What Christmas decor do you hate?

Following on from a thread about interior design hates, I thought I'd do a festive version.
I'll start

I do not like:

Pop up trees

Blue lights - flashing or not

Inflatables

Rope light figures

Fibre optics

Projectors on houses.

What are yours?

Traditionel Swedish jultomte are creepier than your British gonks. Yours at least have limbs.

These are brilliant. I will happily allow these in my utopia, where elves and angels fear to tread!

mynameischloe · 14/11/2022 21:26

ghostyslovesheets · 14/11/2022 21:08

I love my mates I really do - I only have friends on FB but by God - the moment Elf on the fucking shelf seasons hits I want to strangle them with fairy lights!

I'd say that elf is my most hated thing about this season

Agreed.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/11/2022 21:26

I have an angel in my Nativity - but I also have a crapper - does this cancel it out?

Cattenberg · 14/11/2022 21:26

Some of these aren’t to my taste, but I don’t hate any of them. I love tinsel and Christmas angels!

I once saw a small plastic Christmas tree in Woolworths. If anyone strayed too close to it, the tree suddenly opened its concealed eyes and mouth and sang a Christmas song loudly, startling the life out of them. I loved the randomness of it - it made me laugh.

Tinymushroom · 14/11/2022 21:27

I do not like:

Blue lights
Icy white lights
Nutcrackers with sinister toothy mouths
Gonks
Everything in a pastel colour ‘theme’
Christmas trees that aren’t green

I do like:

80s trees with lametta and tinsel, and glass baubles, and proper colourful lights
Stuff the kids have made
Warm white lights, or coloured lights
Knitted stockings
Real trees but also nice artificial ones

Floydthebarber · 14/11/2022 21:28

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 14/11/2022 21:15

Tinsel. I hate the smell and the feel of it.

Those gonk things. I don't get them. Where have they come from?

I love the smell of tinsel. It reminds me of the excitement of getting the tree down when I was little.

I am after some lametta this year and stalking ebay for proper vintage stuff.

TwinsAndTiramisu · 14/11/2022 21:28

The epitome of shite plastic tat, that is Elf on The Shelf.

Get in the bin.

Also, blue or cool white lights, which just look stark, cold, and when flashing are like a small police car has taken residence in the living room.

Scandi chic. Grinch trees, or other character trees, particularly those with massive elf legs jutting out.

Artificial white/black/pink trees. In these colours they look like oversized bottle brushes.

Inflatable things. Fine in a car dealership forecourt. Not in your garden, or worse still, we have one in the village who has an 8ft snowman placed a further 8ft up on his flatroof garage, so it's probably visible from France. Why??

MistyGreenAndBlue · 14/11/2022 21:24

Now see, I love me some pretty angels 👼

They're not pretty. They're smug, sanctimonious, evil, plotting bastards!

ChiefAdjusterOfRubensShorts · 14/11/2022 21:28

All of it….

Tinymushroom · 14/11/2022 21:28

themimi · 14/11/2022 21:18

My mother used to put swathes of lametta on the tree. Never see the stuff now. Same for blue tinsel. I feel a deep nostalgia for how crap everything looked in the 80s and 90s when I see the 'prepped for the gram' shots.

Lametta was available in Wilko last year! I got some but it got everywhere and I kept finding bits as late as August

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 14/11/2022 21:29

I'm not into the oh so tasteful austere Scandi vibe either.

And I'm not a huge fan of the ironic 'I'm so wacky I have tree ornaments of pizza slices and David Bowie' vibe.

Flashing lights can get in the bin.

SilentNike · 14/11/2022 21:29

Elves- like inviting the Christmas Stasi into your house

Anything where it looks like someone has gone out and bought a whole look all at once

Any decorations that are too “perfect” to allow children’s homemade contributions a place. I remember little DD telling me that she was pleased we’d put her pasta Christmas tree decoration on the tree because he friends weren’t allowed 😢

I am not very kitsch in my Christmas tastes, which I know isn’t very modern. I know some people enjoy ironically putting things up that they think are wonderfully hideous. I put the same things up but genuinely find them beautiful 😂

DontSpeakLatinInFrontOfTheBooks · 14/11/2022 21:29

Cool white Christmas lights
Christmas trees that are any colour but green
Flashing lights
Nutcrackers- creepy AF
Door bows- love a wreath on the front door but the bows look way too tacky IMO. I love some tackiness at Christmas, mainly things I associate with my 80s childhood but that’s where I draw the line.

slowquickstep · 14/11/2022 21:31

Those cheap tacky bows on front doors

JaneJeffer · 14/11/2022 21:32

It's impossible to find coloured lights without blue though.

FangsForTheMemory · 14/11/2022 21:33

All of it. It’s all tat. I bring home some wild holly, that’s it.

Tubbyinthehottub · 14/11/2022 21:33

The front door bows. I HATE them.

OoooohMatron · 14/11/2022 21:33

I love it all but I cannot stand a sparsely decorated tree. I love 'designer style' trees but I also love mis matched decorations, with kids home made creations.

ShaunaTheSheep · 14/11/2022 21:34

JaneJeffer · 14/11/2022 21:32

It's impossible to find coloured lights without blue though.

True.

MyCrumpetIsCold · 14/11/2022 21:34

All of it tbh, I love it when the tacky shite is over for another year.

CopOut27 · 14/11/2022 21:36

Many things mentioned, garden inflatables that remind me of the marshmallow man in Ghostbusters are the worst.

I don’t allow any non-Christmas/winter related decorations on the tree ie. no glitter unicorns, rainbow coloured crabs or cute giraffes etc.

EnglishMuffins · 14/11/2022 21:37

White Christmas trees
inflatable snowmen/Santa
flashing lights
tinsel
Fake snow spray
door bows

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 14/11/2022 21:38

Flashing blue lights, mainly because they give me migraines.

Stationsofthecross · 14/11/2022 21:39

Tinsel and coloured lights. Just odd.

CandyCaneLane0 · 14/11/2022 21:39

Red, blue or green lights
Those creepy standing santas
Angels
White trees
