What Christmas decor do you hate?

Following on from a thread about interior design hates, I thought I'd do a festive version.
I'll start

I do not like:

Pop up trees

Blue lights - flashing or not

Inflatables

Rope light figures

Fibre optics

Projectors on houses.

What are yours?

Sorry to de-rail…. But what is ‘lametta?’
And what is tinsel made of, that gives it that distinctive smell?

I'm a complete weirdo because I love the smell of tinsel! It reminds me of being a child and takes me back to how excited I was at Christmas as a kid!

longtompot · 14/11/2022 21:55

Blue lights
Inflatables

I think I like most other things

thecatsthecats · 14/11/2022 21:56

I keep threatening to make a biblically accurate angel for our tree. Six wings and eight eyes etc.

I hate signs - Santa Stop Here, etc, but unfortunately MIL gave us a personalised one, eck.

Otherwise I collect Christmas decorations, and make my own, ahem, unique contributions. We also observe a collection of international Christmas traditions, e.g. Pooping log, Yule Lads, St Nicks slippers etc.

onmywayamarillo · 14/11/2022 21:56

Isn't Christmas about tradition within each family?

Some like this thing , some like that?

No one cares what you think it's just how we all do Christmas and how each of us feels what Christmas should be.
Don't judge just enjoy your Christmas 😀

Prescottdanni123 · 14/11/2022 21:57

White Christmas trees. Bleurgh.

FourChimneys · 14/11/2022 21:58

Artificial trees of any size/colour/style
Artificial wreaths
Door bows
Tinsel
Shiny baubles
Any lights other than warm white
Inflatable stuff in gardens
Flashing lights
Those weird projected lights
Santa stop here signs
Reindeer made of logs
Jelly-type stuff stuck on windows
Artificial snow
Anything depicting an angel/shepherd/king
Naff cuddly toys
Christmas bedding
Christmas jumpers
Christmas socks

Thing is, I don't do Christmas and while I dislike all the above, I would defend your right to have it. Just don't invite me round 😂

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/11/2022 20:56

Tinsel-can’t bear the stuff, 80s clutter filled homes with a load of Tinsel all over it…shudder!

100% Tinsel. It's Ghastly.

This is meant to be lighthearted.

Merry Christmas 🎄

HeadNorth I know someone who puts the same star on her tree every year, a wobbly glittery thing made by her son at playgroup. Her son is 30 next spring.

Schmeeeee · 14/11/2022 22:01

I also cannot stand Christmas jumpers. Horrifically tacky. And Christmas earrings and Christmas themed headbands.

I shrink back in horror if I have to sit next to someone wearing that shit to my company Christmas meal.

Just no

lollipoprainbow · 14/11/2022 22:01

Perfect uniform fake trees

Minibea · 14/11/2022 22:02

Honestly I hate artificial Xmas trees, real all the way here (dons hard hat 🙈)

socksandvests · 14/11/2022 22:05

All of it! I don't get it at all and only do it for my dcs because they LOVE Christmas and I always do it with a smile BUT...

Every year I get less and less out of the loft, with the end goal being that once my dcs move out I will never decorate for Christmas again.

It's a load of old pointless tat for one day of eating too much. What is the actual point of tinsel, big plastic bows on your door thingys and flashing lights? What has it got to do with Christmas? Unless you believe in Jesus I can't see why you even celebrate it. I think it's complete nonsense.

Seeing all the shops getting Christmas stuff out earlier and earlier each year just stresses me out by reminding me of all the things I haven't panic bought yet!
I hate ALL decorations now.
Christmas has lost all meaning it's just one big commercial con!

I think I have officially reached optimum Grinch level 10 (maybe it's my age), I need to hibernate for all of December.

Unfortunately, as I live with other less grinchy people and will be receiving un-grinchy visitors, come December I shall be decking my halls with plenty of warm white lights, a sprinkling of baubles and an obligatory angel - not a blue flashing light in sight ✔️ and bunging some poor turkey into my oven.

Bring it on, let's get it over with for another year, siiigghhh 🎄

wolfmom · 14/11/2022 22:06

Flashing lights make me physically ill (I have a form of photo sensitive epilepsy) other than that I don't really dislike any Christmas decorations. Mind you I have a tree that looks like an ornament factory threw up on it and then Marilyn Manson attacked it (my prized ornaments are Baphoboo, Pawzuph and Malpuss, hoping to add Beelzebat this year)

stuntbubbles · 14/11/2022 22:07

I’ve realised I love very old, shabby tinsel where most of it has fallen off and the shine has tarnished a bit. But I HATE new, shiny, overly fat tinsel like a glittery plump willy; even worse if it has little glittery holly sprigs in it.

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 14/11/2022 22:07

I detest christmas trees decorated in non Christmassy colours like turquoise and pink. Hate themes even more. And the worst is perfect matchy matchy trees with those enormous bows, oversized baubles or feathers.

Also do not like projectors, blue lights, flashing lights, inflatables, giant door bows, gonks, elf on the shelf, christmas soft cushions and throws, selfridges carrier bags under the tree or non green trees.

csiga · 14/11/2022 22:07

Any form of bows that aren't on actual presents. Always hated tree bows and now those horrendous front door bows.

Don't love inflatable anything. And strongly prefer soft white to blue white for me, but have seen it look nice elsewhere. However I am partial to a tacky multi coloured fairy light as it's what we had when I was a kid. See also tinsel and mismatching baubles made by kids.

Fucking elves on shelves - thank god I didn't start that nonsense.

Xmas eve boxes. Entire families in matching pjs. Bah humbug to the lot of them!

Twawmyarse · 14/11/2022 22:07

And I'm not a huge fan of the ironic 'I'm so wacky I have tree ornaments of pizza slices and David Bowie' vibe.

Oh I hate this too. The local Paperchase was full of this shite - like wtf has a hotdog, a cactus and a Frida khalo bauble got to do with Christmas?
There was an hilarious “Prince” one last year that looked more like Little Richard!

CopOut27 · 14/11/2022 22:09

SilentNike · 14/11/2022 21:54

It’s a shame that no one has yet designed a nutcracker decoration that doesn’t look like it’s been possessed by satan in a Christmas horror film and is going to hide under your bed and chomp you when you try to get out, because I love the ballet.

I haven’t even got any of the creepy fuckers in the house and I’m scared reading this as think they’d do exactly that!

I'm with you but this year (having finally wrestled the other downstairs room of eldest DD -now at Uni) I am having real in the living room and a small fakey in the study (not posh honestly just work from home in a 4 bed 70's semi with a dodgy extension) - I like having a tree in each window but can't afford 2 real ones!

OnABreeze · 14/11/2022 22:10

mangomelba · 14/11/2022 21:43

Any kind of Santa sleigh decoration is fine before Boxing Day, but anytime after that it seems a bit obsolete. Lights and trees seem fine until 12th night but anything Christmas Eve themed is better switched off after then, in my opinion.

How odd!

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 14/11/2022 22:09

I love that!

My mum still tops her tree with an angel (sorry) made by my sister from a small doll and some paper doilies - my sister is 56!

ghostyslovesheets · 14/11/2022 22:11

I should add my sister made it when she was 3 - not recently!
