Sorry it's a harry one

Just getting a bit pissed off with hypocritical people lately and turn on twitter to find it full of harry and Megan, which got me directing my annoyance at hypocrites to Harry.

I did used to love the guy, and no hate from me here, but what I can't understand is:

  1. The boy (man?) hates the press apparently, yet is in the media every second of his own choosing
  1. He didn't want the press to use Diana for media gains and money making. Now his new netflix documentary appears to be going to do just that, judging by the trailor (which has already exploited Diana for clicks without the documentary even being out yet)
  1. The man professes the royal family are all racist, but HE is the one who wore a nazi uniform, black faced himself, and has used racial slurs to many. (I don't think any of the other royals have gone so far as to dress up as a Nazi have they?)

Sorry for doing another Harry and megs thread, but the hypocrisy has really got to me today for some reason! (maybe PMT!)

If you r fed up with Harry threads, feel to coment on what other people you know have done hypocritical things that drive your nuts!! No need to mention Harry or Megan!

And Meghan was smart enough to know she doesn't have to put up with the British public, who as we have seen are in large numbers bigots, racists, and idiots.

But not smart enough to marry into a racist family. Which as as dark skinned (important) mixed race person I would have seen the red flags coming a mile off, particularly if the person I was dating was brought up to think calling someone a P**i was acceptable.

doorheckk · 08/12/2022 00:09

What is it about the H&M constructive criticism ‘bashing’ that gets under your skin??

I'm intrigued by it as I said. Undoubtedly they attract far more criticism than other celebs & royals & I don't see how it's warranted. I don't think they are particularly "good", I just don't see them as "bad". Obviously there are elements of sexism & racism but is it also the doth thy cap reverence that some give to the RF? Are people personally offended because they see the RF as their own family? Im not English & do find it quite strange tbh.

doorheckk · 08/12/2022 00:10

@vera99 that would be more entertaining!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/12/2022 00:11

Been reading posts. Lots of knickers. Lots of knots! 😆

doorheckk · 08/12/2022 00:12

Here’s a thought - you could maybe answer with an actual point rather than these yawntastic smart arse passive aggressive responses??

What's the point, you ignore them or they fly over your head?

Ridiculous comment and disrespectful. The Queen served the country well and I think your accusations of racism are unfounded.

And for those who want to abolish the monarchy can you name a single politician who you would want to represent our country as a president? We. Can’t even vote in a decent Prime Minister

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 08/12/2022 00:03

Also to pick up on a PP - where is the evidence that the Queen Mother was a Nazi sympathiser?

There were a lot of people who initially thought Hitler (Mussolini as well) were good leaders. They brought their countries out of a period of chaos, and developed infrastructure, jobs, etc

Of course today we know where that led.

But in 1935 it wasn't unreasonable to take the approach that Hitler was doing a lot of good, and that his weird obsession against the Jews was unfortunate and wrong, but would wither away because it was so ridiculous. At least they weren't Bolshevik, which was seen as worse (and had murdered the RF's close relatives) and killed more in the gulags than Hitler did in the concentration camps - to provide a contemporary perspective.

The Queen Mother was committed to the war against Germany by the time the war broke out.

For me the reasons I dislike them, in a nutshell is

  • The hypocrisy. Preaching about the environment and poverty whilst being filthy rich and flying about in private jets. It’s annoying. I can’t stand any celeb doing this TBH who doesn’t practice what they preach
  • The porkie pies. So many in the Oprah interview and neither of them were bright enough to tell lies that couldn’t be contradicted.
  • they stink of wealth and privilege and seem to moan that they don’t have enough. They have about a thousand times more than most people could imagine and yet complain that their lifestyle is expensive. They also tried to cash in on the Sussex name given to them which doesn’t sit right with me
  • The fake news-esque style of them both. The trailer has used footage that has nothing to do with them. Oprah’s interview similarly fabricated headlines. And I’m sure they didn’t personally make either of those things happen but equally it clearly doesn’t bother them one bit
  • The way they drop in and out of the RF. which, if they did as they said they would do and live a dual life overseas then fine. But they want to hold salacious interviews and say hurtful things and still expect to get a front row seat at a royal event
  • The complete surprise from Harry that the RF has a hierarchy. It’s literally built on a hierarchy of birth. Didn’t he notice?
  • the way they only want the ‘good bits’ of the RF - such as their DC to have titles (despite declaring after Archie’s birth that they wanted him to be a private citizen. And for them to keep their titles. They are like children, they want everything their way and no compromise.
  • The total insensitivity of slagging off an old woman whilst her DH was dying. And similarly releasing a Netflix show and book about their ‘pain’ at a time their dad has only just lost his mum.
  • Everything they do is tone deaf. I’m sure they are told they are relatable and duke and Duchess of the people etc but really a man with a dodgy past re racism from a family with history colonising, preaching about how people shouldn’t be racist, is a joke.

Just a few things. I sympathise with them in many ways too - her family are fucking awful and I’d have dropped them like hot potatoes too. And I don’t think I’ll ever quite believe anyone thought it was ok for a 12yo boy to walk behind his mum’s coffin while the world watched. And I don’t blame them for buggering off and leaving it all behind. But they are SO tone deaf and out of touch, it’s hard not to get irritated by it.

I agree with you, I remember reading newspaper articles in a book about the Nazi reign and the positive publicity they received at a certain time.

But nothing I can find points to the Queen Mother specifically being a Nazi sympathiser. Obviously David and Wallis were (The Traitor King is an excellent read that details it all!)

Pandor · 07/12/2022 23:12

Has anyone ever laid out the precise rules as to when you are, and aren’t allowed to dress up as a Nazi without that demonstrating that you are in fact terribly racist?

Ralph Feinnes put in an incredible performance as Amon Goeth in Schindler’s List, but presumably that didn’t make him a racist as it was a very serious film.

The whole Mel Brooks “Springtime for Hitler” routine in the Producers was done for laughs, but presumably isn’t evidence of appalling racism either?

I used to watch a lot of Allo Allo as a child and don’t ever remember Richard Gibson being hounded by accusations of racism for his portrayal of Herr Flick of the gestapo, but perhaps I missed it.

In fact, I suspect there are literally countless examples of people dressing as Nazis over the years that have gone utterly unremarked upon.

it’s almost as if the motivation behind someone dressing up as a Nazi, whether that it is to make a serious point, to make people laugh, or to showcase their love and support of Far Right political views, is actually really important.

You could almost say that whilst a young prince dressing up as a Nazi amongst friends in the context of a fancy dress night is clearly naive, it doesn’t “necessarily” demonstrate an actual love of nazis or reveal any deep seated racism.

But no…much simpler to just call him a racist.

This maybe the worst defense of dressing up as a Nazi I have ever heard.

Kudos to you.

Now I’m disappointed as I wanted it to be about Harry Styles. Sigh.

In his defence, the media hounded his wife and trash talked her like mad. A bit different to wanting to have your say and try and make a good difference to the world. I honestly believe he means well.

Personally I find it all a bit boring!

I think he means well too, he's a good hearted soul who has ended up a toxic mix of being massively privileged and self important to the point where he can't even see it, not brilliantly clever, troubled by mental health and surrounded by people giving him really bad advice to exploit him for their own gains.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 08/12/2022 00:00

@Sigma33 absolutely spot on. It’s such a shame that he missed an excellent opportunity

My DC are mixed race and whilst we have been very lucky to have experienced minimal racist comments (there’s still time they’re only 5 & 9) it genuinely breaks my heart that there are so many fucking arseholes out there who will tie themselves in knots to excuse racist words like P**I and dressing up as Nazis and who don’t think people preaching about racism should even attempt to speak about their own racist actions. It would be such a win for POC such as my children to be able to see privileged white men owning their fuck ups and misunderstandings around race and acknowledging how it makes people feel - not whining that someone may or may not have said something potentially unsavoury to a loved one and that’s only when they started giving a shit themselves

Yep. Mum to black daughters (trans-racial adoption) who have experienced outright racist abuse (being called a ni*r on a bus by an adult male) as well as so many microaggressions.

I was brought up to be 'woke' and an 'SJW' (to use the terms of abuse that I embrace) but only truly began to understand the level of insidious racism once my DDs experienced it and I began to see the world through their experiences.

Just as I only began to understand what it is to live in a context of homophobia when I had close friends who are gay.

I don't beat myself up about my previous lack of understanding, but I do hold my hands up to not understanding how pervasive, exhausting, and undermining it is to have to factor in - day to day - that people may be hostile to you no matter what you do. That by existing you are an enemy of 'decent people' or a 'threat to society'.

There is footage of the then Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret larking about and doing Nazi salutes in 1933 with their mother and future Edward VIII.

Hitler had just taken power.

There was no indication that this was a gesture of support for the Nazis. And at that point the Nazis had not enacted any legislation that discriminated against any group in society.

Seek some help with your PMT if it means Prince Harry ‘really gets to you‘.

I reckon some posters are suffering high blood pressure and heading for a heart attack with the cause being Harry and Meghan and this Netflix programme. 😬

@Sigma33 i absolutely agree, I’m so sorry your DDs have experienced that. I too only learnt a lot about racism and the way it affects people when meeting my DH and them having my kids. Not that I was racist before of course - but I have a much better understanding of it and yes that does come from marrying into a non-white family. Which isn’t the way people should be learning, but it is what it is and I can only hope for change for my DC. However MN threads of late and comments on social media give me very little confidence that the world is changing its views on racism sadly.

You think criticising daddy for not giving you more money is ‘nice’? Or lies told about your childhood?

Thats not what he said though is it? It was he withdrawal of funded security when there were constant and credible risks to them and their children lives?

Wasn't their location leaked in canada and then security pulled at the same time? which is why they went to the US as they were able to get security there and guarded accommodation?

Not sure what you mean about childhood lies? Maybe i missed something

If anything people have become more entrenched in their views, which is what happens when the wrong people are preaching about it.

That’s just a long way of saying he moaned about daddy cutting him off. He’s a millionaire in his own right, he can well afford his own security but he wanted the British taxpayer to fork out for it instead.

Why should they get UK funded security in Canada? The taxpayer shouldn’t be funding their choice to move abroad. They quit the RF - you don’t get to do that but take the expensive bits only for Royals with you.

Re his childhood - a sob story about never riding on the back of his dad’s bike. Then several pictures of him riding bikes with his dad showed up. It was a lazy lie and an attempt to make him sound like he had an awful childhood.
