Over Table Manners?

TheShellBeach · 16/12/2022 19:02

I eat with my fork in my right hand and my knife in my left hand.

I have always done this. I am not left-handed and have lost count of the number of people who have asked me if I am. It just feels easier for me. DH is the same.

Seriously - would you judge me and think I had bad table manners over this? AIBU to think people should use their cutlery whichever way round is comfortable?

I don't judge, but I do notice when people don't hold cutlery properly. I don't care about it, but I do notice it. I couldn't care which hand you use.

WandaWonder · 16/12/2022 20:04

Do people genuinely care how other people hold their culture?

Speaking while chewing like a cow yeah I judge but holding cutlery, no

panko · 16/12/2022 20:04

I know someone who holds their knife as if they were a surgeon and it puts me off a lot

Willmafrockfit · 16/12/2022 20:06

but if you are sitting at a table in close proximity to others it is better tthat everyone is the same otherwise you knock elbows.

lipstickwoman · 16/12/2022 20:08

Table manners is more about eating quietly, not lounging over the table and just using a fork in one hand to shovel, not talking with your mouth full etc.

Which is in which hand wouldn't bother me but the above would

@LittleBearPad What's HKLP?

Holds knife like pen? Although I am not sure why that would be an issue if we're all about people being comfortable.

ScarierThanBoo · 16/12/2022 20:09

No I wouldn't judge your table manners as I'm not an enormous cunt with superiority issues.
I'm also fed up with hearing "Oh but of cooooourse I wouldn't judge a disabled person who couldn't hold their cutlery the way that I prefeeeeerrr" ... invisible disabilities you fucking dimwits.

MarshaMelrose · 16/12/2022 20:09

As long as you used the knife and fork correctly, I might not even notice, and if I did, I wouldn't care. However if you held your fork in your fist to skewer your meat in place and tried to lever bits off round the edge with your knife, or you ate your pie and chips with a spoon, then, yes, I would judge that.

ODFOx · 16/12/2022 19:05

If you hold your cutlery correctly I wouldn't even notice which hand they were in. Otherwise I would notice, though not judge particularly (DH HKLP which I wouldn't let my DC).

I hate this idea there's a 'correct' way to hold cutlery. I'm 64 now but grew up with a ridiculous phobia because someone once laughed at me for the way I buttered bread. Now as an oldie I know this is absolute nonsense, and so is the 'correct way' to hold anything. How do you know the reason why someone is holding a fork? they may have a physical problem that means its the only way they CAN hold a fork. It's like the stupidity of expecting to pile peas on the curved back of a fork. Why would you do that?

Newlifestartingatlast · 16/12/2022 20:12

As long as your knife goes no where near your mouth I wouldn’t have an issue.
I can’t be doing with people who balance food on their knives or use knives to scrap plate then lick the knife.
I used to hate it when people used their folk like a spoon, but then spent 0 years working for a USA company and all the exercises there use their knives to cut food, put it down and then use their fork like a spoon to shovel it in 🤣🤣🙄

Yes this

Goodywhoshoes · 16/12/2022 20:13

My DS does this, he then saws through stuff and the knife hits the tines of the fork so it drives me mad. I say nothing but I do have concerns that others may judge him.

iklboo · 16/12/2022 20:15

Not remotely. The first time I saw DH eating I said 'oh, you eat with your knife & fork the other way round. My cousin does that'. He said he thought I was great because everyone else used to say 'the wrong way round'.

Newlifestartingatlast · 16/12/2022 20:17

talking cutlery. Is anyone else perplexed why restaurants, pubs, cafe etc no longer provide a desert fork Along with the spoon?
is it just me that gets pissed off chasing my taste citron or whatever round my plate with a spoon and then have to use a finger to push onto spoon…
no fork with truffle or other sloopy stuff- fair enough
but anything crunchy, crispy , pastry , brittle or little bits needs a fork imho and it just pisses me off.

ok saves on washing up but how much saving for a pudding fork? Really? 🤷🏼‍♀️🙄

Newlifestartingatlast · 16/12/2022 20:18

Tarte citron not taste 🙄

ScarierThanBoo · 16/12/2022 20:19

@Newlifestartingatlast I can beat the lack of dessert fork. How about being served dessert (a gateaux for example or a fresh cream cake or scone) with zero cutlery?

Oliol · 16/12/2022 20:20

No. It's unrelated to having/not having decent table manners.

Aw that's so sweet and true

MarshaMelrose · 16/12/2022 20:21

I agree @Newlifestartingatlast . I pinch a fork from another table.

icegoose · 16/12/2022 20:23

No.
As long as you aren't chewing loudly, shoveling food in with a fork or putting your knife in your mouth I don't care.

Do you ask the people at the table before you randomly swipe it 😉🤣
I end up trying to ask for one, but sometimes if short staffed it takes too long and I can’t watch a pudding untouched for very long 😳

PenanceAdair · 16/12/2022 20:25

To me, good table manners is about consideration for others eating with you and practising good hygiene. I couldn't care less which hand someone's holding their fork in or if they're eating with a fork or spoon. Whatever works for you is fine by me.

CrownTheTurkey · 16/12/2022 20:25

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't even notice.
My husband is left handed so he holds his cutlery the opposite way to me, it took me weeks to notice.

CulturePigeon · 16/12/2022 20:31

No - I wouldn't consider that bad table manners. To me, bad table manners would be anything which made life unpleasant for your fellow diners: eating with your mouth open, picking your teeth, using your hands when not appropriate, slurping your soup or drink, getting drunk etc etc.

I wouldn't even notice which hand you held your cutlery in!
