This FB post is doing the rounds amongst my friends.

Is it just me?

@crussont yes I read the complete OP.

I agree with previous posts that Asian is used as a descriptive as opposed to racism.

Whoever wrote this clearly felt strongly enough that others needed some kind of warning. But the wording is far from what I'd choose personally, but that doesn't make it racist no.

What do you think about the time line? Do you think it's really hard to believe?

What about the amount of info given by the police, difficult to believe?

'SOME OF THESE ASIAN PEOPLE'

Anyone who read that sentence and didn't think the post was racist is, well...

Racist?

DwpDwp · 01/12/2022 21:55

It’s obviously and clearly racist.

The post itself is very easy to find on Facebook, and includes a photograph of the man in question (admittedly, it’s the back/side of his head).

She could have warned people about the man in the photograph, but instead smeared a whole ethnic group.

CatByDay · 01/12/2022 21:58

Definitely racist. Between this and the reaction to the Susan hussey story yesterday I worry about this country.

It's also very strangely worded. Attention seeking almost...

I can see where there could be discrepancies, but nothing that shouts "not true" to me.

I presume they went to Heathrow the day before because they had a cheap flight leaving at some ungodly hour of night. The policeman may have shared information, perhaps unofficially, because he was annoyed that the offender wasn't going to be charged. And the fellow could have hung around long enough to be arrested because he had mental health problems; in my case, after I ran away, the man followed me back to the place he'd taken me from.

I can't see the police or a solicitor thinking the Chinese embassy would give them information about someone's asylum claim, though! The mother may have misunderstood something. But on the other hand, who knows what she was told?

So leaving at an ungodly hour in the morning, but the officer was up emailing her with more details at this ungodly hour.... Seems totally plausible.

WildImaginings · 01/12/2022 22:02

@Conkersareback exactly.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 01/12/2022 22:07

Am I seeing something different to what other people are seeing?!

It has all the trappings of massively overt racism!!

This woman’s DD was allegedly grabbed by an Asian man.

Shes gone on to say she wants people to know ‘what these Asian people are doing’x

That is, in its most basic form, claiming that a whole race behaves poorly simply because ONE person in that race behaved poorly.

She wouldn’t be saying “all these white men” if a white man had grabbed her DD.

My 5yo would know that’s racism FFS.

Unless you’re inherently very, very stupid - or just racist yourself - how could you possibly not see how that’s racism!!

Isitsixoclockalready · 01/12/2022 22:11

Lumping Asian people in as one homogeneous group is definitely dodgy.

redbigbananafeet · 01/12/2022 22:16

CourtneeLove no I've not seen any documentaries about m Chinese grooming gangs. Can you direct me to them?

SleepyAnkylosaurus · 01/12/2022 22:17

Racist and I’m not convinced it happened either.

And you only see discrepancies? Grin

Well, as I've detailed above, the stuff about China sounds odd, but the other three points have a plausible explanation.

I openly admit my instinct is to side with women when they are called liars for complaining about a man's unacceptable behaviour.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 01/12/2022 22:23

SleepyAnkylosaurus · 01/12/2022 22:17

Racist and I’m not convinced it happened either.

So many things don’t add up. Not least the police turning up and making an arrest within minutes and the whole world seemingly stopping. And not to touch her arm because of DNA? Doesn’t sound right. The fact the actual ‘attempted kidnap’ is glosses over and not really described in great detail speaks volumes. And catching a plane in 2 hours one minute then suddenly the next day.

Oh well hopefully the mum has got the attention she clearly craves

Conkersareback · 01/12/2022 22:25

@Coughybreak maybe you should not just side with women because they're called liars, maybe you should read the facts and decide, women lie!

It's like you saying, inside with everyone that says Asian men are predators, that's racist!

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 01/12/2022 22:25

Also racist - describing how the 9yo shouldn’t have to deal with “some Asian man” grabbing her - would a white man have been better?

Re the trauma - I imagine if something like this did happen it would be scary AF but what I don’t think would help would be to have your mum screaming like a banshee and following the man around before melodramatically throwing you into a travel agents.

VestaTilley · 01/12/2022 22:26

What’s racist about it?

Provided it’s true and not fake news, he tried to abduct a child and is basically getting away with it. And if he’s Chinese then he is Asian.

YABU. Or do you think we shouldn’t mention crimes with a person of colour as the perpetrator?

Because it was one man who allegedly did this and she’s ‘warning people of the Asians that are going round doing this’.

In what world is that NOT racist?!

ClangingBell · 01/12/2022 22:31

If people have read that whole post to the end and come to the conclusion it’s not racist, I have a strong suspicion that hold some pretty racist opinions themselves.

GCAcademic · 01/12/2022 22:31

Coughybreak · 01/12/2022 21:19

How did you find out they were untrue? I wouldn't know what research I could do to establish the facts in each case.

A case that hasn't gone to court would be very unlikely to be covered by the mainstream media. If police issued a warning the press would probably report that. But I can't see the police telling everyone who asks if a woman complained that a man tried to lead her child away. So I don't know how you or I would get that information.

As an academic, do you have access to better sources of information than the general public?

If you don't have direct evidence that they were invented, it seems strange that you automatically dismiss women's accounts of a distressing experience.

In some of the cases, the police stated that they had no reports of the claimed incident. The posts were also removed.

Rinatinabina · 01/12/2022 22:31

I wouldn’t have a problem with someone saying “asian man, at this time at this location”. It seems to be saying that there are loads of chinese men trying to abduct children. I’m a bit hmmm about that.

declutteringmymind · 01/12/2022 22:32

I was ok with it until the last paragraph 'these people' where she has applied the deeds of this one person to an entire nationality.

She makes some valid points re: difficulties in checks, and if any man was following a child and grabbing her, no cultural allowances should be made.

However it is definitely xenophobic and has a nasty undercurrent to it.

AlwaysGinPlease · 01/12/2022 22:39

I absolutely loathe racism but this is not it. But that " it's racist" attitude is what allowed those large gangs of Asian pedophiles to get away with it for so long.

Coughybreak · 01/12/2022 22:40

Conkersareback · 01/12/2022 22:25

I was with you up till the last two words!

There are no independent statements or verified facts available. I have read the woman's statement, which is all we have of the facts, and seen what look like some discrepancies. But overall, the main facts look credible to me. Weighing up the (very limited and partial) evidence, I am not convinced she is lying. And I'm not going to say I think she is, just to go along with the majority.

On the question of racism, what I read is a furious woman yelling her rage that this man got away with it, and in the process hitting out unfairly at others. Not good. But not in the same league as taking a child.

I've tried not to let my opinion be affected by the mockery of this uneducated woman's bad grammar and writing style. I mean, that makes me think less of the people mocking her, not of her.

Anyway, I'm done now. Sending my love to all children and parents affected by incidents like this.

stockpilingallthecheese · 01/12/2022 22:42

Isn't it all bullshit anyway? I've seen endless variations of these sort of things on FB. I
