Following on from a thread about interior design hates, I thought I'd do a festive version.
I'll start

I do not like:

Pop up trees

Blue lights - flashing or not

Inflatables

Rope light figures

Fibre optics

Projectors on houses.

What are yours?

Blue lights (unless Hanukkah)

Flashing lights.

Depictions of Rudolph. Not a real reindeer.

Elves.

That Snow Dog who ruined the whole point of the story.

olivehater · 14/11/2022 20:54

Over colour coordinated Christmas trees particularly in non Christmassy colours like blue or purple. Even worse if it’s on a white tree.

Tinsel-can’t bear the stuff, 80s clutter filled homes with a load of Tinsel all over it…shudder!

Elves are invariably creepy little bastards who need to be deported back to the North Pole ASAP.

I don't like flashing lights on the roadside, but other than that, I don't mind gaudy, bright, childish decorations or subtle, tasteful ones. I don't discriminate against festive styles, only the bloody elves!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/11/2022 20:59

Very tidy perfectly matched Christmas trees with a limited colour palette.

LolaSmiles · 14/11/2022 21:00

Tinsel, because I have funny childhood memories of covering the house with the stuff and now can't stand it.

Most outdoor decorations beyond white/cream fairy lights.

Christmas trees that are themed, especially if they're done in tasteful grey/beige/neutral tones to match a room scheme.

One of my friends and I have opposite taste in Christmas trees. I'd hate her tasteful neutral themed decoration and she'd hate my any colour goes tree.

Absolutely.

Any themed decor at all, so using this season's colours or any of that shit. We have a big collection of entirely random baubles and other things to hang on the three. DC get to pick one new one a year and some of them are hideous but they all look just as a tree should when they are all randomly together.

And I hate a tinseless tree. A tree without tinsel is a naked and sad tree regardless of whatever else is on it.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/11/2022 21:01

Overly done 'insta' trees

Blue light (again unless Hanukkah)

No nativity scene - but that's just me - I LOVE mine

Inflatable Santa's

Special Christmas cushions and bedding

But I do have a certain admiration for those who go big - like you can see the house from space big! We have a few here and the kids loved looking at them.

WhatTheFlap · 14/11/2022 21:01

Fake snow on windows
Signs saying “Santa Stop Here”
Those gnome like door stop things
Tinsel on trees
Fairy lights in any colour but “warm white”
Big bows on trees
Those gummy sticker things kids stick on windows

Eurydice84 · 14/11/2022 21:02

Angels, in any shape or form

Sidking · 14/11/2022 21:02

Pink, purple etc decorations

Trees that aren't tree colour (we once had a white tree and multicolour lights on a black wire, looked tragic)

Blue lights anywhere, multi-colour lights on the tree (fine outside, they remind me of grans house)

Inflatables

Nutcrackers

Front doors with giant bows on

Foil ceiling decs (though it's very nostalgic!)

TBF hate is a strong word, I just couldn't have any of it myself

Isahlo · 14/11/2022 21:03

Anything goes except blue lights especially blue flashing outdoor lights that people mistakenly think are emergency vehicles and cause people to unnecessarily slow and stop
hate them

Stressedmum2017 · 14/11/2022 21:03

Ah well I think most things in the OP are more for the kids benefit right? Which is going to be a bit tacky and garish lol I like most christmas things but hate that pink mouse from Aldi everyone is going mad for this year its ugly as hell. Not really a fan of nutcrackers either, generally they have quite menacing faces? I would get a cute one if I saw one though.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 14/11/2022 21:06

Plenty of votes against the blue lights

They do give off a nice "dying in an icy crevasse" ambiance I feel.

What Christmas decor do you hate?
ghostyslovesheets · 14/11/2022 21:08

I love my mates I really do - I only have friends on FB but by God - the moment Elf on the fucking shelf seasons hits I want to strangle them with fairy lights!

I'd say that elf is my most hated thing about this season

VollywoodHampires · 14/11/2022 21:09

Another vote for blue lights and any blue themed decorations, why just why would anyone choose them, so cold looking and not the least bit festive.

gluenotsoup · 14/11/2022 21:09

I hate tinsel, blue anything, inflatable anything and giant red door bows that look like the infectious- keep- away plague sign.
I also don’t like over the top ostentatious front porch displays.

bigknickersbigknockers · 14/11/2022 21:10

Gonks, I just want to rip their heads off.

DCINightingale · 14/11/2022 21:11

Came on here to say gonks. Fucking gonks, hate them!

autumnlights · 14/11/2022 21:12

Anything to do with penguins. They are nothing to do with Christmas. They aren't even anything to do with the North Pole because they are from the south.

Anything pink and fluffy

ShaunaTheSheep · 14/11/2022 21:13

Well there is an awful lot of things mentioned that I wouldn't have in my home but honestly, I love it all except the flashing blue lights.
