Bi or pansexual

dawnfromgavinandstacey · 11/12/2022 20:47

I've just been blocked by someone that I know via friends and family. They are semi famous.

They are out and gay and happy.

They have just come out on Instagram as pansexual. I have asked how is it different to being bi.

I am bi.

I'm really sorry if I'm offending anyone but to me it's the same.

You like the person. Doesn't matter how they identify you just fancy them. For whatever reason. You just do. You like them.

I've been blocked and asked snottily if I get the difference.

I will be honest. No I don't. You like who you like. Regardless.

What is the difference. You like who you like. Regardless of if they are a a man or or women.

Have I missed something here?

You’ve missed nothing, complex labels are just the current fashion in the absence of goth/emo/punk etc. They’ve filled a culture void. They’ll look back and feel a bit silly in 10 years.

bellinisurge · 11/12/2022 20:48

It is exactly the same. Exactly. Sorry you are being made to feel shit

Sprouttreesareamazing · 11/12/2022 20:48

Never understood why announcements are necessary..
Don't feed into their drama imo op.

You haven’t missed anything. There are two sexes, you’re attracted to both, that’s being bisexual. What additional sexes of human are this person attracted to?

AndyWarholsPiehole · 11/12/2022 20:52

Doesn't pansexual mean you're open to dating trans people? If so, I think it's quite a handy term, especially for dating sites.

Sprouttreesareamazing · 11/12/2022 20:53

No offence intended but on a thread recently someone asked do any women ever announce they love cock?!
Purely attention seeking. And tbh does anyone really give a hoot about other people's preferences?

This. Pansexual included people who don’t identify as male or female (so they/them non binary and the like).

I’m attracted to men & women. So use bisexual

Soubriquet · 11/12/2022 20:55

Bisexual to me is liking a man or a woman
Pansexual is liking the person. They could be male, female, trans or non-binary.

nosyupnorth · 11/12/2022 20:55

Seriously? They came out and your first reaction was asking snotty questions quibbling over terminology and you're wondering why they blocked you?

They identify as pan. It has a lot of overlap with bi. So what? Lots of words have synonyms or other words with similar meanings. It is sad that your reaction to this is to nitpick them over vocabularly rather than just being supportive or minding your own business.

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 11/12/2022 20:55

I thought that it related to being attracted to trans people also.

Soubriquet · 11/12/2022 20:56

And I’m a female preferring bisexual

Waiteflower · 11/12/2022 20:57

I'd say bisexual is when you're attracted to biological males or females and pansexual included trans and non binary folk so it'd make sense to put that on a dating website but don't know if it needs a big announcement.

Apparently there's 47 different sexualities - it can get quite confusing.

This 💯

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 11/12/2022 20:58

Isn't the difference that bisexual people are attracted to men who identify as men, and women who identify as women.

Pansexual means you like men and women however they identify.

JoyBeorge · 11/12/2022 21:00

Semi famous you say? I think we need to be the judges of that. Names please.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/12/2022 21:01

There are two sexes.

ShowOfHands · 11/12/2022 21:01

I'm pretty eye rolly about the 672 genders and ever evolving labels but do see a difference between bi and pan. As others have said, bi means attracted to both sexes. Pan means sex doesn't matter at all to you where attraction is concerned.

I know a couple of instances where the distinction has really mattered for a couple of reasons.

Pearls1234 · 11/12/2022 21:02

No, I’m with you and also bi. You haven’t done anything wrong.
We like men and women. Pans like people of ‘any gender’, however you choose to take that.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/12/2022 21:02

Blah blah endless labels about who you might shag given half a chance, it's tedious.

I thought 30 years ago the aim was for people not to have to 'come out', for us all to just accept anyone could want to shag anyone and not think one desire was more important than another.

Now it seems the important thing is the exclusivity of your label. It's the sex equivalent of "oh I like this band, you wouldn't have heard of them".

Waiteflower · 11/12/2022 21:02

@AnneLovesGilbert sexuality isn't your sex though is it?

Bi is male/female. Pan covers non binary, trans etc

Shutthegatepeter · 11/12/2022 21:22

You describe yourself as bi-sexual. So I assume you’re attracted to men and women. I also assume you’re attracted to men that were born men, and women that were born women? If you are also attracted to transgender, transsexual and androgynous people then you are pansexual. Pansexual people can be attracted to literally any other human, where as bi sexual are only attracted to cis men and cis women. The bi part means two, like bilingual or bicycle. This means it’s limited to 2, so pansexual is just a variation that includes trans, androgynous etc.

SirenSays · 11/12/2022 21:40

I've had snotty responses from people for saying I'm bi instead of pan. I hate how it sounds, it always makes me think of pots and pans 😅
