Following on from a thread about interior design hates, I thought I'd do a festive version.
I'll start

I do not like:

Pop up trees

Blue lights - flashing or not

Inflatables

Rope light figures

Fibre optics

Projectors on houses.

What are yours?

There is nothing more relatable than a depressed, half-deflated Rudolph on Boxing Day morning.

sandgrown · 14/11/2022 21:39

Why the hate for nutcrackers? Do you mean the little metal pincers for cracking your nuts? They are very useful 😁

PearlSlaghoople · 14/11/2022 21:40

Sorry to de-rail…. But what is ‘lametta?’
And what is tinsel made of, that gives it that distinctive smell?

AffableApple · 14/11/2022 21:40

Anything up before 1st December (2nd week of December is best). Door wreaths (who died?), door bows (kill me), Elf on the Shelf (tell the Santa Stasi who killed whom); flashing lights; anything which attempts to be tasteful and coordinated in theme - see also in colour - who wants pastel pink tinsel? Did I mention Elf on the Shelf?

Fairislefandango · 14/11/2022 21:40

Artificial Christmas trees, especiallynon-green ones and those fibre optic ones.
Any outdoor decorations except lights. Especially inflatable ones.
Elf on a shelf. I've never seen one irl, but hate the idea of them.
Not really decor, but I don't like tacky Christmas jumpers, pyjamas or bedding.

KimberleyClark · 14/11/2022 21:40

Minimalist Christmas trees with half a dozen decorations and a string of lights that look like they’ve been thrown on.

SnowFir · 14/11/2022 21:41

Fake poinsettias. Seen on channel 5 Christmas movies

Sopharsogood · 14/11/2022 21:42

Those creepy nutcrackers

Bpdqueen · 14/11/2022 21:42

Wreaths they remind me of funerals

sqirrelfriends · 14/11/2022 21:42

All of yours OP and also :

door bows
blue light or any “cold” coloured lights
unnatural coloured trees

I do however love tonnes of colour and some really tacky 80s decorations we’ve had for yonks (since the 80s obviously).

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 14/11/2022 21:43

Elf on a shelf

Flashing lights, particularly blue flashing lights

Inflatables outside houses

mangomelba · 14/11/2022 21:43

Any kind of Santa sleigh decoration is fine before Boxing Day, but anytime after that it seems a bit obsolete. Lights and trees seem fine until 12th night but anything Christmas Eve themed is better switched off after then, in my opinion.

sjxoxo · 14/11/2022 21:45

-pink decorations of any kind
-white artificial Xmas trees
-tall, skinny artificial trees
-blue lights
-peacock feathers/burgundy flowers/fake flowers and similar items that are not festive but seem to have become an option
-furry Xmas tree base covers
-those Father Xmas characters people have climbing up their houses..naff imo

MenaiMna · 14/11/2022 21:06

These gnome gonk things give me the christmas creeps

When/why did these gnome/honk things become festive?!

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 14/11/2022 21:45

Elf on the Shelf gives me the willies! As do those awful Nutcracker figures!
Those 70s style foil decorations that come in packets - so tacky!
Blue lights
Not keen on trees that aren’t green & much prefer real ones to artificial
Houses that are plastered in outdoor decorations
Most musical figures - some are good fun but a lot are incredibly annoying
Those plastic “ picks” with ponsettia, pine cones etc.

FredaFox · 14/11/2022 21:47

Coconutcream123 · 14/11/2022 21:23

Those giant bows on front doors

Oooh good one!
The poor postmen trying to post letters when it's covered by organza

these guys.

I saw a lifesize one in a shop window today for the princely sum of £1500

Tinsel and coloured lights. Just odd.

This is an 80s childhood!

Ain't it that stuff you lob all over the Xmas tree?!

mincen · 14/11/2022 21:51

I'm not a fan of tinsel! Some people manage to make it look lovely but I just can't make it work, looks ridiculous!

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/11/2022 21:51

Blue lights. I can cope with everything else.

HeadNorth · 14/11/2022 21:52

Tasteful matched decorations make me sad. I love the random tacky shit I’ve collected over the years being dragged out and dusted down every year, including the gubbins my kids made when they were wee. Xmas decs are not about being understated and tasteful.

SilentNike · 14/11/2022 21:54

It’s a shame that no one has yet designed a nutcracker decoration that doesn’t look like it’s been possessed by satan in a Christmas horror film and is going to hide under your bed and chomp you when you try to get out, because I love the ballet.

HauntersGonnaHaunt · 14/11/2022 21:54

I'm getting everything listed on this thread. I can't wait to find out which of my neighbours are mumsnetters.

Twawmyarse · 14/11/2022 21:55

I myself fall under the “classic” Christmas decor of real tree, natural wreaths, classic Christmas colours, real holly/ivy foliage foraged from our garden and log fire burning plus plenty of Christmassy-scented candles etc. However, I also love going to friends/families houses and seeing all the variety of styles - clashing colours, tinsel, blow-up snowmen complete with flashing snow-globe on the front lawn, projectors etc. Going to my dm’s is my favourite as she still uses all the tacky plastic baubles from when I was young including a now very sparse-looking snowman made from pipe cleaners and a retro Santa head in a green plastic mirrored bauble. She also still hangs all those brightly coloured foil lantern things from the ceiling (I don’t even think you can buy these any more?) and ALWAYS multi-coloured lights - never tasteful warm white🤣. My friend always has 3 themed (all plastic) trees - one Disney, one 70’s kitsch and one boy-themed one which she lets her sons decorate however they like (usually with Star Wars & Lego toys!)
I love the individuality and how everyone has their own look.

I would say the only thing I really don’t like are the cold white/blue fairy lights and that creepy elf thing that supposedly moves of its own accord and will probably cause years of trauma for today’s children!
